For those of you who will be skating in the street: 1) Indy mentioned that the toe stop drag is not for hills. She is absolutely right. It is pretty much for low speed only, and I think it works better indoors. If you are new to roller skating and want to skate outdoors on your neighborhood street, know that many streets have a slight incline that can get you rolling faster than you want. But, if you have a little bit of space, you can use the plow stop. Dirty Deborah Harry of the Dirty School of Skate has a good tutorial on this. For my use - moderate to higher speed / trails and hills - I found the toe stop drag to work much better and be much safer when SKATING BACKWARD. This is not for beginners exactly, because you have to learn a safe, preferably moderate-to-high-speed, front-back transition (i.e., turn) first. Once you can do that, you practice toe stopping backward. I found that to be MUCH safer on my neighborhood's asphalt roads than toe stopping forward. I found that it did not to eat my toe stops as much, and it seems to have eliminated the problem I had of my TOE STOPS FALLING OUT WHEN BRAKING FORWARD - obviously, a major safety issue. YES, I DID TIGHTEN THEM FIRST. It's a forward braking safety issue on roller skates at moderate speed on asphalt. You need to learn to turn around safely and brake backward. FOR THE RECORD, INLINE SKATES WITH A STANDARD HEEL BRAKE DON'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE OF HOW THE HEEL BRAKE IS DESIGNED AND USED. Most inline skates use a standard heel brake design that is very sturdy but does not adjust. It may come in more than one size or style - for standard urban / fitness skates vs. triskates. Rollerblade's beginner skater's ABT brake is different. It really is for beginners. I've never used the ABT brake. I learned on a standard inline heel brake from day one. I'm glad about it, because I think it would be an annoyance, now that I can drag stop (t-stop), plow stop, lunge stop and sometimes hockey stop on inlines - and do crossovers and the duckwalk manual. On inline skates, you can brake at moderate to higher speeds going forward on a heel brake, no problem. You just gotta push down / use enough force and have enough of the brake left to do it. And by braking, I mean that I brake on asphalt all the time. Inline skate heel braking is also a fairly stable position - so, I would argue that inline skates may in a way be safer for beginners to start on, if you want to skate outdoors. But you can learn to be safe on roller skates, too. The trick is to practice what you need to stay safe. Please note: MANY INLINE SKATES HAVE BRAKES, BUT SOME DO NOT. Obviously, look at the skate or ask before you buy one, if that is an issue for you. It does take a little practice to learn to t-stop even on inlines, although I think it's easier to t-stop on inlines because of the narrower width, roundness and alignment of the wheels. The in-line alignment means all four wheels can help with braking, provided that they are in a flat setup. This is good, because the greater traction means you should be able to slow down quicker and in a more stable manner. Most inline skates have a flat setup. Ones that might - some slalom and possibly hockey or artistic inlines - are not all that common and can at least sometimes be rearranged into a flat wheel setup. A flat setup means that all wheels touch the ground. A rockered setup means the toe and heel wheels don't touch the ground while the middle ones will. A rockered setup is good for tricks, slalom and turning but is less stable at higher speeds. An anti-rockered setup is often used with aggressive / skate park inlines. We use smaller wheels in the middle than the heel and toe wheels because of the grind block in the middle. So remember: inline skates often have a heel brake, but not always. If not, look for a flat frame / flat wheel configuration setup inline skate if you're new and want to skate inlines. Most inline skates will probably be like this. Now, I will say: I think it may be easier to learn some tricks and artistic / jam skating on roller skates rather than inlines - certainly to land jumps - although my roller skates seem to be a lot heavier than my inline skates, because of the plates, trucks, wider wheels, etc. vs. narrower inline skate plastic or aluminum frames (and no truck / bushing assemblies). Anyway, back to the topic of braking: 2) The t-stop seems to me to be harder to do on asphalt roads on roller skates than on inline skates. This is because of the thickness of the wheels and the fact that you would use 2-4 of them together to do so. On relatively smooth surfaces like hardwood flooring, a gym floor, concrete like in a warehouse or at a well-maintained skate park, for the most part, you should be fine. The problem surface is mostly asphalt, because it can end up rougher and excessively grippy. That makes it a lot harder to stop and can result in injury - whether due to not being able to stop in time, or a pulled muscle from trying to make it work. Believe it or not, it may be easier to t-stop on harder indoor wheels when outside, or to t-stop indoors on any wheel type. The reason why is because hard wheels usually let you slide a little more. Sliding isn't a bad thing as long as you allow enough stopping distance for your speed. Start slow and get used to it. Braking that way can help you build up the muscles you'd need later to brake well on outdoor gummy wheels. We use hard wheels on aggressive (i.e., skate park) inline skates, I think because they are more durable; but they are also good for learning t-stopping and probably powerslides (a more advanced inline braking method that may be doable on roller skates - not sure). Why use outdoor gummy wheels outside? Better grip on the pavement and smoother ride. It can make a pretty sizable difference. Just bear in mind that if you opt for outdoor gummy wheels - I do recommend them over harder indoor wheels if you want to skate outdoors - it might be easier to practice t-stopping indoors on gummy wheels, especially if you're brand-new to skating. Other than concerns over tracking dirt and debris from the gummy wheels indoors, using gummy wheels indoors shouldn't be a big deal. They are fairly soft and have not really damaged my hardwood floors. Side note: fwiw, we inline-dominant hybrid skaters sometimes refer to the t-stop as a drag stop, because we're dragging a skate for braking, but not really making a T. ; ) 3) Yes, wheels are more expensive to replace than toe stops. The reason why is because they sell the wheels in packs of 8, so that you replace all of your wheels at once (at least, that's what inline skate manufacturers tend to do). Compare that to 2 toe stops. ; ) 4) Plow stops are fantastic if you have the space for 'em. In my opinion, the it's the safest stop for new roller skaters who have the space, such as in a neighborhood street. Some trails or sidewalks are too narrow to use the plow stop. That's why I recommend quick feet and learning to transition safely at higher speed, and then braking on the toe stop backward. 5) We inline skaters also call what Pigeon demonstrates a "lemon drop" or "[American] football". (She shows the plow stop toward the end, I think.) To do the plow stop, point your toes in a bit but push out with your feet. Bend your knees like you're squatting down - kinda sitting in your skates - and bring your knees toward each other. That should stop you if you're skating forward. It's hard for most folks to explain well. I mentioned Dirty Deborah Harry's tutorial on that. I've found hers to be one of the best explanations. Sorry for the length. I just know that a lot of you have been curious and / or have been ordering skates - that a lot of you are new to any type of skating. I haven't been skating that long myself - just about a year and a half - but I've also been going out every day and can do stuff like crossovers, skating over manhole covers, getting up and down curbs, trying out different braking techniques, skating on trails, even a little hill bombing. I may be fairly new to roller skates (aka quads), but a lot transfers from inline skating, too. Both types of skates are fun. How useful each type of skate is will depend in part on what you want to do. Roller skates are great for learning jam skating and artistic-type tricks, but they probably aren't the best choice for slalom, roller hockey, trails, or braking outdoors. In some areas like Phoenix metro, inlines are generally permitted at the skate park, whereas roller skates aren't as widely-accepted (in terms of skate park rules). There are probably a couple reasons for this. For one, roller skate plates can have trucks that can interfere with coping. The wheels can also be problematic if they are the wrong style. Inline skates can be a bit more forgiving, although it depends on your inline skate setup and on what you are doing at the skate park. Inline skates are often more consistent in terms of providing adequate ankle support. That said, aggressive skating in inlines or quads (i.e., roller skates) carries inherent risks, as I think Indy can attest. Anyway, I hope that helps. Have fun, new skaters! I hope you stay healthy and can get out and have fun where you are! = D

