It's nice to see the younger generation is able to talk openly about these things and actually get therapy. Our parents thought sending us to therapy reflected a failing on their part so many I grew up with never learned how to deal with things in a healthy manner. Thank you for mentioning guys can struggle with this, too. We can't be "scrawny" or "tubbos" so we get it on multiple fronts to look & act "like a man", especially as teenagers who don't know better. Thanks for all you do & you being you.

Thankyou 🙏I feel bad for the few generations above mine (some people in the newer generations too but more so in the older ones)… that putting on a brave face and “just suck it up” mentality is brutal and doesn’t work for a lot of people… now I see them still suffering and battling the same demons from their younger years but now later in life when their body is worn from years of mistreatment 😔 very sad

I think my best advice with binge eating or any eating disorder is to realize it takes a lot of time and work to overcome. It’s rarely a habit you can kick in a week. If you can work a little more on mindset shift and learning about nutrition (meal prepping if you can). One day you will have a sudden realization of how much better your relationship with food is and how far you’ve come. You may still have bad days but you’ll start having more good days than bad days and remember you can always “reset” the next day and eat normally like nothing happened. Also don’t deny yourself food you love or eat food you hate bc it’s “good for you.” If you want ice cream, have ice cream just get a smaller scoop and don’t get a giant potter of it so if you binge it isn’t as much.

@Emelia39
@Emelia39 Жыл бұрын
@@patricia__alves_ I don't think meal prepping is the absolute key to ending it, but it does help me bc I get triggered by thinking too much about food, so the less time I spend thinking about it (e.g. cooking, trying to figure out what I want to eat), the less likely I get stressed and fall into disordered patterns. That being said, there is no one size fits all with recovery and it's about finding something that works for you bc EDs are so diverse. Hope you're doing well!

the “clean plate club” mindset taught to kids causes so much inner conflict and shame. literally telling kids to ignore their bodies own cues… is so bad for development. tell the kids to eat when they’re full and don’t eat when they’re hungry but eat when they’re sad and hate how they look and constantly work to achieve a particular but ever changing standard of beauty.. no wonder so many people struggle with disordered eating and body dysmorphia. when i first started going to the gym, barely tween-age, i wanted to change my body to make other people like it more. now i go to the gym because it makes me happier, healthier, and stronger. thank you for being such a safe and honest space for us who have not always had a great relationship with food. ❤

In general, reducing my carb intake (significantly but not drastically) as a person who previously had an unbalanced, 90% carb diet has almost gotten rid of my emotional/binge eating. Getting my macros in balance and reducing the amount of breads and sweets in my diet has helped me relearn what hunger and fullness feel like and stop using food as a stress cope. I eat the same amount of calories as before, but in healthier portions and made up of more whole foods , fat, and protein… don’t have those emotional sugar crashes that make me want to eat an entire loaf of bread in one sitting anymore

Needed this. Been working really hard on losing weight, going to the gym and have been killing it. Went from 195lbs to around 155lbs. Yesterday I got the urge to eat ice cream and ate the whole container. In my mind it makes me feel like I’ve ruined all the hard work immediately. This was a really good one. I tend to emotionally eat, mostly when I'm stressed but also when I'm bored. You gave very good tips. Probably most people who have this problem are already aware of what triggers it and if you suddenly feel the urge to eat you aren't really hungry. But hearing all this from a third person really helps being more aware of the problem and try to put a stop to it.

This video really helped, it made me feel less alone with this problem. That's a real video, Patty. I've had issues with diet due to all the social reasons you listed and due to ADHD. Dopamine-seeking through food has been like a drug for me throughout life. The piece of advice that you mentioned about timing meals has worked best for me. Basically setting myself up to not ever feel hunger throughout the day. Therapy taught me not to treat myself like a piece of shit when i fail. Instead of spiraling down into an existential depression and ennui, I catch myself and begin the climb up again. But that's like a muscle you train - it's hard to do at first when you're used to tearing yourself down all the time. I'm still not perfect at it, but I'm working up all the time.
@peacemaster8117

ADHD has a statistically significant relationship with obesity, and like you said I think it's related to dopamine seeking. Not getting mad at yourself when you fail is certainly a crucial step towards building yourself up to succeed.

