Wise advice, applicable to many areas of life - not just in art. I was fortunate in finding my compass from artists whose paintings I saw in the museum, great artists (like the Impressionists, who were my first love) and I was not jealous of them, nor intimidated either, strangely. I could not do what they did, but the beauty of their painting made me want to learn and loving what I saw in their painting gave me energy because I wanted that vision so badly. I had some beginner's luck and I fell flat many times. When my skills sank, that love for what I knew was at least possible in art would bring me back. I was also lucky in not seeing how bad some of my early paintings were and a bit of blindness to the faults protected me somewhat from becoming discouraged. I just loved painting so much and wanted to see like those great artists saw life. Whenever I did get discouraged, love would bring me back.