Definitely much more stable backward, although I concede that I don't feel as secure as using the heel brake on my inlines (but I am a new quad / roller skater). I was a bit skeptical of forward braking on toe stops - and sure enough, I found it not all that effective for anything other than very slow speeds.

I NEEDED this video. I skated as a kid, never particularly well, and just picked it back up this past winter because of school skate nights at the rink (I'm 29 with two elementary aged kids) and I've already gotten so much better than I ever was at 12 or 13, but the very bearest basics on how to stop? It was lost to me 😂. Your how to stop fast and how to go down hills videos helped a ton, but this plowing thing is totally new to me. I can't wait to get outside and practice!

Its so bittersweet to see skating taking off through the power of roller derby. Nothing made me feel more alive than strapping on my skates and just powering around. I miss it so much. The screech of the wheels when going fast through turns. So wonderful just to see roller derby still alive and well and such a passion towards roller skating. I have to remind myself that this just isnt a part of my life anymore or I'd order those gorgeous jack skates in a heartbeat.

Congrats on the warehouse! It's so awesome to see how you're growing. You helped me get brave enough to start skating and I've joined a Derby league too! I still suck at stops though, bc I have zero muscle, but I'll get there. Thanks for the inspiration, ladies!

I'm so glad your channel exists! I am learning how to skate, little by little, and I think I have the most common issue beginners face - locked legs (as in locked knee when standing and wobble when skating) and when I try to stop using my back foot instead my body's reaction is to try and come to fullstop on my front leg. Like my brain knows that I need to use my back leg, but my front leg instinctively tries to step in. I don't want these mistakes to root in me, someone have any suggestions how to get over this wrong leg stop?
