maybe try wearing gloves if they're purposefully lunging and drawing blood(i don't fully support the shaking method, as it could make them believe you are an unsteady perch), and see if there's anything in the house like certain sounds and things like that that might be irritating your bird and do your best to eliminate them. if they're still new, don't try to touch them yet. keep your hand in the cage but not near the budgie, and move slower than what you think is "slow enough". look out for signs of fear like "tssk" noises, flying around the cage when you put your hand in, neck stretching, tensed feathers, slightly open wings, and don't look directly at your budgie or they'll get scared and think you're a predator. try to look through the budgie's eyes. try to see what they're seeing and think what they're thinking. a common cause for biting in pets is fear and stress. put your hand on the far side of their cage for around ten minutes and talk gently every so often. only slowly move your hand closer when they aren't showing signs of fear. keep on moving your hand closer each time while making sure your budgie isn't stressed or scared while doing so. if he is, don't push him, move back a bit. once your budgie is comfortable enough with your hand, try feeding him some millet with your hand as far away as possible. it should look enough like seeds or pellets for him to realize that it's food, and hopefully he should start eating it. slowly move your hand further up the stalk over time, and when he's comfortable enough, try getting him to step up. try to get him to step onto your finger by putting one finger in between him and the millet stalk after giving him a little bit. make sure that it's barely within his reach, so that you can gently push his belly with your finger to encourage him to step up onto it. another method, if your bird is comfortable enough, is to hold millet in your hand, either hold it away from him or allow him to eat it, and very carefully push your finger beneath your budgie to get them to cave in (metaphorically) and step onto your finger. i absolutely do not recommend this is your bird is tense and unwilling to do this. is your budgie isn't allowing you to slide you finger beneath them easily, don't do this. you could also try to do both of those but with a stick instead of your finger, especially if he's still biting. research more about positive reinforcement and budgie body language, and keep a cool attitude when dealing with your budgie. do not get mad at them. i have a pretty successfully tamed budgie who i had to start from scratch with and a previously hand-tamed cockatiel who would leave me with bloody hands any time i went near him before i put on gloved and showed him i wasn't a threat. low pain tolerance is a bummer when you have an aggressive or scared bird. this is all based off of my personal experiences and decisions. by the way, i wouldn't absolutely recommend this, but getting a hand-tamed bird alongside your first bird can help significantly(emphasis on can). it especially did in my case. however, it can be tough having more than one bird, and if you get another budgie they might just try to bond with them instead of you. hand-tamed birds will not always be super friendly, especially when you first get them. i learned that the hard way, and there might be a chance that the birds will not get along and you could get stuck with two angry birds. spend as much time with your bird as you can, give them stimulation if you're ever away, and do not try to rush your bird. constantly be noticing things about your bird and always make sure to look up his behaviors to ensure his safety and your bond(i abuse this as a very paranoid and affection-hungry parent). sorry for this being really long. when it comes to birds, i can go on for. hours.

He also tugs at my skin. Butttt...every time I put my hand outside their cage, he gets very excited to see me and nibbles at my finger that is outside the cage. He’s use to my hand being inside the cage and loves it when I feed them their treats. OK, what I need to reinforce here is my bird IS NOT biting. She is preening me. She goes right for any scab I might have. As well as nibbling me on my nose and then going down to my lips..don't let your bird try to feed from your lips. They may bite down hard thinking that you are going to regurgitate food to them (also human saliva is not good for birds). If your bird cannot seem to stop biting at your skin tags, scabs..etc. then wear a long sleeve shirt and scarf.. and do not let them come close to your lips. .Yes they will eventually stop trying to help you (which is what they are doing) and just be happy that you are there. lol

you could be doing something wrong with your bird. try looking at the birdtricks channel and see what you can learn from some of their playlists, i found them very helpful and their methods work with smaller birds as well. also, if your bird is latching onto you, try wearing gardening gloves so that it doesnt hurt so much.
@isabellalaeger71094 жыл бұрын
@@ashlynnquesnell2129 I am planning on getting a budgie soon as well, I have heard that nesting boxes ( if it is a single bird) can make them territorial because it is simulating nesting and breeding. your bird might be less willing to interact with you if it thinks that it is time to breed. Mirrors can have the same effect because it could distort the birds reality, making it think that there is another bird there. nesting boxes are not necessary in my opinion unless you are trying to breed. Birds sleep perched if you were wondering about your bird sleeping and if a box is necessary for that.

