When IGAB came out, I remember reading that this song has just been hiding in SM’s vault for years and they didn’t release it yet because they wanted the girls to be ready. I think Zimzalabim has also been hiding in SM’s vault until RV released it. Point is, SM I think makes sure that when they release these experimental songs, it’s well-polished and would fit the group. This is probably why the experimental concept works for their artists.

Shinee has already talked about the music library they have and how certain songs sit there for a long time, and since we know that it's really interesting how NCT's Superhuman sounds as if it was intended to be a Shinee song when it was originally written - while Don't Call Me could easily be an NCT song. Even if that's not true and they were created for their groups specifically in reality, you can't tell me Superhuman & Don't Call Me couldn't easily be interchanged between the groups.

Speaking of Bo Rhap effect, I Got A Boy by SNSD is by far one of my favorite kpop songs of all time, soecifically for this reason, and I also believe it is one of the best kpop songs ever composed. One reason that it's so well composed is because of the TRANSITIONS from one section to another. Too many experimental songs in kpop are just straight-up bastardizations of music. They just throw the different sections together and hope people are intrigued enough to keep listening. But IGAB not only slows down or speeds up the drums before a change, it also has *the members themselves* ANNOUNCE the tempo change as part of the chorus! Brilliance!

Yes! It threw me off so much when I first listened to it, but I grew to love the sudden changes and section overlaps in the song lol
@blairwrelos18912 жыл бұрын
And the thing is musically there was something that connected each section with the rest of the song. And vocal melody wise they stayed in the same scale throughout the song which also helped with the section,beat and style changes. It was basically one song sung in edm, rnb, rock etc. versions

EXACTLY!!! Too many “experimental” songs nowadays just straight up mash things tgt without effort to glue them - be it thru instrumentals or vocals (which I Got a Boy both used) It’s also why ppl hated O.O cuz there were no transitions at all. The producers even gave an instrumental break to perhaps allow the group to “announce” a beat change like SNSD did but instead someone else (or maybe JYP) decided it’s not necessary and ignore that golden opportunity And the fact that I Got a Boy’s different sections can come tgt at the end shows that music theory wise, those different parts actually have underlying similarities whether thru the scales used or the vocal onomatopoeias~~~ experimental songs nowadays cant even do that - the only one that even comes close is Yeppi Yeppi (which doesn’t even feature an ending w all sections tgt but was glued tgt very well)

I actually feel like Sm are the best in doing experimental music that you love or hate. It throws you off, it's really weird, makes you lost for the first time you hear it, but it's so fucking cool too, if you like it you'll become addicted really quickly. While Big Hit doesn't really make experimental music, their music is really comfortable and pleasant to listen to, so even Shadow and Eternally don't exactly throw you off. Basically, SM keeps on experimenting on their artists' songs lately like putting another song in a song and having different genres especially in bridges. Other examples to this are EXO's MAMA (Rock Bridge), Tempo (rap verses, main bridge and Acapella bridge), and Obsession (RNB bridges never fail to amaze me), SUJU's Mr Simple (Dance Break after 2nd chorus, rap bridge then another singing bridge). It's really difficult to explain in details because there are lots of things going on with their songs haha. Nonetheless, I think SM is the most experimental company in songs. It doesn't have that one style or identity, but it gives off that "SM" trademark in their songs once you listened to it. Great video. I like the analysis.

it's actually more like the chorus is in 3/4 but the shift is in 6/8, with the 8th note being the same tempo throughout. it's a signature change, not an actual tempo change. it just feels that way because of the subdivision in the drums.

I think the biggest issue with the Nmixx song is that it doesn’t have a cohesive theme. Like all the other songs might have different tempos and keys, but it’s thematically the same song and there’s just enough pattern to make it work and for a listener to recognise it as part of the same work. Nmixx’s song is like opening a novel only to find that 40 pages in the middle are from a different book. Like musically the story doesn’t make sense idk but with enough listening you can make yourself anticipate the change and not hate it lol

yeah but it was meant to make everyone hate it. As much as we all hate jype, they aren't stupid. They know how to make DEBUTS. Ones that are iconic and everyone talks about. This one is no different. Yeah maybe it was talked about for not a good reason, but nobody liked the song enough to even try to BEGIN to understand why it was this way. The whole song basically says the song was a teaser for what's to come more from them, and after their first comeback everyone is going to say "omg why wasn't this their debut" and stan them. That's pure marketing strategy right there.. good on them... nmixx is so talented, don't give up on them yet

Also i just realized that in the beginning of igab, the lyrics are talking about what the other girls are thinking about her, but then when the tempo changes and “chorus 2” happens, the lyrics switch to the girls perspective and what she thinks about the guy she is dating. And when tiffany does her bridge at 14:06, the tempo slows down and talks about how the she is angry and upset at the guy, then reverting back to the previous beat and talking about how great he is. Damn this song is genius with its lyrics AND design. I really recommend listening to this and reading the lyrics because im so bad at explaining.

