Hi if you're reading this, I just restrung my first electric guitar, and I have some lessons for ya: 1. make sure you dont do more than 3 winds around the post, I found out that my high E breaks after 3 :/ 2. MAKE SURE TO STRETCH YOUR STRINGS! 3. make sure it's a bit loose when you enter the string through the post, you dont want it to be very tight, you want to be able to stretch the string upwards, if it's tight and you try to tune it it will split. 4. you can do it, it's not impossible I promise c: Edit: I have a stratocaster, and I used 10 gauge d'addario strings

Agreed on point 1, I’m trying to string a high E with 11 gauge and it seems to come out of place after around 3 windings. Also, is there any kind of knot I have to make with the string or is it just held in place by the windings?

Can't thank you enough for this video. When I asked my guitar-playing friend how to fix my broken strings, he made it sound like it was some big ordeal. This made it doable in less than half an hour (all 6 strings). One thing that 'might' be worth mentioning, some guitars (like mine, apparently) have those holes through which you thread the string in the back of the body, not on the front like in the video. Either way, this was greatly helpful, thank you!

Lately I have been having a issue with my strings not lasting as long as they should and a guy at my local guitar center told me that it could be the way im stringing my guitar. So I found this video and so far these are the longest lasting strings that I have had. So I needed to spent the time to come back and thank this video. Helped out a ton

I have always done it the way shown in this video, but I have recently seen people suggesting a better way would be to make a loop to secure the string to itself around the post. It's supposed to keep it more secure, and make it less likely to come out of tune

I don't know if anybody else mentioned it, but a general rule of thumb for how much slack you would need is you would measure to the next tuning peg. that should be enough to make enough revolutions around the head of the peg that you're running the string through to not have too much wrapped around the peg (which looks hideous 🤣) or too little to keep it tightly wound.
@Terryboy400
@Terryboy400 10 жыл бұрын
I watched this because I could never wind the string round the machine heads very well, and I tried to restring my electric a few days before I watched this, I tried winding the string round the machine head by hand, as soon as i get my new chrome bridge pins for my acoustic because one of the regular ones snapped in the bridge when i intended to change the strings on that (which you can get out by putting your hand in the sound hole, feeling around the bridge for the pin then when you have found it push it up and it'll just pop out) I will try the method he has shown for my acoustic in the wrapping around the machine heads. Also he says about leaving some string because that's what wraps around the machine head, if you don't know how much to leave put your little finger up to your finger near the thumb facing upwards, rest the new string on that then pull it through the machine head and that is a good amount of string to leave to wrap around the machine head. One last thing is that I've seen a comment saying getting the string off the way he had done damages the finish, i don't know if that is true but if you're scared that it is then another way to get them off is to loosen the string so it has no note to it anymore, and is considerably loose, then cut the string with your tool to cut strings at the twelfth fret, then getting the string out from both ends, some guitars have the string come out the bottom of the guitar like mine, or through the bridge. I'm not sure on this because it is an assumption but I've saw that people have not known how to get the string out the bottom end, if the strings do not come out either ways i have mentioned then there will probably be a part off the bottom to unscrew around the bridge area, or a back off the bridge to unscrew but make sure if you unscrew near the bridge that you don't adjust the bridge height. This is as far as i know as i am only a 15 year old guitarist. A few days ago when I was changing the strings on my electric i made a mistake on the low E string and tuned it an octave too high and it snapped meaning i had to buy a new string, so be careful of that. I used Ernie ball, gauge nines which are perfectly good strings so if strings have snapped you just need practice. Incase your a beginning guitarist and don't know what machine heads are they are also called pegs; the part of the guitar the strings are wound through. Hope this helps some people

What you are calling the 'bridge' is not the bridge, it's the 'stop-tailpiece; it's job is to anchor the strings. The 'bridge' supports the the string-saddles, and it's the item closest to the Pickup!

Only issue I have is which way to wind the string, I think you go above the original positioning then every one after that goes under the original positioning and he even says that, but in the video continues winding above. Any help?