I handfeed both my budgies with a slice of apple every day and my male budgie looks like he's getting curious and nibbles on my finger while I hold the apple. After a while, his biting hurts really bad, my thumb isn't bleeding yet, but it got red and has some small holes in it. My female budgie is often a little nervous when I offer her some apple bites, but she never bites my hand (yet). Now I'm scared, that she will imitate my male budgie's behavior and soon begins biting, too. I'll definitely try your trick in the next day and see, if it will work! (Note: I got my budgies almost two months ago, so they're still not completely hand tamed, but my male budgie started to step on my finger a few days ago. Then, well, the biting began. I'm not sure, if I'm doing something wrong. I'm always trying to be calm, I'm not chasing them around and I don't really disturb their sleep or playtime. His biting doesn't really seem aggressive, but more confused or curious. Their cage is placed in my bedroom on the table in front of my bed. Is this maybe wrong? Should I place them somewhere else? I would appreciate some advice!)

My budgie likes me. She eats food and perches on my hand and walks around. I'd guess she is pretty comfortable with me (even though its been barely two weeks since i got her and she was not hand tamed). But, while eating from my hand, she bites the tip of my fingers. I don't know if its aggressively, but she hasn't drawn blood (yet) but its probably playfully, since she does stand on my hand a lot. But its worse when she stands on my hand AND bites me, cuz then I can't pull my hand out of the cage without bringing her out with it. Honestly I sometimes think she wants to eat my finger with all the blood and bone and meat. A reason could be that her beak is rather sharp. I dont know how or where to get it trimmed and all, but i have had an idea on how to help my cause (maybe not eliminate the biting, but at least wear down her beak hopefully): I gave her a paper boxe first, and trust me what she did looked scary. The holes and tears were pretty big, i didn't actually think she could rip stuff like that badly. After that, i held up a short but thick piece of wood and she started biting it. She actually managed to slightly damage the edges of it, and the wood is what ill keep using for some time now. Also, when im feeding her, I'll pull my hand away if she bites. Obviously, this would be harder if she's on my hand, i guess ill just move it gently (i dont think shaking it is a good idea) and closer to the perch. This usually works. Since today is only the first day of my " No Biting The Hand That Feeds You" campaign, i dont know if it works yet, though i hope it does.

I do have a question I wondered about for a while now, I do have a male and female budgies, and a lovebird as well too, so my male budgie ( before I bring a lovebird to the group) was sometimes step up my female budgie, or put his foot on her tail, and she does sometimes dislike that kind of behavior, and other time she would be like its a loose cause and leave him to step on her. by the time I brought the lovebird to the flock, he starts doing that to him as well, the lovebird is much bigger than both two budgies so he sometimes goes above it. they're both 5 months old and my lovebird is still a chick, so I don't think it is mating behavior, and I don't think it is an aggressive one. I am really afraid sometimes when I am not looking he will be doing it again then something terrible will happen, does anyone knows what this is? I tried reading many possible articles about aggressive budgie's and mating behavior, and nothing has brought anything about that, that if we didn't put in mating behavior, but this kind of behavior needs at least 7 to 8 months budgies so its hormones will be revolved. sorry to bring this up but I just can't find anyone who can help me with this, does anyone know anything about that which could help?

I’m only telling you this because I had a budgie that died last year because of this! I don’t want anyone to go through that...

Hi!! I have problem here with my tamed budgie (female). She is biting me; few days ago I added swing in her cage; she spends lots of time on it and refuges to come out of cage. Is that the reason of biting? Should I remove swing?

I was wondering if you could tame a an old bird?
@BudgieWorld5 жыл бұрын
it is usually harder than a young one, but depending on a lot of factors, the bird's background, how much did the bird have interactions with owners before, did it go through any trauma and the list goes on.. but you can always try :)

I just got a female budgie about two or three weeks ago she is going through molting and I try my best pet her so she doesn’t scratch too too much but I don’t know if she’s playfully biting me or biting me because she doesn’t want me to touch her but she lets me do it sometimes like when she’s feeding and she lets me Feed her feed with my hands but when she bites me it doesn’t hurt it kind of tickles so I don’t know if I should stop or if she just playfully biting

My budgie used to playfully bite me which didn’t hurt but now she’s proper biting down on my hand/face/legs. I never really taught her how to stop so is there any other options or maybe she needs a friend or should i give her up for adoption?

