Emotional triggers like stress, sadness, anxiety and worrying about things can also influence binge eating. Basically it's lack of emotional balance and not really hunger that is making you behave in that way.

Look up intuitive eating, actually get treatment for binge eating disorder if that's you. Binging actually has roots in restriction. Not keeping specific foods in my house caused me to binge even more. It wasn't until I have myself unconditional permission to eat and stopped being obsessed with weight loss my preoccupation with food changed and now I have a secure relationship with it. I can keep all of those foods in my house, even chocolate and I don't 'lose control' around it because I don't view it as scarce.

Discipline is the ultimate form of SELF LOVE. You love yourself TOO MUCH to ALLOW yourself to eat that cupcake and gain those extra pounds. You LOVE yourself TOO MUCH to just sit on the couch all day and not go to the gym and feel better - Quote by Will Smith. Self-love builds character and confidence. I hope this serves as motivation for some to realize WHY it's worth making a change. 🌟🍀

This quote helped me a lot, when you see discipline as self love you start to notice how much you bullied yourself in the past and naturally I thing we are designed to question authority or discipline because we associate it as hard work and willpower but now that I see it as love I am so intune with my body
@marthawoodworth6907
@marthawoodworth6907 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for food addicts "discipline" does not work. Surrender to the fact that you have the addiction is what works. Then you can get back to loving yourself, without self-recrimination and the question of "Why can't I discipline myself like other people?" Because you are not like other people. You are a food-aholic and eating certain foods in certain ways triggers you to keep over-eating.

Meditation has made me a very peaceful, centered, grounded person. I used to be stressed out and worried constantly. Now my life feels like velvet. Meditation, meditation, meditation. That's my personal "cure" for stress. Of course, there is always some stress some of the time. And some people are beset by clinical depression and chronic anxiety. But I still say even those people can benefit from daily meditation.

Yes, and food is like a drug for some people - in fact, everyone on occasion. Its a mood-alterer. Have you ever eaten something and felt kind of tired or spacey afterward, or highly energized? That's what food can do: make you feel certain ways. Best to eat good food. It makes you feel good.

Marisa, it's quite true. My sponsor used to say "Isolation is the name of the game." However, as a recovering compulsive overeater, I can honestly say that "isolation" is helping me. Also working out to some of the great exercise vids here on YT.

This is very good. Thank you, Marisa! I have taken and kept off a lot of weight. Here's my "recipe": 1.)O.A. for wisdom, sharing and spiritual support 2.)No white sugar, brown sugar or corn syrup 3.)Make a list of and get rid of all "trigger" foods from your kitchen Also make a list of all the good, nutritious foods you actually love. That's your new food plan. 4.) No animal flesh, except for fish 5.) No gluten 6.) No wheat (grains are like grain alcohol...they make you high and addict you, just like booze and sugar). 7.) Eat on a salad plate for two months (changes you psychologically; you won't be able to eat on a large plate ever again}. And pile it on that small plate for one serving. Don't start out eating too little. 8.) Wait for at least four hours between eating for good digestion which is really what weight loss is all about 9.) Snacks are OK if they are nutritious and low-cal - a nice coffee or cup of tea mid-day, or a cup of broth, tomato juice, etc. 10.) Don't stop eating "sweets" - Stevia, fruit, maple syrup, coconut sugar 11.) Treat yourself to delicious, nutritious meals. 12.) Go slow. Don't do it to "lose weight fast." Do it as an "insurance policy" for your life. And slow your chewing down. Note: Marisa is right. Early humans ate to survive. What you eat all the time you will come to love. Get habituated to good food. If you do these things you can eat anything else, go to buffets, whatever you like...but you have to train yourself to love food that is good for you,, that you digest well, so you won't need to keep eating. P.S. Certain chips, salsa and guacamole are fine for you...but they can't have sugar, and the chips must have a lot of fibre for good digestion.(Bean chips are perfect...and delicious). Fat is actually good for you...it sates hunger; but not a lot of grains. Just eat nutritiously, treat yourself well.

