Great tip there Kirk - We used to use 'Plaster of Paris' and Hessian ... Lay the Hessian, pour the POP - it virtually self-levels - Goes rock-hard in Max 30 mins, letting you get on with the job in double-quick time 🤠

Fantastic video Kirk. I’ve seen a hundred lathe and plaster repairs from Kirk Giordano, but you’re the first to show one in England. Brilliant job and lovely gesture. I had an equally challenging upbringing and unfortunately my mum didn’t have anyone besides my nan to help, so lovely thing you’ve done. With regards to the van, it’s great when you feel the van pull. I kept having dpf issues with my 13 plate transit, on the end i had it mapped, its not 130bhp from 90 something, goes like a rocket in comparison to before, and is pretty fuel efficient

I used to live in a 1920s house with lath and plaster ceilings. It was rented. The living room was about 14.5 x 10.5 feet with a nice little cornice. One Saturday morning I was getting ready for work and there was a massive bang and the whole central area of the ceiling had come down. Me and the landlord tried to work out what happened and came to the conclusion that the heating pipes had dried out the laths and the plaster then detached and the whole lot just fell. It was too much to patch. I wanted to keep the cornice so the landlord paid me to take down the ceiling and board it. I cut around the edge with an angle grinder, took down the ceiling and laths which just left the cornice. When the boards were up the plasterer came and used bonding to bring the ceiling down a few mm of the cornice. He then skimmed the whole ceiling. It actually turned out great and once painted you would never have known any work was done. I tried to buy the house off him but he wouldn’t sell and ended up buying somewhere else. 😂 Thanks for the video, I will feel a lot happier if I have to do any repairs to lath & plaster.

The PVC mains cabling routed through notches in the joists is against 17th/18th Edition regulations. What a horrible bodge job so you would need to recess either side of the notches and get substantial metal cover plates to stop nails or screws penetrating the cables and called 'basic mechanical protection" under regs.

Well spotted. The ceiling had previously been patched up after the new joists. When I was cleaning out I noticed that about every 4th lath had been re fixed to the joists from below. I was happy that once i meshed it that it will be solid. If you ever wanted to do this without causing more damage below then you could lap the mesh up the inside of the joists and staple it before back plastering but I didn't think it necessary on this little area. Keen eye though mate 👌👍
