For those of you south of the equator, school doesn't start until March, the new school year that is, rather. So there are five school signs that you need to know for the purposes of passing your road test. And unfortunately if you've speed in a school zone, those designated as 30 kilometres an hour, or 20 miles an hour, unfortunately that's an automatic fail on your road test.
School signs are pentagons in shape, 4 of the 5 are pentagons in shape, which means they look like a house, there are two people on the sign and the way I remember that is from that little mnemonic when you were learning English in grade school, "when two vowels go walking, one does the talking". So that's how I remember the school signs, is that there's two people on them.
The first school sign gives you advanced notice that there is a school in the area, and if there are children present on the roadway you're gonna slow down and reduce your speed. The second one indicates a speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour, between eight and five, during the day, during school days, so if there's a professional development day you don't have to do the posted speed limit.
The next one is the time and the speed. And then finally if there are children present on the roadway then you have to reduce speed.
And finally the last one is a regulatory sign, it's white background with black symbols on it, and it designates a crosswalk. So those are the five school signs that you need to know for being successful on your road test.

Great vid Rick. One more thing to keep in mind when it comes to the back of the other sign. Make sure that it’s the last sign as there could be one further up before the last, letting an adjacent street know that they’ve just entered into a school zone. West Heights on Wren st in Mission and an Abbotsford school on King rd both have this situation.

It also depends on the state- there is a school near my house on the border of Ohio and Michigan. The normal speed limit is 40mph (64km/h) through the state border, but the school limit on the Ohio side is 20mph (32km/h) but on the Michigan side it increases to 25mph (40km/h)

In Calgary, as most schools have playgrounds, all school zones have been converted to playground zones. This means that the speed restrictions apply at the designated period of the day every day of the year. This has made compliance much easier for drivers. They also have an"end playground zone" sign. I'm surprised BC doesn't use these.

My test will be in an urban area but I am not sure if many schools are nearby. The road where the BMV is on is one of the busiest in the northeast portion of central Ohio.

Do one of two things: 1) Have a look in the area around the DMV and see if there are schools - look on Google Maps; 2) hire a driving school to do a practice road test. Super helpful video! I have a question but I think I've asked you this before but just for clarification and since my driving test is on Monday already, when I make a right turn and want to end in the far right lane and I see there's a parked car about a block and a half away, should i turn in to the far right lane and then merge to the left or should i just go straight to the left lane? Hi Mr.Rick, in the US the speed for most school zones is 20. So during the summer do you have to follow the speed limit of 20mph, even though the schools are not open. And during the driving test should I follow the speed limit for the school zone or the regular speed limit that everyone else is driving.

It really depends on the person. Also, 7-10 days before your test, hire a driving school and take a mock road test to ensure that you have all the skills required to pass a road test. I just have a question, the driving test on my area has some 15MPH speed bump ahead signs on the 25 MPH residential area, so my question is, I need to reduce my speed to 15 MPH to pass the bump and then recover my speed to 25 MPH and slow again to 15 MPH to the next bump or I need to keep the speed to 15MPH between bumps?

You can speed up a little between bumps. But slow before the bump, and the take your foot off the brake to go over the bump. You’ll get a better ride if you aren’t on the gas or brake. Cheers Rick

Hi Rick, My DPS in Texas that I have a driving test appointment coming up, there is a high school and elementary on the same long road. It’s a big neighborhood. Okay, just to clarify. It says “end of school zone” on the sign, but there is children present that are walking home. Do I go 30 MPH (the posted speed limit) or do I reduce my speed? If you're in a designated school zone, you have to do the posted speed limit on that sign; if you're just in a school zone area, then you can go slightly slower, but the examiner is going to expect you to go the posted speed limit, which is going to be 30mph (50kph) in most cases. Hi Rick , there is a school near by the DMV I am scheduled to give a road test . There is a one particular road which has the speed limit as 30mph then after like 2 min there is a board on my right that states " school zone ahead " and does not mention any speed limit and after a while it says " school zone ends " . Hi, Rick, thanks for this video. Waw...school signs are very confusing for the purpose of the exam. A reduced speed of 30 km/h is ok. I do this and I'm ok. But to leave the rest to the driver's judgement is not ok: if there are children present (they can pop up from anywhere)..if it's M-F...if it's a PA day, etc. If you don't see children you can go 50 km/h, but if you do the 50, you fail your test :) for not doing 30/km/h, even if not posted...I read that somebody failed for that, going 40 in a school zone. The rules should be much more clear than this, if you happen to have a say to those regulating school zones. So if I have the exam on Sat, let's say, do I go with 50 km/h? I don't have school children to know when school is in session or in vacation :) Waw, that's like leaving it to the examiner to decide if it's ok and me not knowing in fact, if it was or not :). Those signs should not leave it at the driver's appreciation or the examiner's good mood. In any part of the world the signs should be clear as day and night. And no signs at the end of the school zone is again misleading, why do I have to look for the signs in the opposite direction to see the back of those?! Very nice of you to explain to us all these. I am complaining about regulations not being clear, but I thank you, Rick! I'll watch the video again :)

And yes, these only have to be obeyed if school is in session. On PA days, you don't have to obey the signs, but know that Catholic and private schools may have different PA days than those of the public schools. Hi Rick, thanks for your reply, as always! I failed the G test. I had a great examiner, one of the best, my instructor said, but my emotions got out of control and one day in advance I knew already that I am going to fail because of my high adrenaline rising and rising every hour. The morning of the exam I had like a fog in my head already. I drove like speedy Gonzales :) I did not expect to pass my G for the first time, no..I know experienced drivers who failed the first time. Still...I did not expect of myself to do such silly mistakes. No, I am not saying about small mistakes, but a big one right (I missed a stop sign when the examiner asked me something- I can't drive and talk yet, hahahaha) at the beginning of the test and from then onward, things got our of control. I drove well on some portions, even the examiner said so, but I went high speed one some boulevards. Do you have any suggestions about how to keep the speed constant at 60 or on the HWY, other than looking at the speedometer? Since my highway lessons, I tend to speed...not in 40 zones though..only on the 60 streets and of course, on HWY..not much, around 10 km/h..especially when changing lanes and merging. And on boulevards I tend to go with the flow of the traffic, feeling that I impede the traffic going slower.