This video came just in time! I've decided to go on a diet, but I was worried about the triggers. It is actually one of the most genuine and helpful videos in my opinion... very realistic! The tips come from experience, and I love the encouraging tone in her voice. Now, I'm really curious about how she eats when going on a vacation, and it would be great if she spoke about that in another video. Keep up the good work!!
@theleanbeefpatty
@theleanbeefpatty Жыл бұрын
Thankyou manar! Actually about the vacation question: the majority of the time in my day to day life, I eat a moderate diet where I don’t track anything very strictly. Sort of like intuitive eating with a bit of guidelines. It’s quite rare and not for extended periods where I’ll strictly do anything (but if I want to reach a specific goal that requires me to do that, I’ll do that. Not being unrealistic in my expectations tho ofc). Then when I’m on vacation, ideally I’d be in one of my normal moderate/intuitive periods and just be like that on vacation, but if I’m not, I don’t like to ruin a potentially once in a life time experience with a diet. Personally, I think that has the capacity to be more negative overall. So I would go off my diet, keep in mind some general concepts like: if I eat these 5 very rich and filling foods I’m going to feel sick, but if I have two now and two tomorrow, i won’t feel sick…I’ll do something like that. And when I return from my vacation, if I want to return to my diet rather than my normal, homeostatic lifestyle, I’ll do that. Hopefully that made sense 🙏

A good mind healthy thing to do is to stay creative, like patty said, drawing, painting etc. Other things like sewing, maybe even decide to dedicate you’re time to that one thing you’ve been putting off, like laundry or doing some yard work. Deep cleaning your bathroom. Pretty much anything that needs your full attention. ( getting those things done will also make you feel better in general). Personally I love getting lost in drawing or sewing. I really struggle with staying consistent with nutrition so thank you for this video. It makes me feel less lonely seeing that other people can relate.

Great video, Patty! Loved the tips, it's great to learn with someone that has been through the same such as you, with such a broad understanding of the whole picture of this complex issue that affects so many people. What works best with me is to always eat as soon as I get hungry, otherwise the intense cravings for sweets will kick in. Oh, and always carry with me balanced snacks, especially for night shift.

I've struggled with binge eating my whole life, and it's definitely a constant battle. First off, thank you Patty for the way you addressed the subject gently, it's one I'm sensitive about. Because as I'm sure you understand having faced your own dysfunctional relationship with food, shame is often used and rarely helpful. I knew I could trust you to keep it kind. I'll add a few things to the list of coping skills that have helped me. Dancing around my apartment singing along to songs I love, making a hot cup of tea, spending time with people who make me laugh even if its just online, and repeating kind mantras to myself. I appreciate these vids more that I can express in words, it's so important not to feel alone in the struggles we face. Nothing but grateful love here ❤

Thankyou Alex! Shame is definitely huge in this topic. Unfortunately. I think it’s probably one of the major reasons a lot of people don’t get help. But then it creates a deeper wound and a cycle… something I don’t wish on anyone… Also Thankyou for sharing your coping skills!! I have another friend who also likes dancing around and singing songs too!

Needed to see this today. I have had a poor relationship with food for near a decade. It was a reward system and coping mechanism and still is but I am conquering it. I was/am overweight for a long time and 2024 is the year I am moving past food being such a debilitating thing in life for me. Since starting my new routine with my brother, we have been on a very solid program of physical and mental health and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Thanks Patty.

This is a great video. I struggled with eating a lot in the past and still do. When I was dieting last year I'd restrict a lot then binge severely. As I said before I still struggle, but not as much. I can always rely on Patty to keep it real and make me feel okay with myself for having these struggles and I feel at ease knowing I am not alone. These comments are also good too. Your channel is great man. 10/10. :)

Hey dude thank you for posting this video, my eating habits are one of my biggest internal struggles that I've had issues with since high-school (I'm 28 now), primarily with imbalanced carb/sugar intake and comfort/stress eating etc. I've been overweight since I was like 12 and I used junk food a lot as a kid during traumatic and difficult times which, you nailed on the head in this video, was taught to me heh. So this video really hit home for me, and genuinely had some great tips on how to self reflect and manage these issues. I just really appreciated this video! Much love :D

Thanks for making this video!! I really needed this message at this moment. I’ve been working out consistently 6x a week for the past year and a half now and I’ve lost about 60 lbs thru lifting and cardio. I finally started feeling better mentally and physically and your videos and other KZbinrs were a big inspiration for me. But two weeks ago I ended up getting into a major accident and requiring surgery and a few plates and bunch of screws in my bones and now I’ve been emotionally eating junk food while not training. I’ve been feeling really guilty about it and bored eating a lot. I don’t feel as athletic or strong as before since I’m mostly just laying in bed recovering. But thank you so much for talking about this because it helped me feel better about my situation.
