Hi there ! I am from Germany, been a K9-Police Officer for many many years and i can tell you, this is exactly the right way to treat a dog during a walk ! It is all about leadership and reward in the right time.. you walk the dog and not the other way around ! ( but i have to add that not only treats works as a reward, but also a praise ( "good boy/girl " or just pet it slowly on the side of his head, or a toy which you can use to play for a few seconds.. after that short play take the toy away and put it back into your pocket and the dog will just be in attention mode ) This is the way i was taught decades ago and it works every time i get a new dog. This video is an excellent demonstration and it is nice to watch the learning effect on the dog. You can see similarities when you watch Dog packs or even Wolf packs out in wild nature. The packleader always gives the direction and forces the others to follow. Submissive dogs are the best dogs ! And those dogs are happy in their submissive role ! Nothing more to add !

The very important thing people should know about dogs is the stress/chaos in their body when they are pulling on the leash or running around untrained. When the owners do the training, they take on the alpha role, and the dog doesnt have to have the stress of being in charge, they are just doing the jobs they are told to do and trusting you in your position. Its a much better mental state for them to live in. Very encouraging seeing all the comments about people doing this with their various sized dogs without prong collars and seeing success. Cuz the correction can come from a tugging. I had a daschund that i took a couple walks to train to walk with me, not pulling, but it only took a couple walks not with me to get back to old habits. Consistency is key.

You literally changed my life. I have a 3 year old husky (from a puppy) and is now 3, who pulled my arm off, is so reactive and I dreaded every walk. She was out of control and we were one pull away from an accident. I had 2 trainers who told me to use positive reinforcement only, and for every single walk consistently used the stop start technique with a gentle leader to no avail. She was becoming unwalkabke and I felt horrendous I was not able to give her the exercise she deserves. I watched lots of your videos, deciding I needed a new method. I can honestly say, by following your technique just with a slip lead instead, I was able to get her to heal (and walk slightly behind) in 10 minutes tops. I then spent about half an hour cleaning it up and she can now greet a dog calmly instead of lunging at it, stays in heal when a cat walks infront and doesn’t get distracted by wildlife. Her attention is on ME. I am so excited to be able to take her on lots of walks as that’s why I got a husky! Genuinely, you’re a lifechanger.

I’m doing the same with my whippet. Honestly, most breeds don’t need pinch collars. And if a couple days or weeks is too much to train a dog, then fuck, don’t get a dog. Most behaviors won’t become habits unless you practice them a lot anyway. This 20 minutes won’t last long. So basically this husky PUPPY is damned to wear this pinch collar until eternity cause she won’t learn how to walk without it.
@jamesdixon9918

@@vanclemmonsdamned to wear a pinch collar for eternity😂 his whole goal is to get your dog trained to a level you can walk off lead perfectly with no concerns
@vanclemmons
@vanclemmons Жыл бұрын
@@jamesdixon9918 well good luck counting on that. Lots of dogs (if not most, if not all) realize when they aren’t wearing something that previously caused them harm, and when they know it’s not there, they act up. So you either have to reincorporate the tool in your training from time to time so that the dog doesn’t forget what the deal is or they will try to go back to their old ways slowly but surely. Obviously this heavily depends on the breed but as you can see, Garret still uses these tools even on his older dog. Dogs aren’t stupid, and if they are independent minded and stubborn enough, you will always need the tools, and you will always need to keep them in check. So might as well not rely on an aversive tool.
@jamesdixon9918
@jamesdixon9918 Жыл бұрын
@@vanclemmons I couldn’t agree more that from time to time you will have to top up that memory in their head, the same way that you have to practice anything in life to maintain a high level skill. But that doesn’t mean the dog is “destined to wear it for eternity” as you stated in your earlier post. Simply topping up that memory every now and again is more than enough for a well trained dog to maintain that standard.
@vanclemmons
@vanclemmons Жыл бұрын
@@jamesdixon9918 obviously the eternity part was exaggeration, I didn’t think I would have to explain that. However, my point remains, i.e. these videos offering a perfect solution in 5-10-20 minutes are complete lies. You don’t resolve a problem like that in minutes, because it takes practice, like we established. Sure, it will work when the prong is on the dog’s neck because it fears it. But if a behavior needs practice anyway, why would I resort to aversive, pain-inducing tools when a flat collar can do the work just as well in most cases?