Correct me if I'm wrong but...IGAB has a similar more structure to some theatre musicals than pop songs. If you break it down into sung lines by characters/members within GG instead of structure of verse-prechorus-chorus then added the synthesis of the grand ending wherein they sing their components on top of one another...the structure reminds me of "One Day" in Le Miserables
@1903n2 жыл бұрын
Interesting since the lyrics itself is like a conversation between a girl and her girlfriends. The first verse is like a conversation between girls and into the second verse till the end, it’s the girl who got the boy’s (lol) POV. And even through the girl’s POV it’s a story of how she fell in love with everything, then the first bridge (taeny) is like her getting mad at the boy then sica’s bridge is acknowledging that there will be fights and stuff in relationships and they’re gonna make it through. It’s a whole story

If you really think about it F(x) songs where always different but also held back by a time where k-pop fans loved the same concepts over and over and it never really changed from that. I always loved f(x)'s discography cause it was different from everyone elses and maybe that's why aespa caught my eye right away since they have a really similar sound but more modern and futuristic.

I loved this video, so educational. With your explanation I think I kinda understood why I felt like O.O wasn't working for me despite liking other songs with dramatic sound changes such as Eternally (one of my faves by TXT). When I first heard Eternally I was amazed like "wow, so clever", but O.O left me kind of "wtf?" Maybe it's because while Eternally is still cohesive somehow, O.O does feel like two separate songs. I know the effect is purposeful, but for me it feels like they failed to make them work together and it's like a mashup of two snippets. I know they searched for that kind of shock response but it loses the satisfaction of hearing the song to me, specially since Lily's high note in the bridge it's kinda interrupted abruptly by the chorus going back and that annoys me somehow I can't explain. But I agree some of it was cool, specially the beginning, I actually liked that feeling of the song going "darker" just before the verse starts, and definitely the "superhero" part has so much potential as well. I actually liked the fan remixes for that reason.

I’m so glad you spoke about the YG party chorus every group gets. Everyone has probably overheard them, and lots of them even feel it is unnecessary in some songs but YG does that the best. There is no tension made most of the time, the bridge only consists of heavenly vocals BUT you get the tension when you’re listening to the dance break or the end. I love their structure personally and for songs like Killing me (ikon) and Soso (winner) I am shocked as to how they make such gloomy sounding songs escalate to so much thrill. No change in the mood of the lyrics, there’s only change in ours. Another key changing song I’d like to recommend is Orange by treasure, they changed the key so well with the high note sung by Jeongwoo and the fact that Asahi wrote and composed this song makes it even better. Lastly hats off to you for having the patience editing this masterpiece omg I respect this sm

writing this cause i wanna be a songwriter *classic structure:* verse prechorus chorus verse (usually halftime beat for rap) prechorus chorus bridge high note chorus a little different *I've noticed:* - first 2 chorus are quite identical and kinda full - last one more "silent" and "calm" without percussion instruments *yg:* - first 2 chorus are quite identical (with halftime beat and kinda feels empty) - last one with disco party chorus with more accessible choreo for fans like me.. (tho i still find them difficult but let's move on...) and minimal lyrics to complement the dance break *eleven & aya did this:* - slow down the beat before chorus (bonus points if it's slowed down before the disco party chorus after the bridge like omagashhh) *another way to add flair to the song:* - key change at the last chorus (i line this one sm but sometimes it gets confusing to hit the right key while singing😭 as a singing coverist it really gets on my nerves. tho when it's done properly it's 💣. BONUS POINTS IF IT FOLLOWS THE HIGH NOTE AT THE END OF THE BRIDGEE) - vibe change (for example in zimzalabimzim, from a bubbly prechorus they do a jump scare to the chorus where they even change key... an octave lower) - silent bridge... without percussion instruments or even just acapella or with only piano and some reverb in it which is then followed by a random disco party chorus or dance break out of the blue!! like omggg - the emotional change like in eternally by txt where from angelic they jump to demonic and as if nothing happened the chorus is angelic again... WUT?!?!?!??! and then it doesn't stop there.. (you wishhh) txt won't decide and it goes to demonic again BUTTT (it ain't stopping here either... you were wrong hehe. the boys are confused about which concept to pick) it turns back again to angelic... no better... HEAVENLY!! (wth i like this so much) - tempo change... very experimental THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEOO OMG NOW I'VE GOT IDEAS IN MY HEADDD i swear if my career doesn't take off... 🙂 hahahaha

What I personally think works very well about Zimzalabim is how the throbbing bass in the dance break actually underpins a lot of the rest of the song but it's less noticeable in the bright verses due to the low pass filter. It really helps bring the structure of the song together.
