Just as an FYI for you.....In Type MC Cable the Anti-Short Bushings are not required per Section 330.40 of the National Electrical Code. If you were doing Type AC Cable then the Anti-Shorts would be required. However, they are always optional to be used ...just don't confuse them with being a NEC code requirement on Type MC Cable. Also It is highly suggested that you remove the polymeric protective wrap prior to installing the connector to ensure the bonding of the cable to the connector is in accordance with the manufacturers original product evaluation which was not done with the poly wrap under the fitting reducing the surface contact area by up to 25 %. Just some thoughts and glad to see the use of the Roto Tool versus hack saws and so on...Nice Job.

Encore Codes- Codes and Standards Are you an electrician? Local/city codes supersede the National Electric Code, and most places require Anti-shorts on both MC/AC Cable. I know if you're caught not using them you will fail in Austin, TX even if you used black tape. If you use no type of Anti-Short you will short out and ruin the cable. I've seen it happen more than once. You're mistaken by saying that you should remove the plastic wrap because the cable will ground to the connector on the other side of the set screw. I've taken classes on just how to strip this cable, and what I've shown is the proper way.

I am a Master Electrician and if that is the case in your locality then I would suggest making that statement. You can also listen to my recordings at www.masterthenec.com as well as I have a radio broadcast on Understanding Type MC Cable. If a locality went above and beyond the minimum standard to require anti-short bushings for Type MC Cable then it shows me they have no clue as to the intent of the bushings to begin with. I would encourage them to read UL 1569 for clarification.

Straight from the Southwire MC spec sheet - 'Anti-short bushings are not required for use with MC cable per the NEC and UL' The throat of the MC connector protects the wire from the cut end of the MC. This is 100% correct. This is also covered in a NEMA bulletin for those interested (NEMA engineering bulletin 90). With that said, every municipality does hold the right to go above and beyond NEC codes and any electrician, engineer, or good DIY should be aware of their local codes.

thewibb completely correct. Many electricians say they are required because no one is going to fail an inspection with them installed but they are not required by the national code for MC.

Informative video. I had never seen or used the device and looks like it works well. The few times that I had worked with armoured cable, I used a hacksaw. FYI....... The tab on the plastic bushing (anti-short) should protrude through the connector for easy inspection/verification. Thanks for sharing.

In your description you say that aluminum is AC, but that isn't true. They make both aluminum and steel MC. AC cable has a thin bare bonding wire that makes contact with the armor. Both versions in your video are Type MC. That tool is called Roto-Split. A roto zip is for cutting holes in drywall.

Very informative, and interesting to see how the NEC differs quite a bit from the CEC here in canada. very few times have i run in to "local differences" in the code. Some more major city centres have a separate inspection branch which sounds similar to your local codes superceding the NEC. Thank you for sharing. in which applications would you use MC over AC? All we really use up here is AC for commercial applications.

I'm almost done rewiring most of my house with MC (always using the anti-shorts) and am so glad to have purchased the roto-flex. I found some forum discussions where guys were insisting you have to "square up" the end of the cable by trimming the last turn of the spiral using dikes and now I'm worried I just did my entire project wrong. Having to fiddle with the cable using dikes seems to defeat the whole purpose of using a roto-flex though. I noticed you just use the cut end as-is regardless of which end of the cable you cut. Is the partial cut through the second turn of the armor a problem? Am I worrying about a non-problem?

how or can you connect it to conduit like pvc going outside? I want to connect in my garage then to go outside and run a couple feet to ceiling of carport(outside of garage)
@aeonicsoulx5 жыл бұрын
Brad S for outside they have liquid tight which is flexible conduit you can strip your wire and run through. To switch to EMT or hard pipe conduit there are flex to emt connecters. Homedepot can show you. Just use liquid tight outside.

Greenfield 1 inch squeeze connectors are not reliable for upside down connections on 1 inch mc cable such as 1/0 3wire MC
@confidentlocal86006 жыл бұрын
This is a good point. I'm installing a subpanel with 4/3 MC cable (1" OD) as the feeder as part of a near total rewire. I can't find ANY connectors to terminate it to the subpanel. The closest fit I can find are 3/4" trade size squeeze connectors. They hold of you snug all the way down, but you can twist the cable counterclockwise out of the connector. The snap-in-box style with the red insulated throat won't accommodate the wires!
@leoshiflett9918 жыл бұрын
Please please do not isolate the metal cable jacket from the connector and box by folding the plastic over the anti short bushing you are defeating your path to ground
@S33Electrical8 жыл бұрын
The MC cable sheath is firmly clamped at every other point on the connector. The metal sheathing does not qualify as a reliable ground source. Article 330.
