The beginning of the video was so true for what I've experienced. I'd speak to people who work in stores or restaurants or whatever and they would say "I'm sorry, could you speak up?" or "what?!" I noticed an immediate change in my pronunciations using this technique. It helps to try and read an article in a newspaper or magazine with the pen in your mouth and then re-reading it again without it to really work. It also help to record yourself speaking before and after using the technique to really see the improvements.

My words come out crystal clear, I've recorded my speech to confirm it, but I find that many people predominantly rely on visual observation of mouth shape and movement over sound. It's incredibly frustrating since my speaking technique is abnormal but the sound of my speech is perfectly fine. During the pandemic when we had to wear masks people had no problem understanding me, but as soon as they see my mouth they disconnect.

Thats because there is another thing in your mind. Can come from social anxiety for example. You are fairly anxious about talking in public or talking to people, your heartrace increases and you breath and talk faster. Next time you notice it, try to calm down and think about this comment. Nobody will murder you when you talk but they will listen better and longer when you talk slower. If you notice you go to fast, breath in and out deeply 3 times while really focussing on your breath. Your heartrate will get much better immediately and you can focus better

And you're a native English speaker ! Imagine how mumbling come easy when, with my French accent, I try to record something in English. It takes a lot of rehearsals, many visits to "text-to-speech" web site to grab the pronunciation of the less common words -- and usually many takes as I inevitably stumble at some point, or worst, *think* that was right and discover I was barely understandable even by myself ! I will definitely get a try on that pencil trick. It is not that silly as I'm pretty sure I've already heard someone mentioning that for waking up mouth and tongue muscles before a speech. But maybe do you have some specific trick for people having a "foreign" accent ? Anyway, thank you for your great job and for sharing your experience with us !
