Excellent advice. Old school basics....As a retired Police K9 handler, your methods are sound and effective. NOTE to new dog owners: seek help from a professional trainer if you can't do this on your own, 90% of the problems I've seen in over 40 years are with or because of the owner/handler!

@@sekurmsekurm7343 you didn't even watch the video and have no clue what are prong collars/e collars. Prong collars are less painful than normal collars if your dog is pulling. E-Collars are the last of the last possibilities for dog to correct it's behaviour before it would be put to sleep. If all your life you had a chihuahua and yorkies, on behalf of dog trainers and professional dog owners, don't state your BS over the internet making people think prong collars are bad. Even in the video 80% of the job done was not through the collar itself but with positive reinforcement BUT prong is much better for you dog than normal collar if it's pulling/being aggressiive since it signals wrong behaviour instead of choking the dog. If the dog ain't pulling prong collar isn't doing any harm to it, it's exactly how it works.

I am back after watching to confirm it works. I just got my 1st dog a few months ago and was getting tired of him pulling me. I did my best to keep his leash pulled into me tight but after 5 mins of walking and keeping the leash tight my arm and shoulder were already getting stiff. But just a few mins after I took him out with the prong collar for the 1st time it was night and day difference. I followed his tips and now my dog is already starting to follow me and I can let go of my previous grip I had on the leash and he stays on me. Actually helped me so much. Thank you ❤

There are a lot of other training courses there from puppy courses, obedience, leash and off leash (called Unleashed) for e-collar training if you want your dog to be trained to be fully off leash. I'm training my friend's dog while he is out of town for a few months.. Koda(9yrs) is a big dog, like rottweiler/husky/idk what else he said she is.. anyways, the pulling on the lead had to stop day one. I bought her a slip lead and using this technique she walks next to me amazingly. She does still get distracted by dogs.. and we are working on off lead recall still.. But with my blue heeler(3yrs) using these methods, he is perfectly off lead trained and I can walk down city streets with him freely. It's truly the best! Thanks so much from Cincinnati!

That's awesome! I love GSDs. They shed like it's a mutant superpower, but it's worth it to me. My last dog was a GSD mix and we had to put her down when she was 15, and that was from an aggressively growing tumor. We have two dogs, an outdoor cat (they get along like their own little pack), and a bearded dragon. We love them dearly, but they are just well loved pets. Our GSD was a functioning family member, far past a simple pet. Did you know Garret has very in-depth courses at DIYK9.com? Garret's the training in this video. Many people spend 50-100 hours trying to figure out how to train their dog to walk with manners on a leash where you could buy Garret's course for a very small fee. Less than what my wife and I spent on our last trip to Taco Bell. Considering how long dogs live, it's a no-brainer investment.

Jeff from Castro Valley, Cali, here. I can absolutely vouch for this training from Garret. He posted a video just like this a few years back and have tried it with my 4 year old American Bully at the time that was 105 lbs (RIP now). It legitimately took around 10 mins for him to walk by my side, loose leash, and no pulling. Fast fwd to now with our new 1 yr old American Bully, 50 lbs, and same thing. Loose leash, no stress. Balanced training with the prong WORKS!

Have a corso puppy now 7 months. Been doing this since 4 months and he walks like a pro. His drive and pain tolerance is insane but it still works. Started with a martingale, taught some leash pressure then introduced him to prong at 4 months. Let him wear the prong, put it a little oversized, associated treats with it whenever I put it on and now he’s golden. Herm Sprenger 2.25 does wonders. He’s now 86lbs and well behaved.

