If your dog begs for food when you’re eating at the dinner table or just snacking on the couch, it can be annoying, but it can also be super uncomfortable because then you start feeling guilty, then you give your dog a little bit, and that can lead to your dog eating unhealthy foods and gain weight which is not healthy, and it’s just not a good idea.
But, since so many dogs beg for food, you might think it’s just normal dog behavior, but in fact, it’s something you can train away or avoid entirely if you got a puppy or new dog, so let’s get right into how to stop your dog from begging for food.
-
The first step to take is to never, ever give your dog table scraps while you’re eating or even right after you eat. When you’re cooking in the kitchen, it’s usually ok for you to occasionally give them a small slice of a carrot you’re cutting up or a little pinch of cheese, but when you yourself are eating, never give your dog any food in that setting. It’s ok to feed them their own dog food simultaneously, but just none of your food.
If your dog doesn’t already beg for food, great, never giving them table scraps, and stop doing it if you already do. If your dog does already beg for food, then immediately stop giving them table scraps.
The second step to take is to teach your dog a “place” command that you use during your meals. A place command could mean that when you say “place”, your dog goes to their doggy bed, or it could mean that they go into their crate, whatever. All that matters is that when you say a command, your dog goes to their designated spot and stays there until released. By teaching this to your dog for every meal time, it’ll become routine that your dog will automatically go to their place when it’s mealtime.
In addition to teaching them this command, you could also prepare an enrichment toy to keep them occupied in their place. My favorite is to use a frozen KONG so I stuff a KONG toy with peanut butter, or watered down kibble, or what not and then freeze it. This way, when your dog is in their bed or crate while you eat, they also get a nice little treat that’ll last them for a few minutes, and also, this creates a positive association with your dog going to their place during mealtime. Soon enough, instead of drooling next to your dining table, begging for food, your dog will actually be excited to go to their place and enjoy a nice frozen KONG.
Another step to take when teaching your dog to not beg is to ignore them when they do beg, and rewarding them when they’re doing well. So, if your dog is begging, simply ignore them, meaning no eye contact, no speaking to them, no nothing - just pretend they aren’t there. On the other hand, when they’re doing well like when you send them to their place and they don’t move, periodically walk over to their place and give them a few dog treats. This is classic positive reinforcement, and it goes a long way in stopping a dog from begging because they find out that they actually get more rewards for not begging.
Finally, while you’re training this, since it won’t be overnight that your dog can learn and perform the “place” command for a few minutes on end, start with low goals. For example, the first meal you try out using the “place” command, send your dog into his place for a few minutes with his enrichment toy. Once your dog finishes the enrichment toy whether its the frozen KONG or lucky mat, even if you aren’t done with your meal, free them with their release word and then continue the rest of your meal normally. Your dog will probably immediately go back to begging, but just ignore him like I said earlier. Each day, extend that place command little by little, so that your dog holds his “place” even after finishing his enrichment toy, and soon your dog will be able to hold his “place” for the entire meal!
To learn how to teach this “place” command that’s really the foundation of stopping a dog from begging, check out this tutorial I made on how to teach “place” linked here on the screen.
