"You gotta earn, walking down the street." That is great advice, and it's true. If you can't walk them around the house and/or the yard, you're not going to be able to, on the street. Make them earn it. Master your skills indoors, before you expect your dog to perform on the street. Pick calmer/quieter times and places, when you transition outside.

A lotof dogs seem reactive because the owner gets nervous and tightens the lead which makes the dog edgy. This is a laid back dog. It may react differently sometimes but still isn't leash reactive.

This is the first video on leash reactivity that DOESN’T assume the reactive dog is aggressive or fearful. I have a 3yo German Shepherd who believes he has a God given right to play with every dog he sees. He weighs 90lbs and tries to turn his leash into a snatch strap so he has to be kept on a short leash. Other trainers have recommended showering him with treats when we approach another dog. It worked the first time, now he ignores them. So I like your approach of not relying on treats. But I’d like to see how your methods work and how you adapt with a more strong willed, driven dog.

I was on a walk with my dog when I found this video, I love the technique! She has never been bad on the leash, but we definitely have some issues when she sees people or dogs anywhere. Halfway through our walk, I started using your technique and instantly start a small difference. A delivery person was able to walk by without her barking at all, because she was too busy focusing on me, I really hope to use this every time I go on walks and be able to successfully train my 10 month old Australian shepherd not to bark at people or dogs when we are on walks.

Treats also don't work with livestock guardian dogs that come from a working line as they generally aren't near as food or pray motivated. They're more praise and play motivated. But of course it does depend on the dog as not all dogs come from a working bloodline and in about 5 to 8 generations you can get rid of that preference if not as little as three

Great video and great information. One suggestion I have is to buy some kind of microphone that you can pin to your collar or someplace else on your person because your voice tends to be pretty difficult to hear. It sounds very distant, and I have to turn up the volume very loud.

Am an avid fan.. Thanks for all the direction. I have a 9 month old in tact golden retriever. When loose leash walking he will frequently sit down refuse to move. If I give him a correction he lays down on his side plays dead….any videos on how to address this. He is not a “puller”. If he wanders off will respond to correction. I have limited the number of treats I give him while walking and do not lure him with treats when he lays down….he does get up after a couple of minutes…always on his terms…I did give him constant treats while walking for a number of months but as I mentioned have now limited them. Initially to get him moving from a sitting position would toss treats ahead of him to get him going but realize this is not a solution….thanks for any tips

I think you are terrific, however, both the prong collar and ecollar have helped save more then one of my foster dogs from euthanasia. It's not for every dog but we can't deny it's benefit in some circumstances! PEACE

This is great..But..Do you have any tutorials on how to train a reactive dog? We got our Boston Terrier just before Covid hit and he was not socialized whatsoever! We can't walk anywhere where there's another dog or he becomes completely unruly and tenacious. Hi. I have a leash reactive 11 month old German Shepherd. I am making progress with him loose leash walking. He still has a way to go when seeing other dogs in our path. There are times that I am able to get him calm and in a sit-stay. Even so, he will still growl and bark at passing dogs. He is not lunging but growling and barking. How do I address this?? I adopted a 4yr old Great Pyraneese. He's about 115lbs. (He's about the same size as Luna in the video.) He doesn't have a lot of leash training if any, so he's not listening and he's reactive. I have a disability, so I use a dog harness that has a handle that helps me steady myself and hold onto him. What length of leash are you using in the video? Great tips. However, your Great Pyrenees is NO WHERE NEAR the reactive dog that I have. Would you make a video that shows what to do with a 40# twirling screaming dervish? We have made some headway in the control and go the other direction as you demo'd, but no where near the positive result, and it works for us only if there is 50 feet or more between us and no more than three seconds to see the dog.

I have an australian shepherd pup, she turned 1yr old bout a month ago and have reactivity issues, barks when being barked at or when she sees the other dogs are more timid and it all started tnx to a pommie a neighbor got and he barks at everything one day she just had enough of his barks and started bark back and it triggered this reactivity issue :\ hopefully after we'll follow this video it will change for the better as our current dog trainer told us to work with a semi choker~prong collar and apart from having her bottom neckline hair gone due to "corrections"... I dont see much/at all improvement (not to mention I didn't like the idea of this collar on her to begin with!) and if this video shows that there can be another way, more humane and it can work for my pup then I'll take it! also gotta say that she wasnt in heat just yet and we havent spayed her just yet cause our vet said "only after her first season..." but I wonder if it matters if she will get her first heat before spaying her or it's ok to already spay her since she's already 1yr old and she been same size more or less haven't gone any bigger since she was around 10months old or so... so why waiting any longer, the wait for it actually stresses me as I worry if her behavior won't become worse during/after her first season... will put this to a test for a week and come back with conclusions whether or not it worked for us (really hope it will as she will turn to the true sweetheart I know she can be when outside!) *little sidenote~ my dog's name also Luna

I am working on leash reactivity and we are at a resort with a lot of stimuli. Shortie wants to bark at every one and every sound. He knows sit, stay, wait, go play and leave it. Should I say" leave it" for the barks as well? I was trying the treat thing, you mentioned, and you are correct, its awful, I can't carry enough treats and it does not work. I was making him sit, and then just look at me. Shortie's training was done stay and train, so now I am trying to learn and it is difficult; I feel like I am confusing him? I'm going to try this at a gated dog park. The gate will prevent any fights between the dogs, but still provide the stimulation. I will then try to gradually walk in closer proximity to the dog park. Anytime I can't get her attention, we turn away and try again. I already have my pup waiting before going out the door. I can have the door wide open and she won't go until I say, "OK". But I need to take this to the next level. The leave it command will be next.

