Something that every firearm (and potential firearm owner) should know is how to store a restricted or prohibited firearm. Not only is this something you need to demonstrate knowledge of during your Canadian Firearm Safety Course (and Canadian Restricted Firearm Safety Course) but it's also great for promoting firearm safety no matter what kind of firearm you own.
Keeping firearms away from those who would misuse them, either accidentally or deliberately, is an excellent way to promote public safety, the confidence in our firearms laws and licensing system, and just the right thing to do.
In this video we'll discuss the procedure you'll need to follow to safely (and legally) store a restricted or prohibited firearm in Canada.

As a female Canadian I disagree with guns. I’m sorry but guns lead to school and mass shootings. I don’t wanna live in America for good reason. Someone’s always getting caught in the cross fire. I don’t want to loose any of my family. And before you go saying well they can just go to jail and it’s a “mental health crises” it’s not. It’s putting an easier way to kill people. I’m sorry but I won’t sacrifice voting for calmer gun laws just so you people can overcompensate for something we don’t have a need for.

First of all, how does this have anything to do with you being female? Why mention that? My wife is also a female Canadian and she loves guns 😂 Secondly, school shootings are common in the USA where you can buy a shotgun at the same place you buy your milk and eggs. School shootings in Canada are exceedingly rare. You can’t compare our system to theirs. It’s not even close to the same. So that doesn’t help your argument. The few school shootings on record in Canada were perpetrated by young people, mostly teens, who obtained firearms illegally. Generally speaking you must be 18 to be eligible to take the safety course and apply for your PAL. A school shooting is a crime of passion, nobody is going to take a course, put in an application, and wait months for a license just to legally get a gun to shoot people with. And lastly, firearms are tools. Not weapons. Just like a vehicle, a knife, a lighter, a baseball bat…. Any of those tools can be used to harm or kill, but we don’t hear politicians asking for bans on those things. The people shooting up the streets are not law abiding firearm owners. My guns aren’t on the street, they are locked up in a safe in my home with multiple layers of redundancy so they don’t fall into the wrong hands. The people responsible for these crimes are either mentally ill or part of a gang, or both. Those people will get their hands on whatever they want, regardless of what laws we have in place. Nobody is overcompensating here. And you have no argument, because the statistics don’t agree with you. Fewer than 1% of legal, licensed firearm owners commit any kind of crime, not just firearm related. While over 60% of said crimes are perpetrated by repeat violent criminals that our justice system is failing to deal with. Maybe spend a few minutes on stats can before you shit on someone on the internet with a comment as emotionally charged as the same comments politicians make to fool you into voting for them. You’re not much more than a pawn in their scheme when you behave this way without actually doing your own research.

As a male Canadian I disagree with cars. I’m sorry, but cars lead to drunk driving and fatal car accidents. Someone’s always getting caught in the crossfire and I don’t want to give up my safety just so you hooligans can “enjoy a hobby” and “get places faster”. What do you need a car for anyways? You can walk to places just fine. The only people that should have cars are the police and the military, because they’re the only ones who are responsible enough to handle multi-ton hunks of metal hurtling down the roads and downright dangerous speeds.

You do not need any type of locking device on your restricted firearm while it’s in a gun safe/vault. Here is a direct quote from the RCMPs website: “Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into; OR Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.” Hence that being said, if the RCMP ever ask to see your firearms being stored it’s better just to have the lock on so you don’t have try to prove to them through court that it’s legal.
@canadianoperator
@canadianoperator Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, being right on a technicality might feel like you beat the system, but having to explain to the court that your “cabinet” is actually a safe, or any number of other such technicalities, and the leaving it up to the judge and a jury to decide if you’re right, while also taking a chance that they may not have as much experience with firearms as you, is at the very least a gamble, and at the most a criminal record. In both cases, that was a hell of a run on sentence 😂

@@jaydenmcconnell600 So what's the point of your initial comment anyway then? You can ask any instructor - the way it's taught is that restricted firearms are always double locked. Once with a locking device, another time in a locked container, whatever that container is. When I teach firearms safety on my channel, I don't want to teach at the base limits of the law. I want to teach well above and beyond, so that someone who doesn't know the technical details doesn't ever have to be in a position to explain themselves. If you want to personally do things differently, that's fine. But saying "at least I'm not spreading disinformation" is no excuse for adding something that hasn't already been covered, referenced to, and ultimately is not going to have a positive effect on someone reading it who's already watched the video and read the description with referenced material.