The U-Turn is something new, but we always used the sudden stop to make sure our dogs were paying attention. It's funny how many people are amazed when you start, stop, start, stop, and the dog keeps in pace with you, like it's something unheard of. A vibrating collar is also a god-send. The dogs can be 50 meters away, and be called back in the middle of playing, without injury, chasing, or yelling at your dog.

OMG!!! Finally, the prone collar came in yesterday, we were only able to try it today for the first time...what an immediate change in the energy! This is the same Husky that we rescued at the beginning of this past November; she was extremely unfocused, unruled, and incredibly stubborn, I didn't want to give up on her, but I felt discouraged by her behavior. I grew up having dogs, even large dogs, they were all very well behaved and training them was easy; I never thought I would ever be faced with this type of challenge when I decided to save this dog's life. However, the walk this evening was so much more pleasant and relaxing, I felt so relieved to see the change in the energy of our dog the very moment we put the prone collar around her neck. Both my hubby and I binged watching your video yesterday and today, just to make sure we would follow your instructions correctly. OMG! Utterly impressed with the results, in much less than ten minutes the dog was in full attention mode; needless to say, the walk was nice and smooth, very a few reprimands in between, and not as many treats required for rewards either, pets were sufficient to enforce her good behavior. While walking around the block, we encountered a few dogs barking at us from behind their gates, and we were glad to observe no reaction on her part, she ignored the barking dogs, she had her focus on my hubby all the way through, and she was rewarded each time with pets. We also encountered an outside cat who followed us home; at first, she spotted the cat, but right away her attention turned back towards my hubby on her own. This is truly one of the best videos I have found so far on how to properly walk Huskies on a leash. This has finally put a smile on my face today! Thank you!!!

There is nothing wrong with this method of training. How much more happiness for dog and owner to have good behavior. The correction has to come the instant of the bad behavior. I obedience trained my collie when was 12, although I was a rank amateur we still won the little class we took against adults. If my life had been different I would have loved a chance to really get a dog trained like the ones here.

I bought the prong collar, 15min in, with 4-5 u-turns and 2-3 sudden stops, he was walking right next to me with the leash as loose as it gets. @@avcave Sometimes it's a safety issue for the dog owner and for the dog. I live in Canada and I have a rescue Husky and she pulls like crazy. Winter is near and I don't want to fall and break a bone. If that happened who would walk her? Would I trust her again or would I bring her back to the shelter? Sometimes depending on the situation, dog, breed it is the best choice. Presently my dog does not seem happy on our walks. She is hyped up stressed and sometimes refuses to eat treats (steak) that tells you how stressed out she is. She pants like crazy, her tongue sticks out, walks in front with no sense of direction just like Lexie in this video. I will try this method both for her and for me.

@priscillacastillo5619 @Keefer24 @lindarenaud2907 Hi there, my opinions have since changed slightly on this matter, though not for the reasons some of you have listed, or other 'attempts' to change my mind. Linda, I agree that when it is a safety issue NOT to resort to such methods, AND when guided properly by a certified professional IN PERSON (not through youtube videos), these kinds of collars can be reasonable. I still have yet to do more research, but it is certainly not something that works for me and my dog, and never will be. I believe it Is more of a temporary, quick-fix solution that should only be used in emergencies (that is, emergencies for your dog, for you OR your family where one or more parties is at immediate risk without this method). I do not see it as a long-term crutch; it is uncomfortable for the dog and many people know nothing about how to not only use the collars correctly, but also adjusting and putting them on properly (not too loose, and kept directly below the chin where it should stay) otherwise it can damage their trachea or cause physical and emotional trauma. Dogs are not kids, but it does not mean we should be lazy about training them long term so that both us and them can walk happily together. My dog pulled a LOT when I first got him, and he is a rescue so was super nervous and barked at other dogs. Now he can walk at my side, off leash, and the worst he'll ever do is let out a small whine. He doesn't need a prong collar to do all of that. I'd be ashamed to make him wear something like that for the rest of his life and not try some other methods to give us both long-term relief. I am not a professional dog trainer, Keefer, but I do not see any such credentials on your page either, nor any other evidence of your dogs happiness, which is less than I can say for myself... Though I truly do hope all of your dogs are safe and happy as they can be, at the end of the day, that's what matters.