Let’s say I’m on a main road where the speed limit is 60km/h, and I encounter a school zone sign without a posted speed limit. Would I remain at 60km/h or slow down for the sake of the road test? If I need to slow down, to what speed? (I’m in Ontario if that makes any difference)

On the test route (in Kingston, Ontario,) I’ll have to take a main road where the speed limit is 60km/h, but along the road there’s a school sign. Just the neon pentagonal sign. Nowhere does it indicate I need to slow down from 60, but should I anyways to maybe 50 for the sake of the test?

So I live in San Diego and my behind the wheel test is on 12th Sep next week and There are 2 school zones with the pentagon shape school zone sighs with yellow/blk but there aren't with the regulatory sines below them for a extra infos as the time or the speed limit. So basically it is better to just drive 25mph(20 to 30) at the school zone either I see kids present or not to be safe to pass the test,right?

i would drop down to 25mph yep. u can ask the driving instructor before your test to just make sure. just do not go over 30mph. i did my road test up here in canada already but i watch these videos to always be refreshed :) goodluck on your test.

You will get demerits for driving too slow and not gathering the correct information from the signs. Thank you for replying to answer my concerns! Yes, the school zone that I would drive around for my driving test coming up Wednesday 12th with the pentagon yellow/blk sigh and that is it.no regulatory sigh with the yellow/blk school zone sigh to say more details or anything.So I was believing that that means as long as I don't see any kids present then I shouldn't reduce the speed to 25-30.but my friend said that he was told to reduce the speed because he was on over 35 at the school zone.and I didn't remember if he had to reduce the speed even though he didn't see any kids,or he missed the kids present and driving over 35 so that he was told to reduce the speed.so I started confusing what I remember the traffic rule might be wrong...but I got it now! I just hope that the kids would be around during my test since my test is on Wednesday 140pm so it makes so much easier that I know for sure to reduce the speed and like I mentioned in the first question,there are 2 school zone with the school zone signs.I drove over there again today to check one more time to be sure about every thing and one of the signs says /has the regulatory sign says"25mph when kids present" and the other one just has the yellow/blk pentagon school zone only.

Thank you so much Rick for your message on my driving test day.it It was really kind of you to do that for me for the day! My route that I was expecting to happen didin't happen unfortunately so I got too nervous and made stupid mistakes with four way stop and other roads with stop sighs...(any stop with right of way)...Unfortunately where I live,people speed so much and almost never see to yell and be kind each other and if you are doing the right thing on the roads,people get irritated so quickly and hunk on you to tail gate you to every mean thing you can think of are what majority of people do here..I cried a lot during whole entire my practicing time..and of course that situations attacked me on my driving test too..I was doing right on the four way stop so I started going but those inpatient people anyway start to go to ignore my right of way and I had to stop because they keep going anyway and long story short,they all made me look just so bad that I know nothing about the right of way most of time...one of those awful situations made me blind to see another car started going at the same time of me with speeding in such narrow road,the car almost hit me...My eyes started watery with knowing that I failed..but still maintain not to cry and finished my test.The examiner asked me what happened for that situations and let me explain actually.I explained it honestly. She told me to work on that more,but I passed the test.I seriously cried...I was believing that I go home with a failure stamp on my face with lots of tears to everything..I always get stage fright for any situations and I did of course on that day too so that I made stupid bad mistakes even though I was doing fine most of time during my long practicing days and time in the past over month with all those mean people here I live..My husband kept telling me you passed,that means you weren't that bad as you think how you did other wise you would have failed.I always give my self a very poor credit for anything so I thought that I did horrible for the test.. Well I passed but I will keep practice to get better to deal with people here safely lol...

Hi Rick, thank you for the wonderful videos. I learnt a lot from you but unfortunately i failed the class 5 road test because of the school zone. From my understanding about the yellow pentagon without the rectangular sign on the bottom means that it is a warning there’s a school area nearby; proceed with caution and slow down to max 30 km/h when there’s a kid at sight. My question: if the pentagon sign is located before (start) and after (end) school front entrance without rectangular sign at the bottom, Should i slow down to 30 km/h, assuming no kids around? It’s confusing me that they don’t put the rectangular sign which clearly it’s the front entrance school? I hope you can help me with this confusion.

I know when the school zone ends its the back of the Pentagon, but how do u know when the white 30km sign ends? also if there is no posted speed limit but it is a residential area where sometimes the roads are tight do I stay at 50 or slow down?

So a house sign and rectangle sign school signs with no speed limit posted, we should just be prepared to slow down for students but do not slow down to 30km if no speed is posted? I don’t know the difference between house shaped school zone sign and rectangle school zone sign ? Hi Lin Angela - Thank you for your comment and query. And don't feel too bad: many, many veteran drivers don't know the difference either. Only if the sign has a white and black rectangular speed sign affixed do you slow down - and only during school times. Often that school time is 8-5pm. As well, know when professional development days are happening - you don't slow down on these days either. I would also counsel you to take a mock road test with a driving instructor; he or she will be able to tell you where the school zone signs are and where to pay attention. So when there are children you have to reduce speed and when there isn't no children you can drive at normal speed
