I have done this for several years now. But, I put mine in paper yardwaste bags & close the bags & store them in a cool spot in my basement. I bring them up in the Spring & pot them up in the house. I put them outside when the frost danger is over. It’s not the idea of saving money, it’s just really nice to see them start to grow again! 😊
@marigeobrien Жыл бұрын
That's a good alternative if you have them. The important thing is to keep them in the dark and in a container that breathes. I'm doing mine again this year. I lost a few last year but most of them came back. I agree that it's not about the money-- I just hate to see plants die when they don't have to. I used to keep them in the house over winter but it was a strain to have to water them all winter. This is so much easier!

I have some geraniums that survive the winters outside in London. They grow in pots near to the house. They look rather dead at some point but then they sprout again the following year. They are a bit slower to get going again than the ones you can buy from the shops each year but that's o.k with me. They catch up before long.

I keep mine in their balcony planting boxes, just carried in from the garden in November. I trim the bad parts off, cut back the water, place high on the table to avoid frost, but to give them daylight. The glassed-in balcony room is perfect. I have geraniums which are 7 years old. I take 3-4 cuttings in the fall, in case one would die.

I live in Northeastern Montana..I have had my geraniums for years...the middle of September I cut them back to about 2" clean out all the dead leaves and debris from the pots..I store them in the back room of my garage where its dark most all day( morning sun only) and keep the temperature at 35-40 ° ..I also do this with other outside plants I want to keep..I water lightly on the first of every month from October-April....after the last frost I bring them outside.. tempering them in the sun for a week or so before setting them out for spring (taking them in at night or covering if the night temp falls below 40) this has worked well..but I'll consider trying to dig them up next fall..It will save space in the garage if I compact them in a box not store them in the pots ..thanks for the info..😊

My geraniums are in pots. I trim the plants back to about 4 - 6" and remove most of the leaves. I then put the pots in my garage and cover them with a cardboard box, so the plants are in the dark. I water them a small amount about once a month. You will see new growth appear in February or March, so I water a little more. Then when it is warm enough, I put them outside. I have some plants that are more than 3 years old. I have taken cuttings from them that I rooted in water to make additional plants. Sometimes I lose 1 or 2. @@LearnHow2 thank you so much. I accidentally cut most of them. I thought I would like to make it sleep in a dry compost in the garage (before i saw this video). Which do you think works better? This method or putting them in a dry compost and chuck them in the dark garage? Appreciate your help. Been panicking as I am one of the lockdown gardeners.. newbie

@@mjackson9067 I would advise my method. Air needs to be able to get to the plants to prevent mold forming.

If i tore some of my geraniums roots will it still grow? I tore some when i went to transplant them in a different location. I still had the very middle base root system but the roots wrapped around the outer soil i tore a bit.i guess my soil was too moist to try to transplant. Please help me with this cause i have severe ocd and im big worry wart dont know if i sabotaged the plant. Worried it will die. If it helps it came from a nursery and i planted lastnight and realized i needed to move elsewhere this morning. So how the roots mold to the pot they were no longer molded to that shape i broke a bit off tryinf to dig it up. I replanted but fear it will start yellowing to die

Hi Heather. Please dont worry. They are strong plants and will withstand some root damage. From what you say everything will be ok. Best wishes.

Do we need to water them when they’re in the box during winter? Will they dry out? Thanks for your tips
@LearnHow23 жыл бұрын
I just give the roots a very light mist spray once a month. Do not wet the plants as this will encourage mold growth. Keep safe.

Can you cut down the geraniums already in a pot, and leave it in their soil for the winter months, rather than storing them in a box?
@LearnHow2 Жыл бұрын
Yes I have done that and it works.

Bring the plants indoors in pots and they will flower all winter and can be put out The following year
@randomviking86763 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what I did every year. I had some last well over 20 years that way! I put them in a south facing window for the winter. Standing out back in 3 feet of snow, I could look up at that window and see them happily blooming. ; )
@zvarcolacu3 жыл бұрын
That is ok if you have enough room for them inside 😊

Hi Patrick. I just dont have the room. Keep safe.