I had a couple budgies who would chomp my finger when they were babies and would climb on my hand. I noticed they bit the twig I would hold out for them as well, and it seemed they were doing it to make sure the twig wasn't a snake. I figured the same with my finger. I wouldn't say anything, just hold very still. They stopped within a couple weeks.

Please Help!! I bought our first budgie 3 days ago from a pet store. The wings were clipped at the store. I don't have any history of the bird but was told it was young and probably female. She seems hand tame because she doesn't bite or fear our hands in the cage. I can tell she is sad and doesn't really want to be petted because she doesn't willingly come to me, stays in one place and hasn't eaten much. She also doesn't chirp unless I play budgie songs from my phone. I've taken the toys out the cage because she hasn't gone near them. What can I do to gain her trust and make her like me? She's not eating so treats are not working. I'm scared to leave her completely as I don't want her to feel worse or get untamed from lack of handling. She feels safe in her cage because she always goes back to it when I take her out. Any advise would be appreciated. Tx
@BudgieWorld4 жыл бұрын
I would definitely put the toys back in the cage, she needs some to time to get used to the new environment. when you first buy a budgie you need to give him or her some space to adapt to the new environment and she needs some time to start exploring her toys. just move slowly around her, and no sudden or unexpected movements from your part, give it some time and it will all get better with some time and patience. Good luck
@jodit25404 жыл бұрын
@@BudgieWorld thanks. I'll do that. In the past few hours she's started eating and moving around more. A drastic difference. I'm so please. How will I know when to start taking her out the cage.

Can you help me? I can’t tell what my budgie is doing but I’ve had him for about three months now and we’re still working on hand taming, he’s not really afraid of my hand anymore and now whenever I stick my hand in the cage he nibbles on it but then he does it a bit harder and it kinda hurts. My other budgie (I got them both at the same time and they live in a cage together) nibbles on my hand but gently. I’ve read online he’s either preening me, or still trying to get use to my hand. Is he trying to intentionally hurt me?
@BudgieWorld4 жыл бұрын
when your budgie is hurting you, yet not afraid of you it means he/she doesn't know that hurts you and needs to learn that this behavior is not good. you can follow the video to teach your bird not to bite and that this is a bad behavior

id love to get my budgie out its cage and socialize but shes not been nice, shes got out before and is still "wild" i think shes scared more than anything, i can put my hand in the cage and get her to perch on my hand however shes still trying to bite it doesnt hurt its easy to ignore im not mad at her i just let her bite while sweetly saying you shouldnt be doing that i dont think she understands. i been putting my hand in the cage for months still biting. i just wanna be friends..... thats how my budgie behaves at 6:44 exactly the same!

Oh I made a mastake I chase my parakeets to get them back in there cage can you tell us a safer way to do this? I have 2 parakeets and when I put my hand in the cage they fly everywhere but they let me pet them and they get on my hand for 5minutes thank you this is helpful. My parakeet dose the same butting but I’m doing the right thing I just let them.
@aisheeaindreebanerjee71953 жыл бұрын
Id say just move their cage closer to them, get them to go in themselves. Or you could bribe them with food (i tried it once but didnt work but its worth a try still) or let them figure out a way back to their cage on their own

I know this is an old thread but I’m at a loss. My budgie was so sweet and loving and on the last two weeks it will not let me put it back in the cage. He (thinking now may possibly be a she by it’s still only 7-8months old) Only bites when I try to get him back into his cage or off my head or shoulders. It was never and issue and almost over night he’s changed. I’m scared to take him out now because he bites be so incredibly hard but I don’t want to not let him out. What do I do to stop them biting if they aren’t already on my hand?

What about a budgie that preens you? And by that I mean nipping at skin tags or any bump on the skin. I understand that this is preening behavior but when it hurts what do you do? I don't want to scare him and I have said "no" and put him off but he keeps coming back. What do I do?
