How To Steer A Horse That Is Green | In this video, I am going to explain to you the basics of how to steer your horse. When we are teaching a young horse to turn we begin by steering the horse with the inside rein BUT we want to end up being able to turn a horse with the outside rein. Steering a horse on a circle is quite an advanced exercise for a young horse to do in balance and should be part of your dressage exercises. How to turn and steer your horse is a step-by-step process and it helps you to understand each step and then you have the ability to teach your horse if your horse won't turn. It really is a part of basic horse training and basic dressage training. It is something you should take the time to teach your horse.

Do you have trouble with your horse falling out. It is a really common problem and one that is easily fixed if you understand the basics.

I've had heaps of trouble as a new rider with my horses falling out/in. This video has helped a lot (I also realised that I've been holding my reins incorrectly with the line to the mouth from my thumbs, not my pinkie! So instead of squeezing on the reins I've been pulling.)

He is such a beautiful boy I had a brother of his here today. He is a very green horse so I am going to use him to show in real time how I train a green horse. He was a beautiful boy just like Spider 🥰

@@BasicHorseTraining That’s exciting! I am curious to see what he looks like and his personality😁 How is Spider doing? I got to thinking tonight, after all this time of watching your videos and getting to know you, I’ve never asked if Rebel and Spider are a particular breed of horse? Personally, I think they are two of the most aesthetically pleasing horses I’ve ever laid eyes on.🥰 You produce some lovely horses Josie!

When I was breaking in my gelding, he was very stubborn with any kind of turning. On the ground he was turning great but when he was ridden he wouldn't listen. Go and stop was good but he didn't want to turn directly or indirectly. What worked well for me was taking him in the bush for 5-10 minutes each time I rode him and weaving through the trees at random. When I'd bring him back into the arena problem solved.

Very relevant to my green horse, up to ride maybe 10. Very unbalanced & naturally tentative, but so willing & sweet. My going very moderately with her, little by little. She's so keen infact i have to be very careful to be clear & consistent & really try to avoid any confusion for her. It very much helps to see you realistically training your own horses. Very relatable & thus super helpful. Thankyou Josie 👏🏼👏🏼🐎🙏

Hi, love your videos! What do you mean by inside leg on? Thanks!
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining Жыл бұрын
You put your inside leg against your horses side and he should "bend" around it.

Thank you for this video! I started horseriding just over a month ago and i’m having trouble with steering. The horse i’m learning on is a little stubborn sometimes, and when i want to steer her she will shake her head, or turn it the opposite direction. It’s really stressing me out and idk how to deal with it. My trainer tells me i need to have more control, to have stronger hands, but I honestly have no idea how to do that. Any idea what I should do?

It is hard to give you help when I cant see what is actually happening so we can address the cause but if you have just started riding I would assume that your balance may need a little work. I don't think your hands need to be stronger as our strength as a rider comes from our core and balance. I would recommend that you ask your trainer for some lunge lessons so you don't have to worry about steering the horse in the beginning and you can concentrate on finding your own balance and stability. I have made a video on the things I did when finding my balance. Start them in walk to begin with and go from there :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGXWipKOiN52asU

Hi, thanks for the videos you're making for people like me to try and understand. I've been riding for years off and on, but never been a good rider. I'm a bit confused when to use which rein when you're either on a bend or just doing a half halt. In the other video, you said to use outside rein to do the "sponge motion" to check whether the horse is listening to you and before you transition up or down, etc. And then if you're riding circles, it should be the inside hand that does the "sponge" motion? Is that just to create a nice flexion and bend or is that just another version of half halt, but on a circle? I've been trying to find answers to those questions for ages 😢
