I just got puppies and training them has been great practice for me when I have children one day. Teaching me not to reward bad behavior, how my energy affects them, how to be patient, how physical punishments or even yelling doesn't help, and how having a structured schedule is key (same eating, peeing/pooping, play time schedule everyday etc). A lot of bad behavior is avoided by just giving them play time and running for 30min-1hour. Lots of discipline and consistency is necessary for having well-behaved dogs, same with children.

My collie was leash reactive but made a total turnaround. All the "desensitizing" with treats and such have been worthless for us. And believe me. We tried. Taking charge from the moment you leave your house, even just by not allowing him to run through the door, and requiring him to be attentive to me during the walk were the first steps. Going from a harness and long leash back to a simply 6ft leash and collar was the second step. Giving my dog something to do and taking charge to go left/right/back when he sees another dog was the 3rd step. Slowly doing those things closer to other dogs was the 4th step. Doing those things as we pass other dogs at a close distance was the 5th and last step. One year of daily training in total, and not all with steady progression. But it can be done if you commit to it and don't get discouraged if results are not as instant as when Cesar does it. What Cesar calls "calm assertive energy" is so important but you can't fake it. What helped me was this idea: When we see another dog, get rid of the "Oh crap, another dog" mental response. Instead, remain calm and aware, and be excited that a training opportunity has presented itself. No feelings of dread and waiting and seeing how your dog will respond. But instead an upbeat training mode. If you need to cross the street, if you need to turn around, if you need to have your dog walking left and right and in a circle so he focuses on something else, all those things are good. But don't tense up. Don't focus on the other dog. Don't exhibit anxiety and worry. Do it in a way that is about you and your dog, not whatever other dog happens to be around. The whole point is that the other dog does not matter. Now my dog is less leash reactive than many, many other dogs in my neighborhood. Just the other night we turned a corner and ran into another startled dog who instantly barked and lunged (which is how my dog used to respond in that exact situation). My dog did not respond, kept walking the same way I did, and shook off his tension and anxiety when we were past them. I was so freaking proud of him in that moment. Because I had no time to give him something to do, or to help him, but he just did what we have been doing as a standard response. He just kept walking with me past the thing that he found scary. And it was all him. It felt incredible.

Fergus seemed excited but not aggressive to me. He just wanted to have fun with the other dogs and his barking was to get rid of some of the excitement, but the owners misread it because of fear and a lack of understanding, then Fergus picked up on their anxiety which made him a bit nervous aggressive. The play bow gave away his real intentions! He was so happy to be around other dogs during the pack walk.

I would say to always remember it’s your behaviour that is making this. My dog had different problems but they were dangerous (running away from home to go and worry sheep and she had injured and killed some lambs). I realised that I had to think how I was being 24/7 and not just when I was out on a walk. So there was no use totally allowing her to run the house and expect her to behave because I’m trying to ‘Cesar’ her out on a walk. So she never, and still never walks first through a door or gate. When I walk downstairs she has to wait or follow slowly behind me. She does get on my bed, but only when I invite her. She never eats from my plate and I don’t allow her to stand near me or beg when I eat. That doesn’t mean she never gets a treat, but it’s put in her bowl when I finish. And when we walk, she doesn’t walk ahead of me on the leash. Most importantly, I had to exude assertiveness. It took about a year of that every day. And what happened was that she learned to look at me as her mentor, if you like, rather than, in her case, just a person who happened to be going on the same walk as she was. Or in your case, someone who needs protection, but who then gets annoyingly in the dog’s way when it’s trying to sort the other dog out and who therefore needs correcting. I mean, that’s pretty much what your dog is saying ‘look I can have this, but you are getting in my way, now stop it and stand back’. In no way is your dog seeing you as someone who tells him/her what he/she should be doing. I wonder if you could get someone to video you as you walk so you can see how you interact with the dog?

When you have a dog that is bred to hunt, you will never get rid of that fear. That's why one needs to be a better hunter than the dogs. Funnily it has turned out, the human is a better hunter. I sometimes walk three greyhounds. Their instincts are so powerful (...and their muscles are so powerful...) and they hunt to please the owner/walker. How I calm them down is hunt the prey before they see it and then warn them and say assertively with low voice that they need to stay calm (as I've already seen the prey). Then I praise the dogs for spotting the prey and calm them down with low voice and a lot of calm praise. Did I mention we live in a city with a lot of squirrels and city bunnies?

My GSD is a service dog. He wears a harness custom made for him. I also use a prong collar & leash on him. He helps me with mobility, keeps me from falling, gets me from point A to point B, i. e., through the airport, walking any distance. He can be dog aggressive though I’ve had him around other dogs all of his life. He listens to me very well but one hard look or sound from another dog close by gets a fast reaction from him. He’s protective of me as I’m chronically ill. We have done many training classes that he excels at. Obedience, CDC, Scent work, some agility, & we’ve competed. I am concerned if he’s off leash. He’s big, strong & very quick. He still listens to me, but there’s that one second reaction if he thinks another dog might become aggressive. Puts me on edge as I’m not as physical as I used to be. I’m always exhausted due to my disease but can react quickly if need be. He lives with a small 12 yr old Bishon/Shih Tzu mix. Boundaries with my control create a relaxed home environment. Zy goes almost everywhere I go & I always have to be alert when other dogs are in the vicinity. I’m too tired & sick to have to do this over & over again. Zy has torn a muscle in his back leg which is healing on its own, per veterinarian recommendations, leash walking for a year, plus nightly applications of DNSO rubbed on his leg. He still has a wonky leg but uses it constantly, swims, runs…I’ve trained dogs for decades but I’m slowing down (67 yrs old). I continue to take him out & he does encounter other dogs. I use corrections then loose lead which helps. I have made him lay down while other dogs are present. He does very well for the most part , but if another dog acknowledges him, he’s ready to rumble. I do stop it quickly, but I’m tired of having to be on alert constantly. He was bred for IPO work so he has hard drive & intelligence. He learns fast & likes to communicate & interact with us a lot. My husband says I can be pretty tough on him. I’m constant & make him do things he doesn’t want to do, like sit & wait before he goes outside. Wait to get out of the car. Impressive lead corrections if he even starts to act out. I have to. I have had GSDs since I was 19 yrs old & started learning & doing training with them for decades. I’ve handles show dogs & taken others dogs through obedience classes. I have taught many, many others how to help their dogs through classes & private lessons that I taught. I think I might be missing something or either he’s reacting to my weakness due to illness. I’ve been to one of your seminars years ago & read your books, & follow your videos. I know in person is best, but we do what we can do, right? What do you think Cesar?

We recently adopted a dog who'd been running loose for 3+ months. He's our first dog (we've only had cats for the last 30+ years) and between our inexperience and his background, things are still rough occasionally. One problem is that although he normally does well on a leash, if it's raining or the grass is wet he won't follow me out on the lawn--he just lays down on the patio. We've been attaching the leash to his harness and I look forward to seeing how he reacts to using a slip leash higher on his neck!! Thanks for this video and the others I've watched after finding the first one about a week ago!

I think you're wonderful, and am excited to try this. Just a side note; if you're going to host content and a KZbin channel, it would seem much more genuine if you at least replied to some of the comments/ questions left for you. Makes me feel taken a bit to see so many watch and attempt to interact just to be ignored after they view/subscribe. Just my opinion though. Thanks for sharing your wisdom anyhow. 🙂