No joke, folks, it WORKS!!! I have recently started walking dogs as a side gig. I love dogs, I have never trained dogs. My first assignment is walking two dogs for a client--1. Australian cattle dog 2. Border collie mix. The dogs are great, but they have no manners, they pull worse than any dog I have ever walked or seen, I wish I could run them on a farm but I only have 30 minutes with them in the suburbs. After yesterday where I was trying to short leash them which lead to nothing good. I found these American Standard videos. I didn't even use a prong collar. Simply using the abrupt uturns with a jolt correction, then reward. It works!! The dogs continually checked in and were rewarded. I cant believe it worked but it does!! Thank you!!

Tried this last week with the prong collar and method and it worked perfectly. I am so impressed. My dog had been pulling relentlessly for 8 months (since when we adopted him at 4 months old). It was so bad he used to walk on his hind legs the entire walk. It only took 15 mins to see total change. Gentle occasional corrections maintain it. I notice this has also helped with overall listening and recall at park when off lease and playing fetch. He no longer chases after humans in an aggressive way. He’s so obedient now. It’s like once we stopped him from dominating us while we walk it changed his whole personality. He’s so much happier now. Not anxious at all. Not choking himself. Thank you for this video!!!

Said they’d take him away if I did. But I didn’t want to use them anyway (bc he’s my replacement for kids I can’t have) We healed his emotional scars finally and at 3 years, he just let me brush him without a fight, so I thought maybe we were at a level of trust I could do the tough training. He knows many other commands but as a husky mix, this was the one thing I couldn’t seem to tackle. And when we got home he went into happy spinning circles on the lawn. 2 long frustrating years, I’ve tried every walking technique in the book with my Aussie mix. She always tried to lead the walk and was easily distracted and reactive. So many different leashes and collars, I was ABOUT to try the e collar until I ran into this video. I was a skeptic, but this video has changed my life. After the first correction with the prong leash, and consistent rewarding when she was walking beside me, she walked my pace loose leash for the first time EVER. And she even avoided running after cats and other dogs. Thank you , a million times!

3 yr old Husky / German Shepard. We got him from the shelter a few months ago. He’s very strong and pulled as if he was on a sledding mission. We tried a flat collar (still pulled), then prong collar (before we watched your videos and still pulled). Finally we watched your videos on the correct type of prong collars and how to properly fit it to the dog. We got/did everything you said. Finally, after a couple u-turns and treats, the leash pulling significantly improved. For my dogs safety and others, I’m grateful you are teaching. Thank you!

I have been considering a prong collar for my huskies for a long time. I watch this video today and said what the heck and picked one up. I sized it up and placed it on one of my boys who is an aggressive puller. Within five minutes I was able to drape the leash over my shoulder and he was walking next to me. He has never done that before. My only regret was not using one sooner.

Wow! I have a 60 lb Golden Retriever Mix that we rescued last year. He makes walks so frustrating, stressful and unpleasant. We had a trainer come who showed us how to use the gentle lead and that did stop some of the pulling, but not for long. Flynn (dog) loses focus so quickly when we walk him, he lunges and gets super crazy when buses, landscape trucks, noisy vans, bicycles, squirrels, bunnies are in his sight, I could go on. I just went outside for 10 mins with him and it took 2 corrective turns, (and yes, he yelped on those corrective turns), (and some yummy ham as a reward when warranted) for him to stay by my side or a few paces behind me. .holy crap. I am looking forward to using this training later tonight when we do our evening walk. This was amazing. You totally rock.

Great demo of the prong. I adopted my GSD 1year ago at age 3 1/2.. Very dog aggressive and leash reactive, re-homed twice prior to the adoption.. Went to a balanced trainer, started doing exactly what you demonstrate. My trainer said never use treats, I think because he trained cattle dogs for 20 years where treats were not an option. It took me longer to get the engagement with my dog and I think that may be why. I may try adding teats sparingly and see what happens. thanks for the idea and video!
