So true. I almost went to the ER when I had my first panic attack. I went to the doctor a few days later and she told me it was a panic attack and it would not kill me. The next time I had one, I could hear her voice in my head telling me that and it helped a lot. One day, in the middle of a panic attack, my son came in and needed me. I attended to his needs and noticed that the panic attack had stopped for those few minutes. This is when I realized that if I could focus 100% on something else, it would help me get through the panic attack. One of the tools I use now is to watch videos, clean house, or work on one of my hobbies. It doesn't always work, but it often does. One of the toughest things is when you don't know why you are having a panic attack.

The #1 reason standard anxiety cures not work is because they don't train a person to end the fear of fear. Instead they teach you to ‘cope’ with all the problem and to control the anxiety in the hope that it'll finally disappear.

I just wanted to say that this advice is very clear and concise and 100% what a therapist/professional would advise you. I had a course of CBT to overcome my crippling anxiety, many times not making it through the session without excusing myself and running out of the room! But I persevered and eventually got so much out of it. Now when I feel panic coming on, I completely relax my body and my arms. Panic makes you tense up - but just relax your whole body and BREATHE - don't forget to breathe deeply. And say to yourself I am not in danger - my body is in fight or flight mode and is protecting me. This will pass. It has before and it will again. Even though it's the scariest feeling in the world I have been through this before and I didn't DIE. Thank you for this video and I really hope it helps others out there. X

I watched this while having a panic attack just now and every symptom he listed was exactly how I was feeling. I take hydroxyzine to help curb the attacks but I used the breathing/counting technique, minus the paper bag while glistening to the rest of the video and by the end of it I actually started coming out of it. Thanks for the help!

In the 70's I suffered from panic attacks ending up in ER numerous times with heart palpitations & very rapid heart beat to the point of passing out. I felt I was losing my mind. My family practitioner put me on Inderal but was concerned about long term use due to risk of congestive heart failure. He told me about the breathing techniques you present in this video. I practiced until I was able to gain control over attacks and to the point I was able to discontinue the medication.

That's why I'm here now. I have floating anxiety, a lot of time there isn't even a trigger. Reading about it, even though I already know it all, and reading comments helps a lot. I hate these feelings. They are much less frequent than they used to be, but the intensity is the same..

To the person who created this video and to the person that uploaded it thank you, I woke up this morning at six am, searched how to stop a panic attack and found this video. It worked in probably four minutes or so, and I went from thinking I was having a heart attack to knowing it was just a panic attack even though I know a heart attack at my age group is impossible and not the case of your heart beating faster but actually stopping. Thanks for helping me reclaim rationality! I can rest easy.

Sometimes the embarrassment felt like the worst part. I didn't want to tell anyone that I was suffering from panic attacks so I just shut myself in. Only my family and a handful of close friends new what I was going through. That just made it worse. Fortunately, no matter how mad your panic attacks are, you can beat them! Just hang in there. I share some of my experience and advice overcoming panic attacks on my channel. If you're going through something similar, maybe you'd like to check it out. Best of luck!

Although the suggestions offered here could certainly be of value in someone's recovery, an incredibly important bit of intel has been left out. That is that the symptoms listed in the video for a panic attack, especially if it is your first one, can actually signal an impending heart attack or stroke, especially if you are a male on the wrong side of 40, a woman over 50 or someone with certain health risk factors. This is not a situation where you want to play doctor and self-diagnose as the "patient" could wind up dead or disabled. I would suggest adding a disclaimer to this video.

I have had panic attacks since I was 7 and I still hate them. When I get them, my whole body starts shaking violently and I have no control over my body at all. I feel like everything is going wrong and I start crying and hyperventilating. The longest one lasted about 20 minutes. My mom tries her best to comfort me when I have them. It's just that I worry way too much and it's literally taking a big toll on me.

kay9x hi Kay, This is a very common Symptom you are NOT ALONE! Anxiety can cause all sorts of different physical systems (rapid heart beat, heart skipping beats, dizziness, sweating, hard to breathe, blurred vision) which your brain has/is mistaken as something wrong. When this happens, take a few deep breaths from your belly, holding the air in for 3 seconds then slowly exhale and tell yourself "I'm completely safe, these sensations are perfectly normal and I have nothing to fear"

