I'm working with some ponies who are renowned as bitey. I haven't had a problem with true "bites" in about six weeks now, and it's because my natural reaction was to do essentially what was shown here. They are still mouthy and curious, but the only part of me that they've bit recently has been the wrist of my glove, the part you pull to get them on. Otherwise they just feel around with their lips and that's fine by me.

I've tried tbis with my sisterz gelding hes fresh broken and a Brumby, he just bites harder and harder, so i ended up finding ky own way of doing it then tried it on my boy he doesnt bite as much now, and my mare also hates it so she dont either lok, just gotta try on the donkey, but i watch yiur other videos and it has helped so much!!!

0:48 Just saw this! My horse is blind and the main time i have a problem is when i go to halter her and she wants to bite and put the lead rope in her mouth and of course my hands get in the way trying to get the halter on. Have been doing what you recommend before seeing this video just not enough and the way you're recommending. Any other suggestions would be great but am definitely trying this technique.thx so much 🐴

If she’s blind how does she see to bite you? I guess she bites in your general direction. She must be slightly nervous about you being close to her. Yes try this method a bit of reverse psychology sometimes works! I would also spend time practicing approaching her and haltering her. Let’s say you walk up to her and halter her 5 times in a row right after each other. The first time she’ll try to bite you hard and by the fifth time she’ll barely move to open her mouth. Hope that helps!

@@lolololilililo I got a trainer out and it’s just the way he is. I just got him and his brother. His brother is perfectly normal, he is just very much a strong willed and dominant horse. My first week with him I just hung out in his pasture, letting him and his brother get to know me without pressure. Then moved into doing grooming and putting on a saddle to get him used to my tack and my methods (found out he was trained backwards so that didn’t help). He just wanted to do his own thing. He was fine when there was no pressure… the moment you added any pressure he got intense. Me being super new to horse ownership and only having casual experience, could not handle him. I told the previous owner my skill level and that I need a horse that’s easy to handle. Unfortunately he was selling them to run the country from charges against a minor. So… he just sold them quick to anyone who wanted them without any heads up. He is now in a home with a barrel racer who also teaches students and trains horses. He’s been doing so well with her and has been thriving with a job and experienced handler!!

I don't agree with this, for a biting horse or any correction it is more about surpirse or interruption of the action, which some have suggested a tap to their leg with your foot can interrupt without focusing them on the person, or just making a quick movement, this has worked with me for all kinds of horses from rank stallions to little minis.

It’s all a balancing act. If your horse is biting you then he could use a little bit of head shyness to keep away! Don’t overdo it and you’ll never run into issues. 👍🏼

I have a 7 year old stud that always tries to bite and reach for my hands and arms when i try to pet him or but his halter on, when i try this he keeps doing and and wanting to bite even more, not in a very aggressive manner but in a playful manner like he is bored and wants attention

Interesting situation. First of all why do you own a 7 year old stud? Do you have a breeding program in place with him? Owning a stud is much more complicated than owning a gelding. Studs begin to display aggressive behavior around 6 years of age. They need a lot of attention and training to keep them safe and happy. This technique may help but just be very careful around him and try to do things that keep him occupied and happy throughput the day so that he has ways to let out his energy. Hope it goes well with him and he stops biting soon!

My goal is to minimize the biting and not have him in my personal space when leading him on the halter. Hello! Does this method work with the colts? I have seen many videos, and every single one of them makes me slightly sick to my stomach with how hard they are hitting the babies. If this isn't a good method for colts, is there any that isn't me smacking a baby horse in the face? Also, those this show any issues with putting bits in? Hi! Very good Question! Yes this will work with any age horse and is much better than slapping them! No, your horse shouldn't later be scared of the bit because that is different and you haven't hurt him.

Sounds like her has zero respect for your personal space! Is it possible to try the method in this video with him? If not a stiff palm to his nose if he tries to bite you can also help but you have to be careful it doesn’t turn into a fight as some horses just try to bite harder after you tap them away.

I rode the same horse before this one and now my trainer starts to introduce me the rest of the horses in the barn, the non beginner friendly ones. This time I got another one who also bites, but I tried you method on the neck instead of pat and she never tried to bite me. She turned towards me, but did nothing. And at the end of the lesson she did nothing at all, while I did the grooming. Thank you for your useful videos! :)

Problem with this is you'll cause the horse to be head shy and try to move away even when you're doing other things like checking their teeth for example. I suppose this method might work better only when used as a reaction to the biting so they can associate it. Otherwise I don't think this is a great idea.

Hi Tai, yes I can see your point, however I would much rather have a headshy horse than a horse that has a dangerous biting problem. I've never had a headshy horse after using this technique because its not a daily experience its a one off fix. As soon as the horse stops biting or nipping I resume normal interactions with the horse. There is a balance to be found between biting(too much attraction) and headshyness (too little attraction) so I agree with you in that sense. Thanks for your comment 👍🏼

Hi there, Yes I definitely wanted to demonstrate with a horse that had this problem but somehow I couldn’t find one! You said your stallion moved his head up and away from you… that’s exactly the results you want! He can’t bite you if he moves his head away from you! The goal is not to rub his nose the goal is to discourage him from bringing his head close to you. If you only had to rub him once on the nose then that’s great! Just start again if he brings his nose back.

I rescued him 15 months ago hes 3 years old.He had been beaten around the head and he could not be touched - it took a month to head collar him.All good ever since and he never went to bite me until 6 months ago.He thinks hes playing nip nip always playful and comes at me very mouthy.I say NO and tap his nose - his head goes up and if im not quick his head could injure me. I feed apples to a horse who lives by me on a daily walk but he has bit me twice the first time was my finger and he locked on it while screaming he finally let go and then he bit my arm nipped it hard if I didn’t have a sweatshirt he would have taken a chunk of my arm he broke the skin both times idk why he does this I’m very nice petting him giving apples and carrots?

Horses need a leader and if they don’t feel like you are their leader they become the leader or dominant one for their own survival. So this horse is asserting its dominance over you and therefore it’s rights to the food that is there by biting you (horse language for get lost). He is the leader in your two member herd. So in his mind he’s just doing horse things and has no idea of the hurt he is causing you. For now I would recommend throwing the food into his pen rather than trying to hand it to him. He doesn’t care how nice you are to him unfortunately he only understands horse language. In order to stop this behavior you’d have to work with him and make him move his feet. It’s complicated but if you have patience he may get better slowly just be careful!