Used this method with my 2 year old male boxer when we started training when he was a pup. He walks next to me with zero pull and a loose leash every time we put it on. THANK YOU! I've trained dogs for over 30 years. I started out with this method and always had great success but over the years I've caved in to a softer approach because of all of the social pressure. I am retired, but currently training my own pulling puppy and taking so long to get desired results. I really needed this reminder to get back to basics. A softer approach while your dog damages their trachea on a flat collar may keep the Karen next door from bashing you throughout the neighborhood, but it is not doing the dog any favors.
@troy5292
@troy5292 28 күн бұрын
Yeah, which is actually more kind? To get the training done in a few sessions and move on, or spend weeks or months trying to do this when you could have been done and enjoying walks with your dog? If something this simple takes weeks or month to train, the other methods are obviously just unclear commands to the dog. America has unfortunately flipped and now everybody thinks they have the right to chime in on how you live your life, and they are always right, and you must comply with what they say or you're a mean and cruel person. I'd just act deaf, ignore them, and keep walking along as if they don't exist. They nor their opinions are worth my time or mental effort. It takes two to argue, so silence leaves them nothing to debate, and they just look like an idiot yelling for nothing. If they want to call the cops, I'd encourage it. I'd ask them to make sure they ask for the Police K9 officer on duty to be the officer to respond but tell the Karen not to be surprised when they show up with their dog wearing a prong collar, e-collar, and flat collar and/or a choke chain. I've walked Echo on a prong collar for the past 18 months through streets, Lowe's, Home Depot, the vet's office, all over the place, and nobody has ever said a word to me. If they ever want to, I'd happily offer to have an educated and civil discussion on prong collars or e-collars. I'm sure anybody that wants to gripe about it has zero true knowledge on how to use these tools correctly anyway. Knowledge is power, and they won't have the power/knowledge to back up their trash talk.

He walked nice and respectfully for me (not perfect, but a massive improvement already). I’m now excited thinking about going on future walks with him. Thank you for these videos! Our little girl Iris is our rock and smart as a whip. She is 1.5 yrs old, mixed pittie/vizsla (or GSP maybe?) but she is grumpy and sassy. She is fast af and knows basic commands. I even trained them to sit so I can clean off their front paws before they go into the house. We are our own villains in our story. We HAVE to do better for them. 🎉🎉🎉 thank you!!!

When I initially started watching these videos, I felt bad for the dog. Overtime, I could understand the reason for this training and I felt it was necessary. When you really love your fur child, you should teach it good manners, potty training etc as it is your responsibility as a parent/ owner. Giving treats or pampering is not enough, it should be taught how to LIVE. Not training a puppy is the problem for many of the issues. Thank you for your channel because I don't own a dog but I'm able to understand the mentality of dogs and how we can make a better place for them. ❤

I just started my 4 month old corso w prong today. She is very hard headed but got the picture real quick. I'm sure she will need a few more pops but a big difference. My 1 year old corso has only received 2 pops in her life, and she stays w me through all kinds of distractions. Brookville Indiana

I will try this method soon but definitely without a prong collar because my husky was freaked out by any collar or any type of hook around his neck. It takes 2 weeks and several bites to get used to walking on the leash outside of our garden. Now we can walk any time and I can put him on leash any time without bite. And also he is waiting the walks. I adopted him on 2023 december 18, he was 1 year old. He was never on leash before I adopted him. And I don't want to screw up what I already achieved.

You're not alone! You're doing great. We adopted our husky around the 1 year mark. He was free range outside and it has been tough. We have him used to the harness but still pulls a lot. I'm scared of the collar as he can pull his head out even if it's super tight
@norbertmihaji7080
@norbertmihaji7080 3 ай бұрын
@@KelseyHubley Thank you have a good luck. This happened with mine at first time outside he was freaked out by something and he got to go to the opposite direction and yes his head slipped out from the collar. It was set to the tightest. It was hard to catch. He is quick. We practice with retriever leash since a week. Unfortunately we could not practice the leash walk in the garden until now because he started to flee and he submissed himself and he didn't move if I put him on leash. After he stopped the fleeing I brought him out to the street by my hand and he started to walk slowly but he was scared. And the same happened when we arrived back home he didn't dare to go in the garden I had to bring him in and he started to flee again after we got in the garden. This is why I'm afraid of the prong collar. I don't want that he feel the collar and the leash and walk can hurt and it can be bad.