My first Major panic attack was at work, and it was a kinda good day? For me stressing wise. Got told I was actually doing a good job., so I was happy about that. No major? Then later when I was taking the trash out after my break., coming back in I started to feel. Lightheaded? Out of breath.? But I brushed it off cause they needed me up front on dessert counter, As I was taking an order my vision blacked out! I was still standing and could hear, but I knew I had to get out off the section, told the customer, please forgive me but Could no longer take his order,- grabbed the closest to me, and felt my way to the bench. It got worse

People don't die from waterboarding either, and that's what a panic attack feels like to me. Saying "you won't die" is not very reassuring; mainly it's not knowing what to do, or having anyone around who can help, not wanting to make something out of nothing by calling an ambulance etc. So it's important to differentiate a normal anxiety-related panic attack from a post-tramatic panic attack, which can't be alleviated just by techniques; in fact this will make it worse by false security.

I had my first panic attack when i was driving with my friends..... i was laughing and joking around and stuff all of a sudden, my vision went blue. i had shortness of breath and started to feel numb, when i breathe i felt like i cant force air into lungs and any one who talks to me extremely pissed me off.... after a while as i was taken to hospital.... i started crying like a baby... the docs diagnosed and told me i was having no physical issues and helped me calm down. i felt really embarrassed after i recovered 20 mins later. i am having another one right now as i am typing. this is why i am in this video.. it attacks moslty when i wake up from sleep or have my sleep disturbed.

I'm going through the time in my life where anxiety attacks are becoming a usual routine, it sucks! I watched this video and everything on here were things I knew about already, but it doesn't hurt to get a reassurance on those exercises. I had a question though, has anyone heard of losing their vision or even being in a "high-like" state? I'm new to this and that is what mostly triggers my attacks. I wonder if that is from the attacks and that is what it is doing to my body.

These work some times, I was stuck in a tunnel and could smell and see the smoke for the car wreck. I hit the highest level possible it would come in waves then I would breath and put on some easy music, I tried every technique I know. this went on for 45 minutes. I am done I will never drive thru a tunnel again. I will drive a extra 20 minutes to work just to avoid the tunnel.

You should try getting them when you're in a safe place or with a safe person, then you'll get used to it. But if you try to avoid it then it'll become self-inducing through fear, when you're too scared to focus. I got so used to dealing with it, that even when my car spun out of control in a blizzard, then I was able to gun the engine and pull out of the spin, when most people would have panicked. The thing to remember is everyone panics, it's just learning how to react.

I'm the same! I've only just started having them, I'm 16. It's a horrible experience, but I went to the hospital and they said it cannot kill you, harm you, etc. Even though you feel like you're going to die, you wont. I found it easier to cope with when I did something I did when I was a kid, that made me feel happy and calm and forget reality for a little while. It's horrible, but just gotta ride it out; it cant hurt you.

Exactly, it's like you feel like you have to do something, but don't know what, and can't think. This is because it's caused in the part of the brain that compares sensory information with memory, which deals with habits for routine things, vs. "stop and figure it out" for something new. With panic disorder, this causes you to stop when you want to do something, and so it's like there's a lion looking for you, i.e. you're scared stiff since he might find you, but if you move then he will.

This technique is pants. There often isnt an underlying issue so a therapist cant help. The answer is to stop being afraid of what your body is doing but explore the sensations & stop fearing the sensations & biological proccess. A panic attack is essentially an initial rush of adrenaline & an alert from the body. What happens next is a fear of what the body is doing makes that double, Then a hooror at it doubling makes it quadruple. That has nothing to do with your childhood or anything else

"There often isnt an underlying issue so a therapist cant help." That's actually not true. Do some people have anxiety attacks for no reason, due to a neurological glitch or outside factors such as caffeine? Absolutely. But statistically they are in the vast, vast minority. Whether it's realized or not in the overwhelming majority of cases there *is* a psychological reason, which a good therapist can help pinpoint.

