Inflatable paddleboards are pretty hard wearing, and shouldn't require much maintenance. However, to ensure your iSUP is in good working order when you do use it, it's well worth thinking how best to store it, especially over longer periods of time.
Whether you’re living somewhere hot or somewhere cold, storing your iSUP badly can effect not only it’s overall condition but also its performance on the water. In this video we go over the basics of iSUP storage to make sure your iSUP is in top condition when it comes to getting back out on the water again. Whether you’re storing it for a few weeks, months or longer, it’s well worth thinking about. If you don’t you’ll regret it!
Other things worth considering;
- Rodents (Mice & Rats) We haven’t experienced any storage problems re;rodents. But if you suspect any rodents nearby take the necessary intervention and keep a close eye on your SUP! You may find your wetsuits are more likely to get a nibble first!
- Birds and more importantly their poo! If you get bird poo on your iSUP try and clean it off asap. The main PVC board material washes quite well, but the EVA deck pad can stain easily and be much harder to clean.
Let us know if you have any other experiences with storing your iSUP good or bad in the comment section below, we would love to know.

excellent advice, here in Greece we don't get long winters (especially in the south we barely get any snow anymore) but we do get hot summers and I've seen burst iSUPs from people that put them in a garage on Sunday at full pressure wanting to use them again next Saturday without wasting time inflating them.

Great video. Very useful tips. I wish I knew this 3 years ago. I live in the tropics, where its 30+°C on average all year round, and I find the constant heat can diminish boards quicker than normal. Even if stored properly. The D-rings and fins peeled off my Red Paddle boards after a year. Anyway, I'll put your valuable guidance to use. Thank you!

Thanks for your insights into storing boards in warmer weather. Sounds like the glue has been heated up too much and is coming apart. We will keep this in mind too. Thanks, Beau

Exactly the same thing happened to me with a Red Paddle board stored rolled up in its bag for about 5 years in my bedroom in Brazil. No AC so it's a pretty hot place. I blew it up recently to 17 psi which is quite a bit below what it should be able to take. I walked down to the beach with it and put it down on the sand. I noticed one of the D rings had fallen off. I leaned on the board to restring the bungee chord and suddenly the board exploded, the front seam splitting apart. As I was rolling it up again, I noticed the fins were just hanging off. So I pulled them off before I lost them. Red says this happens in hot, humid climates. I don't know whether it's worth trying to fix the seam because it may just happen again in some other place? I'm wondering if there may be other boards with glue that can stand up to hot, humid condition?

Sorry to hear that @MikeBrown. I live in Samoa which I'm guessing is similar in climate to Brazil. I stored my boards in their bags in a dry room away from the sun but they didn't get much use over the covid period. Unfortunately, a couple months back I inflated four boards to about 10psi, left them over night to find them all burst the next morning. They are about 5 years old but used very little. I don't think it's worth fixing them as I think they will burst elsewhere along the seam. My hardboards are still going strong. So my dilemma is do I reinvest in inflatables or buy hard boards ???🤔

@@tokyoobro Some years back the fins started coming off another Red Paddle Co board. I contacted Red and eventually they sent me another new board. Then they said the glue should hold no matter what conditions the board is stored in. Now they are saying that hot humid climates break down the glues. They only suggested I reglue the broken seam. But like you, I think the glue may come undone in another place. So probably it isn't worth fixing. You could try contacting Red too and see what happens. I also have another hard board which is still fine after 5 years with only a very minor repair. I've been checking into Starboard inflatables which have something called welded rail technology implying the rails are heat fused on rather than glued. These might be an option. I remember that one of their inflatable boards could be paddled, surfed and even windsurfed which sounds great to me.

@@MikeBrown-dk7or The same thing happen to me, and other people I'm sure, with fins and D-rings peeling off. I worked out then that the heat would've had some part to play with glue degradation. I never contacted Red Paddle as the boards were out of warranty and I assumed that it would've cost a lot to cover delivery, customs and other taxes to send boards to Samoa. I had 6 of them. The rail weld technology offered by Starboard looks promising but I think I've gone off inflatable boards right now. Still considering other options....

Great video. If storing outside, inflated, is it better to keep it in a bag or just as is?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 2 жыл бұрын
If storing outside inflated, we'd recommend to deflate it and store inside a bag out of the sun. The temperature changes will change the pressure inside and weaken the seams when inflated. But if it's deflated outside and away from the sun, this will be ok. Hope this helps. Beau

If I keep my isup deflate, put it horizontal or vertical , which one is better? And roll or fold?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 2 жыл бұрын
Great question Lawrence! We would loosely roll it up and store either way. Probably best vertical so you don't squash it or store other things on top. Hope that helps. Beau

I keep mine inflated on top of my closet at winter, not that much pressure but stiff and it fits there. Would you say that's a good idea or should i de-inflate it?
@zefe3886
@zefe3886 2 жыл бұрын
That is fine actually. I store mine inflated at 1psi and it has been serving for 5yrs. Plus you can use 303 uv protectant for vinyl for extra protection against the UV light from the sun. Spray and wipe it once every 6 months or once a yr depending on your usage.
@SUPboardermag

So long as you have released some pressure, it is a fine way to store your board. For long periods, we recommend deflating it, but it's up to you. Hope that helps. Beau

Hey i wanted to ask you if you should keep my deflated paddle board rolled up and "standing" or should I put it on the side. I. Worried there will be too much pressure if i leave if standing for 6 months

Haven't got much space, so for the Winter, I have deflated mine, folded it as loosely as I can so that it fits inside the bag and kept the bag slightly opened for some air and put it into the boot of my car in the garage. Any thoughts on whether this is good or bad idea ?