I've had my German Shepherd mutt for 8 years. Took him to a positive reinforcement moron of a dog trainer when he was a puppy. She convinced us to use a martingale collar. Just bought a Sprenger collar due to what I have learned from your channel. Just had the first enjoyable walk with him ever. Took four light corrections during the first block for him to get the hang of things. Thank you!

After the second video I tried your techniques with my 3year old 90 lb American Bulldog/Pitbull mix and within 10 minutes I had her walking at my side and stopping when I stop with just 2 u turn corrections. I rescued her 5.5 months ago and she’s been a demon trying to walk. Wish I had found you and these tips sooner! Time to keep working more with her to perfect her healing. Thank you for these videos! 🙏🏻

We have a Labrakita/German Shepherd(?). He's 22 months, about 24in and 100lbs, and this technique does work! I have not obtained nor utilised a prong collar yet, though he does have an e-collar we use for correction. I walk him sometimes w/o the e-collar, and that can be a substantial workout! Going to make sure and obtain the brand of prong collar suggested. He does walk far more chillaxed with his Grandma (who is 71) but with me he can be a double handful at times, lol. His drive is very high, and i take it seriously that it's my responsibility to correctly direct that drive. I also enjoy being able to give him his treats when he behaves well. The demonstrated methodology and shared knowledge is appreciated greatly. Happy Holidays!

Thank you DIYK9.com for helping me train my dog. I did this with my Husky/Treeing Walker Coonhound mix at 4 months. ONE corrective U-Turn was all I needed, and it was a messy one at that because it was my first ever. Everything else was cleaned up with sudden stop pops and food rewards. We do figure 8's, speed up, slow down, left and right turns, and she still walks well at 21 months old. I practiced in the backyard a couple days and hit the road. I had to do one more corrective U-Turn as the level of distraction jumped up significantly, and now we can walk up on rabbits (one of her triggers) and I can put feather light leash pressure to ask for a sit (from the Leashed course training), and we just stand there until the rabbit takes off. Echo stays in the sit.

I was really hopeful when I saw this video. We have a pitbull mix that is 5 years old and my family never had a dog. We have him, since our cousin surprised us with him. When we walked him he was constantly pulling so we were trying to look for solutions and people to train him but no one really knew what they where doing and of course the training was expensive so when I saw this training method, I was honestly very happy. So when I walked the dog, I put on the prong collar, and I started doing the methods and after a few minutes he was walking right next to me with no pulling and a loose leash, and was making eye contact, and when I stopped, he stopped. So overall this guy know what he’s doing. You just got yourself a new subscriber. ❤😂😊

I did this with my 106lb Working Line Eastern DDR black German Shepherd but on a flat collar. She picked up very very quickly and I hardly had to correct her. Now keep in mind her pull strength when I started was probably more that Sunny’s was in the beginning of this video. So, like he said, you don’t necessarily NEED a prong collar if you don’t want one, can’t get one, or aren’t aloud to get one. They just do the work 10x easier and quicker.

Golden Standard for leash training. I bought my first dog a West European German Shepherd and mother f*** was pulling like crazy. I went to a trainer/class in my city and they did not work at all for me. I found one of American Standard Dog Training videos before with the prong collar training a while back, and after following the video and training my dog after it really only took 2 days of leash training for him to behave and walk with me the way I wanted him to! I still always had the prong collar on my dog but he never really needed correction. Very effective training that also allowed me to walk my dog without the leash on.

I got an 11mth field trial lab who was pulling all the time and I can confirm it works. I was able to solve the issue within lets say half'n hour. Ok, from time to time he forget the rule but that's ok, he is young and powerful but a short "remeber lession" helps him to find it way. Thx a lot, much appreciate your hints. Keep it up. 🙂