I am going on 15 years in the civilian side of the Canadian firearms side of the fence with 20yrs in the infantry before that. I have done many things in my career but have not ever called myself an "operator". The term is somewhat reserved. The other thing, and this may just be a generation thing but, people tend to trust information being delivered by people not hiding their eyes. Your information is accurate and delivered with confidence so you don't have to hide behind the shades. Please don't take these comments to heart but please accept them as a way of allowing the channel to mature and be taken seriously among your peers.

Absolutely no offence taken. And I appreciate someone like you taking the time to write a well worded comment rather than attack me for my age, demand that I stop doing something because they don’t like it, or being passive aggressive because they can’t take a few minutes to write a well worded message like yours to a perfect stranger. So, no, no offence taken at all and I always appreciate constructive criticism when I can get it. About the name - I didn’t pick pick it because of a static meaning of the word that I had in mind. In fact, I chose it because I thought it was a catchy name, but also one that people can reverberate with and take whatever definition of it suits them and their shooting style. As for the shades, I have nothing to hide. I speak straight, truthfully and unapologetically. And some people sometimes misconstrue that as being rude, or insulting. I have been raised to have a high level of honesty and integrity, and I promise you that my sunglasses have nothing to do with that. As well as being a physical aid (I’ll explain in a moment) they are a throw back to my gaming channel, where I also wore sunglasses when I streamed. It was a way to remember the past while looking to the future. As for the more practical reasons, I am legally blind and very sensitive to bright lights. In my line of work it is very common to have lights when shooting a scene, but sometimes even the light coming from my main window (which is about 30 feet long) is too much for my eyes. I get eye strain and fatigue as a result and it makes it difficult to focus on things. So, I wear sunglasses. I also have nystagmus, which is involuntary movement of the eyes. In my case, it’s horizontal. I don’t want that to be something I’m constantly thinking about, which can affect my performance on camera. And, I don’t want it to be a distraction to someone watching my videos. I know you couldn’t possibly have known all that, and it’s because I rarely talk about it. But now you know :) In any case, thank you for your criticism and don’t hesitate to speak up in the future for any other reason. You are the best example of how it should be done. Directly, but respectfully, and many KZbin users in general could learn a few things from your respectful etiquette. Thank you for being a member of this community and for your valuable feedback :)

I use trigger locks only on every single firearms I own, non-restricted and restricted. And like many people I know I go above and beyond for safety reasons, mostly in case of a break in. Both my mother and I hold RPAL's and we're the only 2 living in the house. I have 2 big gun cases where in one I keep all my ammunition, and the other one holds my firearms. All handguns are stored seperately in their own case (with trigger locks) and dual locks on the case and placed inside of the big gun case. I never keep ammunition with any of the firearms at any point and time and always have them in seperate cases (ammo case, handgun case & long gun case) all of which are individually locked when going to the gun range. All my long guns have the bolts removed (and stored seperately) and also have trigger locks on them. It may seem over the top for many but if the RCMP ever decide to come to my house to inspect my firearms, which they have the right to do so at anytime, I know for a fact that there won't be any problems whatsoever and it will be a trouble free visit. Thanks for the video.

