I certainly don't "love" my job but I started to really appreciate it when I realize that I could really balance it with hobbies. I think when I was younger, having a regular job and doing hobbies sounded like a failure in some way because you didn't do anything big. But when you live a life when you have a normal stable job and time for hobbies, it actually great.

I feel like also one of the reasons why people hate their 9-5 job is because of social media. They think they have to be an influencer in order to have a fun life. They see what those people have and they want to have the same. There is nothing wrong with working a fun 9-5 job people need to stop comparing them self :) We need nurses, teachers, doctors… and there are a lot of people who do love their 9-5 and do it with passion I love that!

My 9-5 is PERFECT, extremely well paid, big honored name, can work from anywhere, nice office, NICE COWORKERS, best bosses BUT I cannot bring myself to like 9-5 because of philosophical reason - I don’t think we exist here in this wonderful life to work, romanticizing 9-5 is like gave up for capitalism myth that lies to us. Also, for capitalism reason, it’s too evil to blindly like my job when the system is SO unethical and dehumanizing. I can’t abandon my self aware and class consciousness just because I’m comfortable with my 9-5. I have the most happy life as a working class in capitalism but this doesn’t stop me from rebelling it for what truly human meant to do.

Can I ask what you do? Like a line of work you are in, not specifically where you work. I'm trying to figure out my passion and would love to know about different jobs... Working from anywhere actually sounds great. But I agree with you. I'm also having a hard time accepting that we have to follow a certain work model that was suggested by some bloke in the 19th century (who btw first demanded we work for 10 hours lol). We upgraded in so many ways, our technology is so much more advanced, so why don't we also upgrade the way we work? One example is scandinavian 6 hour model, which was suggested years ago, but it seems it's barely pushing through, although all the reasearch suggest that people are way more effective, motivated, productive and happy because of a better life-work balance. A happy worker is a good worker, right? Especially since in Europe we tend to starting working a bit earlier in the morning... But in a money driven society it's hard for those ideas to come through.

@johanna.helena having space and time for ourselves is SO important. Like you said it’s the first step to detach from corporate mindset and to find our true meaning of life. I try to constantly asking myself what fulfills my soul and trying to make daily decisions based on what makes me happy from the root of my being rather than what’s my career goal or how I can be better at work. Having time and space both physically and mentally is so important, most people even if they have time but because they are in poverty they don’t even have mental space to think about anything than making money and that’s how capitalism sucked soul from us.
@juneasia787511 сағат бұрын
I can feel what you said in my soul. I trully believe we are not here to be doing a meaningless jobs. It's good to work, but very different when you work for yourself and follow your passion, like crafting something, having contact with it, doing it with your hands AND working less hours. Like you said research confirms people are happier and healthier and more productive working less hours, but people at power do not prioritise what is good for people but what brings them most cash. I work 9-5 at UK uni. The jobs is much better than other customer service jobs I've done in a past but I'm almost at minimum wage, I don't see myself wanting to progress to a manager and hate the office politics. The only bonus is I mainly work from home otherwise I could not cope with this. Jobs as they come are just modern form of slavery.

I will always despise working a 9-5 because i don't believe that we should have to sell our time for 40+ hours a week in order to survive BUT I do remind myself of the benefits I have. I work remotely 3 days a week, the office is a short walk away, I get well paid, I understand what I'm doing, I don't love some of my colleagues tbh but my work is appreciated & regularly commended, I have one close work friend, and i love one of the managers i work closely with who is so supportive, I'm glad i have evenings & weekends off and my remote days allow me amazing flexibility to be able to enjoy my day.

I love your last point that the 9-5 is a tool. Recently quit my 9-5 because I hated having no time and living in London where wages just don't allow you make future plans without having two incomes. Some people hate their jobs because the economy no longer makes the trading of time for a salary that doesn't cover living costs worth the stress. I took the leap and found a remote job that means I can now travel the world and create travel content on KZbin in my spare time. I have a new '9-5' that I don't hate because it gives me something integral to my happiness and the change in perspective was me no caging myself into my old job. I practiced gratitude for all the good things I had in my old job whilst I looked for a new one but sometimes we must listen to our bodies and move towards our purpose. I can understand that a 9-5 gives so much security but that security can quickly because a cage if we are unhappy and unwilling to take risks.

