Hyperfocusing in a new hobby and losing interest in it and moving on to something new is a common and defining characteristic of ADHD. Those with ADHD have trouble with dopamine. A new and interesting hobby stimulates the release of dopamine but once the hobby becomes routine or mundane, the absence of dopamine causes the person to move on to something new and exciting that will then trigger the dopamine release. Thus, those with ADHD will frequently change hobbies and they will often circle back to old hobbies due to brain chemistry.

MessianicDaddy A great natural way to increase dopamine is to listen to music. Maybe that’s why I’m more productive when I have music in my headphones while I work.

I don't think I have ADHD, but I have been diagnosed with serious depression, and there are symptoms that overlap. I'm out of the worst of it, but I still have this problem where I can't even do a hobby as simple as playing video games, and I never had that problem before the depression started. I wonder if the dopamine thing you described applies to me...

One advice I received long time ago from my programming professors, specially for really long stuff that end up frustrating you because you don't know where to start: "divide and conquer". As a programmer you always deal with too much to read and too much to think at the same time, just cut that into pieces and deal with one piece at a time, first the core, and keep adding layers to the outside until you complete the task. That works not only for programming but for many other difficult things, like writing: find the core (a keyword, a phrase) of what you want to say and then add layers. I found myself having to write job applications in japanese (now that you mentioned it!), and since words in japanese involve wider concepts than those of english or spanish languages (last one my mother tongue), they work perfectly as units of meaning. Even if you add up layers to the outside, what people will focus is in that core word and from there they will obtain almost the whole meaning of what you want to say.

my problem is with choice, I have too many options and too many different things I want to do but I don't know where to start. sometimes I think a hobby is too easy and so it's rlly repetitive and doesn't excite or stimulate my brain. even difficult hobbies like learning a new language make me feel like I have no clear goal or reason to want to do something and it'll be of no use to me because other people won't benefit from my skill and it'll me just me and my hobby all alone with no one to appreciate it

This is exactly my life. A lifetime of doing this has now come to a head at the ripe old age of 27. I’m now unemployed, pretty much unemployable bc I have no honed skills or degree, living in a country with little to no opportunity, lost and really really spiraling 🌀. Seeing no light at the end of the tunnel. Thought I could have ADHD and that could explain it but I’m sure a therapist would just tell me I’ve been doing this to myself all this time. Super sad times 😞.

I thought the same thing as you, that therapists and psychiatrists would tell me its just all my fault. But after seeing a lot of therapists, I decided to see a psychiatrist bc therapists dont diagnose you, they just help manage. I saw a psych for an ADHD Eval as soon as I turned 18 and after my diagnosis, a lOOTTT of things i did made sense. If you have an inkling, go talk to someone to help you verify whether that inkling is true.

Sometimes i feel like having so many interests and having an aptitude for so many different things is a curse. Objectively it most likely is a hindrance in my case. I wish i was only good or interested in only three things and not everything (except sport. Im so lucky im not interested in following sports, though i do love playing them). It leaves me feeling burnt out trying to channel my energy (and time) in equal amounts to dozens of projects and hobbies.

Yeah, I've had this problem my entire life and only recently have I realized that it could be a symptom of adhd. Over the course of my life, I've taken up multiple hobbies from soccer to martial arts. Most recently I was trying to become a comic book artist and after 2 years of practice it just became a chore. Around the same time I've become completely obsessed with bodybuilding. Out of curiosity what is the longest and shortest period of time that you were able to stick to a hobby?

I have ADD and I’m medicated, but I’m still like this when it comes to my hobbies/interest. The medication has really helped with the duration that I am obsessed with something, but I still get obsessed. Some hobbies I drop but always pick up again.. like knitting, singing and learning Spanish. And the medication has helped me to study almost daily for 18 months! All my life I’ve struggled with sticking with it, so I am a little proud of myself. 🤗 I am currently into making doll or mini furniture and clothes and trying to learn how to use a sewing machine, before that it was tools, home improvements and painting. I also get super into a specific subject, like the holocaust, mafia, solitary confinement, the Oregon Trail, politics, mental disorders, slavery. Seriously, anything that I get interested in, I go full force. I buy tons of books and read articles and watch documentaries and talk about it all the time.. (im sure im very annoying.) I also do this with food. I am always obsessed with one thing and I will buy it in BULK and eat it all the time and then I will just stop and start eating some thing else. Now that I’m writing this I realize how crazy I sound.🙈😅 . Anyway, I can really relate. I love the “Jack of all trades, master of none” phrase. It’s a perfect way to describe it. Thanks for the video! Damn this is a novel! 😅 Sorry!

I feel like working on your strengths and perfecting them first would be easier. I think that's what I'm doing right now lol instead of taking on multiple things I'm weak at. I think I just confused myself 😳

yeah I have excellent thumbnail photos, just keep your title description and tags matching and you'll get found in the search engine like I do and get put on the side of other people's videos. let's face it I'm not the best cook in the world but that's all I get noticed. you have way more Talent than I do and you are definitely an up-and-comer!