@marthawoodworth6907 4 жыл бұрын
@@tiffanyms2881 Just take it one day, one ingedient at a time. I feel no restrictions whatsoever. I eat scrumptious meals, but I have learned that certain foods and substances trigger compulsive overeating. This comes from years in recovery from food addiction and hearing from hundreds of people who have this problem, both as a member and sponsor of a food addiction recovery group. But everybody has to do it for themselves. I just wanted to show, as you said, what works for me. Now I have no cravings at all and have lost a lot of weight and kept it off. But every person has different needs where food is concerned. As I said at the end of my message: "Just eat nutritiously and treat yourself well."

@marthawoodworth6907 4 жыл бұрын
@@tiffanyms2881 Oh, Tiffany. That's very sweet to say, and thank you for your honesty, but I must assure you that it has taken me a long time to get here. I just do want to pass on wisdom, not make anyone envious, because it hasn't been an easy road for me, either. But most of all it's important for me to say that no one with an eating disorder or any kind of addiction should beat up on themselves for not having the "strength," "discipline" or "courage" to heal from something that, basically, we have no control over. I think the most important things I did to get better (and that's all I've done; get better...I'm still a food addict and could be back to the beginning in seconds if I started eating certain foods and, mostly, sugar again) is to surrender to the fact that I have a condition called compulsive eating, and go to a twelve-step recovery group that gave me all the wisdom I utilize to this day. It's not for everybody, and I didn't always like it, because it required me to take a good look at my thinking and my character but it really, really helped me. Once again, be good to yourself. and love and forgive yourself unconditionally. The one thing you don't need to do is to be hard on yourself. It doesn't help, in fact, it just adds to the dysfunction and the hurt. Hugs! www.BestPsychicForMe.com

*A little tip when eating breakfast/lunch/dinner is to first drink some water, and wait. If you are truly hungry- eat a small portion of it, drink some water again and wait a little- if you’re still hungry- have a bit more of it and repeat, generally you aren’t hungry but just craving something* Also keep a diary! Some as simple as Date: Goal of the day: Did you meet your goal?: Breakfast: Lunch: Dinner: Exercise: How was your day?: How are you going to make it better tomorrow?: though it isn't for everyone.

I can only speak for myself but the more I have , the less I want to eat. If I had oatmeal, yogurt, toasts, eggs I don’t finish everything because I feel abundant . I think “ I have too much already. I don’t need to eat everything at once”. I feel like it’s the scarcity mindset that makes me overeat sometimes . (I don’t have a eating disorder so it might be different)
@cloaksandghosts

I can relate to this, scarcity mindset leading to overeat. I've often noticed when there's a stock of junk food in my home I'm not tempted to go and have it, as opposed to when I have just one or two packets. It's quite opposite of the idea of not keeping unhealthy food at your house if you're trying to avoid it, but there it is

World Wanderer it also depends on if you have a balanced diet already. If you eat very healthy stuff but have a lot of unhealthy stuff at home you won’t be tempted much because you have no room for it in your belly. But if unhealthy stuff is all you have, that’s all you gonna eat

Marisa I love and respect your work. HOWEVER, to advise ppl to hide the food only pushes the deprivation button and if we happen to be around it it feels like death if we do not consume and if we do, brings on shame which is a vicious cycle. I am speaking from experience. Instead of controlling an external factor; ppl have to look within.
@Screenplaywriter
@Screenplaywriter 4 жыл бұрын
She isn't saying to hide it from others, but to consciously hide it from your immediate subconscious. When your subconcious sees it, it triggers desire so put healthier foods in sight as a conscious choice. By choosing to put it out of sight, you are not creating the unneccessary trigger. No trigger. No deprivation. I am going to remove the chocolates from my table now...and replace it with apples!
@susiellis
@susiellis 4 жыл бұрын
It's the out of sight, out of mind mentality. She just explained how we are wired to see food and eat it right then without thinking since our ancestors had to eat whatever was put in front of them any chance they got. So she's saying to put the less healthy foods out of sight to help you make better food choices that are directly in your line of sight.

As a person who used to to be morbidly obese (I have lost 120lb) and binge eater I can art e st that putting something out of sight does not work. We are not stupid we know where we put that stuff and can easily go back to it. Although sight and smell can trigger cravings I think most binge eating is linked to emotional issues. And I have to say although there is probably something in what she says all this talk of primitive man and evolution etc has no scientific basis. It's basically speculation based on what we think life was like then.