I've been trying to get a 'reactive to everything!' dog using this method for about 3 days now and while it has helped with the pulling when there is nothing to stimulate him, he will always find something to go ape$h*! about and has no desire to pay attention to me at all. His nose is his master and I'm getting tired of constantly yanking (popping) him. When there's so little improvement for such a HUGE effort, it's more than frustrating. It seems like he’s a SUPER nervous dog on the inside. Do you take introductions to ANY new thing SUPER slowly? If not, that’s what I recommend. Treat him ANYTIME he’s very relaxed. Anytime he’s barking at something, see if body blocking, then getting him to focus on you, get him to lie down and relax. Sit with him if he’s lying down.

I used to try to get our dog to sit and wait calmly when we saw another dog, and she became increasingly reactive. She'd bark repeatedly and practically pull me off my feet, then would sit and be calm again. So it was a pattern of sit, go crazy, sit. Love this guy because he's not treat obsessed and points out in other videos that owners end up just popping snacks into the dog's mouth without modifying undesired behaviour.

Same! I had to get a behavioral trainer. That plus learning from these videos (cause it’s honestly us humans 99.9% of the time lol) has helped. Some of the things I’m doing: gentle leader, daily training, daily exercise (physical and/or mental) staying consistent with leash corrections( he’s big and will take over if i allow it) it’s only been a little over a month and we’ve made great progress. It’s easier to get his attention when another dog is outside now. The key with my dog is to keep him properly exercised and outside try and catch him before he’s too excited. I get your point and I agree with your approach but this is easier said then done for many dog owners…yes, of course if you take your time and put the dog in sort like environment of board and train, the dog has a high chance of being “cured” but many owners don’t have the time, space and know how to do as you in this video. All I am saying is, you didn’t explain the viewers the different variables that come to play for these kind of issues and how realistic they have to be about it! This video is perfect for people living in a small cities, country side and specious environments, it becomes a lot harder for big/busy city dogs

Martingale collar. I've got a Saluki and she is similar, and the Martingale works really well and won't slip off. Eventually we switched to a harness with a front attachment and that actually helps even better with pulling than the Martingale did.

My dog just focuses the distant dog and will not turn to me, I can't just turn away and give him a treat he will let himself be pulled backwards for a mile even after he can't see the other dog. A bit late, but personally I'd just suggest making multiple "meeting" passes until the dog can calm down enough to meet for real. Like, if the dog can't sit-stay, walk away from the meeting, then come back, then leave, come back, etc. Ideally you should have this problem nipped in the bud before the meeting ever arises, however. If you have the dog fully in control and watching you for cues, they should be able to stay on track even during an exciting meeting with just a bit of guidance (as shown in this video). So probably try improving on both the general walk etiquette AND the meeting etiquette. I'm not a professional dog trainer though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. There's too many potential details to your specific situation that the best I can give is general advice. If you're still having problems just contact a dog trainer.

Pulling, lunging, barking at other dogs even on the great distance. Can't socialize at all. I'm lost. Where do I start?

@@BDTraining will the correction work on the 14 lbs dog with the harness on? If you also could read my situation I explained above would be highly appreciated. Thank you Joel

@@HumanOneGoodGirl possibly. The correction is only part of the “punishment” you’re also taking away the walk by stoping or going the other way. You could also try an Easy Walk Harness, they work well.

I've found harnesses with the front attachment have worked wonders. I've got a Saluki rescue and they had a Martingale collar on her originally. We used that for a while, and she was learning not to pull but her prey drive is f*cking nuts when she especially sees squirrels - she would do the "pull until she's standing tall on her hind-legs" thing, but the harness with the front attachment sort of spins her around when she lunges and it's been quite amazing. She learned very quickly that it's just not worth it.

My dog only barks when someone is outside and when I open the door to let them out. I have another dog. His dad. And he is silent. A lot better. How do I treat his one or twice barking. It’s very loud and very annoying.

I wish you lived closer to me, I’m in Georgia! I’m training my new 5 month old German Shepherd puppy to be my new SD and the biggest issue I’m having is her barking at dogs (and some people at night). I know it’s a lot due to socialization and excitement but I’m at a loss at what to do when I’m outside meeting my neighbor with a dog or at PetSmart. I’m disabled and training her myself. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

My dog will do great if a dog isn't barking at him. On walks he does fine but the minute we walk by a dog behind a fence barking is when he looses it. He doesn't bark at it but I can no longer communicate with him as he seems to get so worked up he is not hearing me or noticing the correction pop. I wish I could get him to ignore the obnoxious barking dog on the other side of the fence. I've tried stay there and working him and had the owner ask me to not stop becuase if her dog got out she didn't know what it would do. This is the issue. Finding a safe and good opportunity to be able to work these issues out is not super easy. So I keep walking by without stopping and hope I am making progress.