@TheBrradsullivan Its amazing what stress can do to the body, it will tear you down and spit you out. It will show you who is the boss and bring you to your knees. If you have been checked out by the doctors and they see nothing physically wrong with you then shift your focus to mental/neurological issues. We all have stress and its always at the forefront of our thought......even when we sleep. How are you sleeping anyway. Do you try and get atleast 7 hours of solid, uninterrupted sleep?

There's this one day i was watching the documentary on tsunami that happened in Japan. Then out of nowhere, my heart started to pump so fast and my vision started to get blurry. I feel so dizzy that I fell off from the couch and crunched down on the floor. I was so confused about what was going on so i cried. My parents were upstairs in their room but i can't find the strength to call them. My cat (who always ignore me all the time) came over to me to calm me down. It only last like a minute or two but it was scary. I can't imagine those who frequently have them. I feel ya bruh *virtual hugs*

Keep practicing, you want to treat the problem, not avoid it- but in a safe manner. Everyone has anxiety, you'd be dead if you didn't. I used to be too afraid to drive, even, but then I was driving 120mph in a race-car once I got used to it. It's like swimming, i.e. you learn to manage things going on. But if you can't, don't deny it-- that's the main problem I had, i.e. trying to push myself things when I knew it was more than just anxiety, and it became traumatic.

The first time ive ever had a panic attack I happened to be in cvs picking up my medicine. Because the day before that I was pushed over a grill. I went to the doctor that night and was prescribed medicine. I was actually on my way to vacation to Pennsylvania. And all of a sudden I felt really bad. I moved my sister out of her chair and sat down and the next thing you know I being woke up by my grandma freaking out. I was rushed to the hospital and thought I was dieing I was short of breath.

people think of things differently, sometimes the Panic Attack thinks that it's the boss of you and that you have to do something or else something bad will happen. But eventually, you'll realize that Anxiety and fear is ONLY in the mind. Negative thoughts can make you feel like you're sick or going to die, but really you just have to observe what the Anxiety is thnking when it hits you. For example: You don't focus on Homework or on your job because of Anxiety, you might think that there has to be Drama, and that it'll never stop. But just remember that sometimes it'll try to take over you and make you feel bad, if you feel stressed. Try sleeping, throw cold water in your face, go on a run, count from 100 to 7 backwards, tighten all of your muscles for five seconds and then relax your muscles, think that the Anxiety went to someone else, or it's in a pickle jar where it can't get out, if none of these work....just try to think that it's a game, and that you can break through it.

@TheBrradsullivan Just remember to shift your thoughts of fear to thoughts of controlled breathing as the video describes. Your dizziness is a result of heart palpitations and out of control breathing along with blood being re-routed in your extremities. Tell me, do you suffer from hot flashes?

@PeterTheEvilBastard deep breaths ARE less breathing. Instead of breathing fast, you take one deep breath hence less breathing. Its worked for me when i get the symptoms. But i guess everyone finds their own way.

I get panic attacks when I'm alone and not doing anything. It happens when I sleep. It happened last night during a dream. I get the "losing touch with reality" thing now. It used to be EXTREME stomach pain, but I convinced myself it isn't real and don't feel that anymore.

@Jensagirl ...thats just it, i dont ever over breath, only sometimes i get a racing heart. ill just be going about my day and my hands/ face will turn yellow, ill get a million degrees like im in an oven or someone is poking me with a hot poker, then i get wholy body butterflies, depersonalization, tunnel vision, electric jolts, tight chest, body numbness...and then i faint. physical activity (even walking) will bring this on, ive been tested to death they cant figure out whats causing it.

I have never had panic attacks before, but a year ago I started to get anxious and get panic attacks especially when i am in an airplane. I start to scream and ask the flight attendant to allow me to get off the plane. I feel so bad and embarrassed, but I can not control it. I tried once to stay awake for 24 hours before my flight and I took a sleeping pill one hour before the plane took off in order to sleep all flight long, but it didn't work. Some people told me to take anti-anxiety drugs an hour before the flight, but I am afraid that it won't help because the sleeping pills that I take do not help. I REALLY NEED HELP. I want to go to a therapist and would like to ask if anyone went to a therapist and was cured from general anxiety disorder and panic attacks.