My disordered relation to food needed me getting older and my body calling a halt. It let me know it would not tolerate any more bingeing. I work out regularly, so I'm in good shape. But I can no longer overdo eating as I could when young.

Yes, it does, but I was a compulsive overeater from childhood.I remember being suicidal at age thirteen because I couldn't stop eating a certain ice cream. And it was a secret. I now know I wasn't fat, I was simply sensitive and addicted to sugar.

I lived in a semi primitive village for a few years. We all binged. None of us was even slightly overweight. Because we walked miles and worked our butts off from dawn till sleep time. Food didn't magically land upon us from every corner like urban places. It was hard to find the food, hard to cook it (starting from chopping wood for fire and fetching water to wash and prepare the vegs, etc.) and hard to do all the cleaning work after we had eaten. Nothing was ready-made, prepacked, ready-cooked and ready-chewed. So yes you binge all you like but you've already overspent your calories.

Easy to say don't bring the binge foods into your house. I have binge eating disorder and if my brain is saying BINGE, BINGE, BINGE I can only hold off for so long before getting into my car and going to the store to get my binge. I have held off for several days, but for all of those days that I don't binge, I can't stop thinking about what I want to binge on. It's like I keep having intrusive thoughts about food. I just don't know what to do anymore. I feel so hopeless about my weight. I did lose 30 lbs with the ketogenic diet, but I can't seem to stick with it and I am fast gaining back all the weight I lost. I keep trying to get back on keto, but then I keep falling off again. ☹️

We are not supposed to "come out" this way, but I have to say it: Overeaters Anonymous helps tremendously. I got so much wisdom from the program and sharing with others who had a problem with bingeing. But you have to really want to stop. At a certain point, I did. Now I'm in complete remission from compulsive eating, but if I started eating sugar again (I gave it up years ago) I would be right back to craving and bingeing. There are a lot of ways to have sweet in your diet, also salty, crunchy, gooey and chewy...but healthy food that doesn't make you binge.

The thing that I do agree with was your suggesting that we should limit our variety when eating. That’s true b/c when I make myself a salad, I drag out everything in the frig: lettuce, spinach, onions, peppers, cheese, tomato, avocado, cucumber, crackers or toasted piece of sour dough bread or rye bread with coconut oil & add my dressing. I’m usually stuffed when I’m done & still I want a sweet treat after. I seem to love variety in my meal.

Very good and insightful. But one further and very important part of loosing a lot of weight is to eat the right type of food. When I strongly reduced all animal products ie reduced intake of fatty and lean meat, eggs, cream, cheese, and the like and stuck to whole plant foods, loosing weight was sooo easy. Even binge eating on fruits nuts, seeds, whole grain, beans, etc, potatoes etc or any other whole veggies never can make you fat. I know from experience. And its fantastic for health too. This is one of the few things in life that are not "too good to be true".

Yes! If you eat very healthy you can eat as much as you like and not get fat. This is what I have found, too. But: think about it. You think you are eating a lot, but probably still not as much as you used to eat that was unhealthy. You know -- snacking all the time stuff in between, especially fattening foods made with sugar.

@Quazi Roberts Using my own body as a laboratory, I am seeing that calories are not all the same. I can eat more calories on a LCHF vegan diet vs. a HCLF vegan diet. That is just the truth. I will say that my blood sugar does not spike higher when I mix lots of carbs with lots of fats, but it stays high longer. My fasting blood sugar is the lowest it's been in a long time the past couple of days since I've returned to a "controlled carb" (under 100 grams) high fat, higher protein, vegan diet. Super high carb vegan with no fat spikes my blood sugar BAD and I gain weight on 1000-1200 calories!

HI, Janet. Just saw your question here, and I hope that Marisa addresses it. Just thought I would say that "letting go" is one of the hardest things I do...when it's something I really, really wanted or it's something that is haunting me from the past. In both cases, I find meditation and prayer (whatever your faith is; I happen to be a Goddess worshiper) to be the most helpful for this issue. As for letting go of an unrequited or "impossible" love relationship, I find it's important to remember that you have the right to love - unconditionally. Sometimes just realizing this is all it takes to "let go." If you ever need to talk to someone about it further, or anything that's on your mind, you can find me at www.BestPsychicForMe.com.
