If you don't have a fancy webbing stretcher then this simple method can be applied to stretch webbing with a monkey wrench. This tip found in a 1937 Popular Mechanic magazine on the Internet.

Thank you for showing this. Those stretchers are so expensive. Quite ingenious!

Glad to see someone else who likes to do things 'the old fashioned way' without having to buy a plethora of expensive tools/things (you'll never use again) that kinda destroy the DIY factor, cost wise ! (; >( Thanks for your video. Keep'm coming......

Hey, I'm just jealous that I don't have those tool. I ordered one from eBay and it was $16 and free S & H. Not a bad deal and I still have five fingers on each hand that I'd probably loose if I tried to make it with my tools. Glad you read it as it was intended, just yanking your chain.

Kia ora Stephen and kia mihi for that _pipe wrench_ suggestion; nice bit of lateral thinking there. 👍 Kia kaha during these trying times.

He’s using a monkey wrench because it has a straight jaw. A pipe wrench has a curved jaw (for use on a curved pipe). A pipe wrench wouldn’t be very good in this particular situation. 👍🏻

Thank you sir! I like the way you think! I'm planning on re-padding our dining chairs and was thinking of cutting a window out of 1/2" plywood and attaching webbing, after which I would pad and cover. Seems like most of the people putting webbing on dining chairs use a wood frame. Any thoughts?

Once you get the old seat stripped you will see how it was originally done. If it didn't have webbing but just a board insert then you can make the wooden frame you suggested. If it did already have webbing, just remove and replace on what you have. Not sure if plywood is ideal if making a frame, but worth trying. Check out this video for an approach to webbing the wooden frame. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqPQe2efhKx7lbM

What kind of stapler are you using? Mine is so loud and rarely drives the staples all the way in. I always have to finish pounding them in with a hammer. I love how quiet yours is and it sunk the staples in like a toothpick through butter. Very nice.

It is just a reatively cheap stapler by RAPID that I got from Bunnings (Australian company in New Zealand). I think I paid no more than about $29 for it, as didn't really want to spend too much for a one off job. I have used it since and found I've had the same issue of having to hammer stapples in the final bit, as I think it depends what wood you are stappling into rather than the stapler itself. I got given a really expensive stapler since, but it only takes really long staples, so is no good for this sort of thing. Shame as it is electric and really makes it easy to stapple, but it takes 606 stapples, and the shortest I've found are 15mm; way too long. Good luck.

Came to the comments to say the same thing! I dread using my loud staple gun. I wear earplugs. Wish I had one like this (but I also wonder if I would have the hand strength to use it as I have arthritis in both hands).

Handy vid, do you know how much stretch your webbing had?

Just enough for it to ping when flicked. You can get quite a bit of taughtness using this technique.

I bought a simple stapler for a first project. Dining chair webbing. The staples are not going into the wood. I don’t want to spend a lot of money for a stapler I may only use once. Any idea why my staples don’t go into the wood?
@IwantanEOS5
@IwantanEOS5 2 жыл бұрын
This is likely a problem with the hardness of the wood you are stapling into. Try it on some pine and see if they go in all the way on that. Pine should be reasonably okay to take the whole staple. Chairs are often made with hardwoods like oak, maple, cherry, and hickory, all being harder than pine, and some much harder and therefore more problematic for stapling. If the stapler does not work on pine I'd say it is useless and you should ask for your money back. If you said you were buying it for furniture when making your purchase and they didn't advise you otherwise, then you can argue it is not fit for purpose.

@@IwantanEOS5 Stephen's right. Like you, I had a basic upholstery stapler, and it's simply not up to hardwoods like oak or mahogany unfort. Also, once you get a powered one, you find yourself wanting to use it on so many projects! 😆 I have a basic Ryobi 'Compression Drive' stapler. It uses vacuum technology, meaning you don't need to buy a separate compressor like the pro upholsterers use. I think Ryobi has their 12 days of Tools promo on around this time in several countries, so you may grab a bargain! Best of luck! 🤗

Oh, poor Rose, and I thought I was a tight wad! Is he so stingy that he won't even spring for a compressor for an electric stapler? Hey, Buddy, let me explain about arthritis and how it's going to affect your hands somewhere down the road. Let go of some coins and do yourself a favor, get some other way of doing this and save those hands.

Hi Alice, not stingy, this job was a one-off so my money is better spent on my family than on pointless gear for myself. This tip was never intended for people that do this on mass.

What a crappy comment for an awesome little video, not everyone needs/can afford a compresser staple gun and I'm sure he understands about RSI and arthritis. Just be nice why don't you?!

Yikes. With a tongue like that, you don't need a staple gun.
