Hello Sarah, I never dreamed that underside couching was done like that. I'd always imagined that you need to bring the needle slightly through the fabric from the back and took it through the thread on top but just catching that thread on its under side. Nothing like trying to make life complicated for myself. Thank you for showing me how it's actually done.

Ahh! isn’t this what sewing machines use for a basic stitch too? never realised it was a long established hand stitch as well.

There's another interesting historical reason as to why this was used, since the gold thread medieval embroiderers were using was wrapped in 24 carat gold (or at least silver gilt) this was a way to have as much thread as possible on top, and also stopped the metal shredding

Greetings, is there any evidence of the division of labor in the professional workshops that produced the Opus Anglicanum pieces. I know that many of the spectacular pieces of Chinese court embroidery often the men and boys did the metal thread work while women and girls did the coloured silk work. I'm wondering if there was a similar division in Europe.

I'm not too sure but it looks like from some of the records that one person would work one whole piece. I'll go and have a look at the book again! Men were the merchants but the work seems to be done by all women...

Can you these embroidery stitch methods in cross stitch as well as for of the other needle work . And what are the difference in them , besides the look of it. I use to do a lot of different needle projects . And I'm trying to get back into it. I just need some refreshing course in the styles in threads. I 'm trying to move on from the crocheting world and sewing world as well. Any help would greatly appreciate . Thank you very much for your time. Sincerely Vida Lindner.

Yes you can do these stitches in cross stitch; either follow the holes or treat the cross stitch fabric like a normal fabric and use a sharp needle instead of a tapestry needle and ignore the holes...
