My understanding is that this does not prevent your friends from receiving a notification when it's your birthday. It only prevents your birth date from being displayed on your profile. I have set my birthdate to "only me." I'm hoping it works but would appreciate anyone who has done this commenting here on whether or not it worked. Thanks!