This is great. Thanks for the thoughts and for watching. However, the RCMP has only the right to ask your permission, and you should always say no. They can’t come to your home anytime, and they don’t have a right to inspect your firearms. There are extremely rare situations in which that doesn’t apply. One is where someone has complained and due to red or yellow flag laws, and at their discretion, they may search - but they need to ensure they have valid reason to because irrespective of qualified immunity they can still be accountable for unlawful search and seizure if they’re wrong. The o my other time is when you have amassed a massive collection of firearms that are explicitly for “collection” purposes. Then they can OCCASIONALLY come to inspect your firearms. But this is why you never classify your registered firearms for collection purposes, but for hunting or sport shooting. Outside of those two circumstances, they do not have any rights to your property, and one should never speak to or invite police into their home.

My concern with most cable locks (and some trigger locks) is misplacing the key or figuring out which key to use. My advice is to get combination locks to ease the frustration. Just do not forget the combination sequence, otherwise you are going to spend a lot of time going through each possible combination.

There’s definitely a lot of truth in this. It’s why I only have a few cable locks, and all my firearms at the moment are non restricted. @@patrickandkennafenwick3958 While this may seem like a great idea at first, if someone gets their hands on your keys or you misplace them, that would allow someone to have access to all your firearms, or most of them at least. It’s definitely more convenient for you, but I have a different key for each of the 4 or 5 locks I use. If you would have more than that I totally understand it would get pretty tough to keep track of them all. In this case I’d use a coloured marker to colour code each key, or even just use some vinyl or a printed piece of paper with a number on it. Of course to each their own. But for me I couldn’t use the same key for each of my cable locks.

Wait a sec - did that change - I thought it was legal to store a pistol in a locked hard case (in addition to the trigger or cable lock), but you say “room or safe”. Does a locked hard case count as a “safe”? If I’m not mistaken, I have linked the RCMP page explaining this below. If you have a restricted firearm you can either keep it in a locked case or outside of a case (such as just on a shelf) as long as it’s inside a vault, safe or room designed to store firearms safely. In both cases you still need to have a locking device on the firearm itself.

You don't need to keep the action completely open when you have a cable lock in, thus, it doesn't really put any pressure at all on the springs. Even if it did, the trivial cost of replacing a spring is nothing compared to the cost you might pay if your firearm is misused. About the firearm being cocked, that's also not necessarily true. I can easily insert a cable lock into my Tavor, for instance, without ever cocking the action, nor without ever compressing the spring to its fully compressed position. I can see that this may not always be the case for ALL firearms. However, a cable lock, in my opinion at least, is a far better, safer option than a trigger lock. no one has a prohibited weapon If they do they're breaking the law

That's not correct. While due to the OIC in 2020 and subsequent C21 becoming law, a prohibited license is no longer available for new applicants, people DO still own prohibited firearms. Including those banned in the 70s, and those banned in 2020 for which the amnesty period is still active.

No cable locks for me. They can be defeated easily enough with decent pair of wire cutters.

The point of these devices isn’t ever meant to stop an intruder. Only to delay them. A simple wafer lock can easily be defeated on a trigger lock with minutes of practice. Or not at all if it’s not on properly. The idea is to not make firearms readily available to those not intended to use them :) But hey, whatever creams your Twinkie ;)

@@canadianoperator buy a proper gun safe, cheap cabinets are almost worthless imo. No need to worry about trigger locks vs cables. I would disagree that storing firearms without locks in a 400 lb vault thats bolted to a concrete floor is doing the bare minimum lol.

I would argue that a cable lock requires less effort to brake than a trigger lock.

The gun locks are to prevent un wanted hands getting into your guns like children or untrained . won't stop anybody determined.

Whether that’s technically right or not, the most important thing is that these are not locks. They delay and deter, but no lock is invaluable. Especially to someone experienced in the matter. So the idea is to slow someone down and prevent harm as opposed to completely prevent access to a firearm. Because if someone is determined enough they could do anything.

Not a fan of cable locks. I can cut them with Kline pliers, takes about 5 seconds.

No lock is infallible. An average skilled lock picker can defeat a standard wafer lock in that time. So, really, it doesn’t matter. It’s meant to delay someone, not to stop them.
