When a school bus has its red lights flashing, all traffic in both directions must stop. And this rule applies for multi-lane roadways.

School buses are fitted with different types of lights. In many US states, school buses are fitted with strobe lights near the rear of the vehicle on the top to increase visibility.
Also, orange flashing lights will will warn traffic that the bus is about to come to a stop.
And cattle guards on the front of the bus move children out front of the vehicle so that the driver can see the passengers crossing in front of the bus. Convex mirrors too, help to increase the visibility of the driver.
Penalties and fines are high and stiff for those drivers that pass a school bus when the red lights are flashing. In Ontario, Canada and some United States, the bus drivers and others can act as witnesses to get a conviction of a driver in a court of law.
In this day and age many people are operating dashcams, and some school buses too are fitted with cameras, so it is more likely that drivers will be convicted for passing a school bus.
Don't pass school buses when the red lights are flashing.

Hello. Thank you for the video. I drive a school bus for special needs students, and I want drivers to know that the STOP arm on the bus should not be treated like a STOP sign on the street. Do not pull up to the STOP arm on a bus to stop. This is very dangerous because there may be students crossing in front of the bus, and you are stationing yourself in their line of travel. Many students anticipate the vehicle will stop several feet away.

Loved your video! Thank you. As a school bus driver and instructor your information was 100% accurate. I tell all my student drivers running the red lights on a school bus is just about the worst thing a driver could do to adversely affect their driving record. As far as vehicles passing from behind, not so much as it is generally too difficult to see around the bus. Especially on two lane rural roads. What we see in Oregon is approaching drivers charging the amber lights as we are preparing to stop. And of course, those who just don't pay attention to the red lights when we are stopped are run through them.

Thank for the information I was driving and when I pass a curve a saw the bus with the yellow lights flashing and when i pass close like 12 feet’s the bus turn the red light on with the stop sign I didn’t have time to stop so I pass the bus with the red light but it wasn’t my intension to pass the bus with the red light I feel so sorry and guilty , that was 6 months ago but never had a situation from the court , but now when I see a school bus I slow down and put more attention

I presently live in Louisiana where you can pass a stopped school bus with its lights flashing while travelling in the opposite direction on 5 and 7-lane roads where the center lane is a bidirectional turning lane. To me that sounds dangerous because any aggressive driver who's in a big hurry can use that lane as a passing lane, right next to a bus loading or unloading kids.

i suggest a part 2 that identify the stop in all different scenario , when driving in the opposite side , if it happened that the bus school took a long time for a particular situation ,in perpendicular way with bus road , when there is solid ground in the while driving in the opposite side . thanks

If a bus is STOPPED on the road, flashing lights and sign OR NOT, think about stopping anyway. I nearly passed a stopped bus (from the opposite direction) because there was no stop sign and no flashing red lights. It wasn't until the doors opened and kids were getting off, and a mother yelling after me, all nearly at once, that I realized it was a regular dropoff. I ended up stopping mid-way down the length of the bus. .

Two Questions one what would be the one very rare instant where you would be acquitted of passing a stopped school bus? two I what about the city busses like Lanta Metro do you have to stop for them if they are picking up/dropping off people or can you pass those.

I do have one question so I was stopped when I saw the lights flashing yet the bus pulled beside me on the opposite side as I was stopped does that mean I’m good sense I wasn’t moving ?

Sadly, not all states enforce the school bus stop sign runner laws. I drive a school bus in South Carolina and even though it is against the law to pass a school bus with their red lights on, it's nearly impossible to enforce because it's required for the bus driver to be able to positively identify the offending driver (because they won't simply ticket the owner of the vehicle) and video evidence is not permitted because it considered a violation of the driver's privacy! Running a school bus stop sign is one of the top causes of child fatalities at bus stops, but many people just don't care that they might kill a child, all they care about is getting away from the slow school bus. Every school bus driver hates stop sign runners because we care for every young life that we carry.
