How to Store Your Games Without an Insert

Ashton shares his strategy behind getting your tabletop board game started and put away as quickly as possible. Nothing wrong with inserts, but there's tons of ways to store your components whether it be The Broken Token or fishing boxes.

Yep. I bought those tiny containers for Tiny Towns aswell because there storgae solution was to have one big plastic bag for all your bits lol

With the little Dollar Tree boxes, some stores might not carry those ones specifically anymore, but if they do it's usually 10 boxes for $1. If the store doesn't have them in the snack/food aisle, they have slightly different boxes in the craft section, 4 for $1, that are a little bit bigger and come with colored lids in a few different colors. Best places to go for the tackle boxes are dedicated sporting goods stores like Dick's, Academy Sports and Bass Pro Shop. They have a much larger selection when it comes to size and configuration. Walmart will at least have a few different options.

Dollar Tree art organizers for pieces and Walmart crayon boxes for cards. Works great. They close securely and stack.

@@Shelfside The organizers from Dollar Tree have the added bonus of a removeable lid that also latches securely. Most containers with a hinged lid you can't remove and setting it on the table during play is awkward. Both of those items are just a dollar, too.

For me it's either a 3d printed insert that you can actually use during play, or death. No compromise, and certainly no dollar boxes.

Hell yeah, I learned CAD just to try making my ideal Blood Rage insert, I plan on putting all player related stuff in one place, so stuff like the minis, board, markers, etc. So in this way, I could just give each player a box and they could help me unpack and pack things away, should make setup muuch quicker

I don't particularly have any problem with the out-of-the-box Game of Thrones box. but ... in general the PITA is most often that the provided insert can't hold sleeved cards. Btw... that's a problem for Takenoko too.

ugh, yeah inserts that don't hold sleeved cards are the worst, my takenoko cards are getting grimier by the playthrough. The coffin style of FFG games does definitely work for some games, but I often times find myself throwing the cardboard insert out for the method mentioned in the vid -Ashton

I used to organize all of my game pieces in medicine holders, but then one day my dad ate all of my game pieces and I screamed so loudly I shattered all the windows of the house

Kinda similar to my dad, I just used the beer bottles in the fridge to store my game pieces. Ant way long story short, he is now dead.

That's a lot of measuring activity, right? Or educated guesses...Not all plano boxes fit in the board game box and not all compartments would fit components. Cards are probably the biggest bummer especially when manufacturers don't consider sleeves when providing inserts. Makes you appreciate the extra effort for other board games that gives enough space for the components: Seasons and Shadows Over Camelot come to mind.

can't speak for balder's gate, but for the classic betrayal, I just used plastic baggies to separate all of the monsters from the board tokens. Then there's plastic baggies for the player clips as well. -Ashton