This comment is for a technical communication course I am currently taking. This comment is purely for educational reasons. I do not expect nor need a reply or fix from this. April 1, 2021 KZbin user “fordummies” Dear fordummies, Your video on how to restring an electric guitar was very informative and easy to follow along with. Since learning to play guitar, I have had some rather annoying times with switching old strings out for new ones, especially with my electric guitar. Your guide to doing that made it much simpler to follow along with and properly restring my guitars with ease. There were, however, a few notes I had for your video throughout my viewing of it, which I have separated into sections below for you. Content As far as the overall content of the video, I found it to be very informative, although a use of jargon was in your video quite a noticeable amount throughout the entirety of the video, such as the use of the term "post" when referring to the part of the guitar that the bare end of the string slides through to begin tuning. If you have less-informed viewers watching this video, they might be confused when you mention the post, so a quick point-out or explanation of what you're referring to could be much more useful to your less knowledgeable viewers. Also, I noticed a few instances where the camera zoomed in too far when you were showing certain parts, such as when you brought the string through the post and explained to leave a bit of slack for the string, it was hard to get a good view of about how much slack should be left on the string before you begin to tighten it through the post. I would suggest have the camera not be zoomed in so much so viewers can see better what is going on behind your hands with the string: about how much slack you’re leaving and where you’re putting tension on the string while tightening it through the post. This would make it easier for users to get a good idea of how much slack they should leave while restringing their own guitar so they don’t pull it too tight or too loose. Organization The overall organization of the video was very well choreographed, yet I can’t help but feel like a minor step that could be rather important is missing. This step would be the very first thing you go over when bringing out the new string to replace the old one: how to properly unwind a guitar string to not form any bends or kinks in the string to get the right tone and tightness when tuning. Many a times have I brought a new string out of the package and tried to unwind it by hand, only to get it even more coiled up or cause a slight bend in the string that’s very noticeable when trying to play. My suggestion would be to show a step before pulling the string through the bridge of you unwinding the string the proper way: by grabbing the bare end and letting gravity take care of pulling everything apart in a seamless effort. This way, viewers can be sure not to form any kinks in the string, and it keeps with the overall organization of the paper, following the same chronological order you have laid out in your video of how to restring an electric guitar. Style I believe the overall style of the video was very straightforward and easy to follow along with. My biggest suggestion would be to make sure you aren’t using too many terms that not all viewers would understand as to avoid a sense of being lost or confused. This way, viewers of all ages and experience levels could follow along with ease and have a better time when it comes to needing to change their own guitar strings. Delivery Personally, I felt as though your delivery of the entire set of instructions was great, the biggest flaw I noticed throughout was mainly just the lighting of the room you were changing the strings in. The room was well-lit, a little too well-lit, and there were times when you would be zoomed in on the guitar super close or panned out and it was hard to tell what you were putting tension on, what you meant by “windings” as not many people who are new to guitar playing would completely understand right away. My suggestion would be to film in a smaller room with a dimmer light setting in order to be able to fully capture every twist, pull, and turn you make when restringing the guitar so that all of your viewers would be able to see exactly what is taking place.

Really helped. Also one tip, instead of using wire cutters, if you pull the excess string around, you create friction and heat so the end will come off. This leaves a clean end of the string on the post, without any sharp edges. It works on the 3 thicker strings at least for me :)

i would just like to say in my own opinion: you shouldnt add "dummies" to the name. i know its giving a meaning as in for people who dont understand but its still not right. Nobody is dumb and nobody is smart, stop labeling people as for instence if someone called you stupid you would be a little upset but if someone called you smart you would be proud. Is smart the #1 label you wanna go by? I think not. As I should say again, This is MY OWN opinion.

Here's the thing Bear, The term "for dummies" is associated with those yellow books. It's been around for so long, that using it lets people know exactly what kind of video they are gonna find. Even beginner videos might assume you know the basic things. "For dummies" means it is the most basic, beginner video possible. I'm not sure why you would come here just to find something that offends you.

i wanted to add that when you get to the G-B-E on the gibson style headstock you need to loop the string under to the left. i just watched a video and the thick strings E A D you bend and loop to the right...GBE loop to left i hope this helps any confusion ive read here about guys breaking strings.this is a great video but the gentleman gives the impression that every loop & bend is to the right..only on fender style headstocks are the bend/loops all to the right.