Thank you, Johanna, for this video and for sharing your thoughts and experiences! I worked at the same 9-to-5 job for more than 5 years, and I truly loved and enjoyed it during the first 3 years. It gave me great opportunities for growth and amazing colleagues. But during the last two years, it turned into a toxic environment when new people joined, and the crisis hit. It became really hard to be there and do the work-I felt like I was living at my job. At my job, our schedule was 10-7 pm (or sometimes 8), which left no time for myself or my hobbies. I left two months ago because it started to affect my health. Now, I’m just resting, trying to figure out who I am without a job because I used to identify myself with it and trying to put my effort into my hobby (by the way, also KZbin 😅) since I didn’t have enough energy for it while I was working. Sorry for the long read 🙏 But I still truly believe in good jobs with work-life balance, and I agree with you about stability-it’s also important to me.

This video is so refreshing! That's exactly the situation I want to be in this year ( and actually marketing tech is a sector I'm looking into so we're pretty similar!) ...I've been self-employed for many years and I really feel burnout from some aspects of it, not much the financial stability even If that helps but also the fact of not being alone, having shared responsibilities and learning from others and all the points you discussed are exactly what I'm looking forward to! You sound so content and I also appreciate you sharing how the first job you tried was not the right one and then you changed because I have a fear of choosing the wrong job/company, so it's ok to try and change. And as a creative I'll probably also be looking into passion projects on the side because that's vital for me. Looking forward to watch more from you like this!

I got laid off and also retired at the age of 52 and honestly, I wish I’d done it sooner. The 9-to-5 grind always steals your freedom for a paycheck that barely scratches the surface. My advice? If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s, start saving for FIRE now (Financial Independence, Retire Early.) And if you’re in your 50s, invest smartly and break free from relying on your job. Market trends, like the Trump Effect, have made millions for many, including me. Stay focused, stay consistent, and remember financial freedom is within reach if you make it a priority.

I have been having the same thoughts recently too, but actually a stable well-paid job, especially one that is remote is actually pretty awesome. It means you can get a mortgage or easily move and find a new place to rent. It means you can save and have investments, and you can still try out side businesses and your hobbies. I have been trying out self-employment for a long time and I found it much more difficult than I expected. Remote working wasn't really a thing last time I did office jobs which was a big reason why I struggled with them, but I think that if I had a remote job working from home that would actually work for me pretty well. I agree that freelancing and self-employment doesn't suit every personality type or every skill set or every person situation and you have to weigh up what is right for you. There's also the option of working part time and being self-employed part time.

Actually this worked completely opposite for me. I mean having passion outside of the job. I became frustrated that I have to spend 8h at the office and 2h commuting unable to do what I really love. Too tired to do it. I spent my weekends solely on my passion to get as much of it as possible. After 2 years I burnt out. Both in my passion and my job. Hate both to guts.

We seem to work in similar fields and I could relate on lots of it. I liked the part: your 9-5 does not define your personality. I took me some time to learn that. What came into my mind in addition was that I learned so much within my corporate job (been working and growing in my role since 4 y now (also studied something completely different)) that I believe I would have not learned somewhere else or freelance in that timeframe. really developing skills and practicing setting those boundaries you also spoke of, trying out things in a kind of save setting, time management, communication with clients and teams to only name a few, are all skills that can be so useful in the future if it’s in private life or freelance ❤ love your content and to follow along, thanks for sharing

People really demonize the 9-5, as if working 7-7 or 12-8 or anything else is any better. People who are self-employed/entrepreneurs often work even longer and crazier hours than 9-5! The only alternative to long work days is to work in social media (which we can’t all do because the world needs teachers, lawyers, doctors, scientists, surgeons, plumbers, construction workers, etc. to function) or to not work at all (which is not realistic unless you’re born into immense wealth). I get it, we all hate capitalism and working 9-5 makes us feel like cogs in a wheel. But find something you’re passionate about that gives you a sense of purpose (not just income), advocate for a work-life balance, and don’t make your job your entire identity, and you can live a perfectly joyful life.
