Techwear cargo pants have a reputation for being difficult to wear - in my opinion you don't have to treat them any differently to any other piece of clothing. But since cargo trousers made it into work clothing, everything but "advanced" somewhat looks like "normal" functional wear, work clothing or rain cloathing nowadays, unless you add a piece that screams "military", has futuristic colorgradients, embedded EL-Wires or RGB-Lights, to remind someone of the reference to dystopian SciFi films, Games or Anime. But since I'm not concerned with "looking techWear style-like" I'm just thankful for this style, that it made it possible that I can nowadays buy regular functional wear, that doesn't have the color palette of childrens rain cloathing, but instead looks like a regular rain jacket and has the functionality that was a few years ago only found in outdoor expedition gear.

Since normal functional wear and work clothing adapts more and more elements and ideas from techwear and military gear, I wonder, how do you guys try to communicate it as a consciously choosen aesthetic, without adding military gear, futuristic colorgradients, EL-Wire or RGB-Lights? Since I'm more interested in the functionality than being stylish, I'm happy about this current trend.

I see techwear all over the streetwear scene now. The key to not looking like a cosplayer is to mix and match with trends already in place or incorporate it into your already existing wardrobe. Dont change who you are, just add a bit of functional flair to it. I like to pair a streetwear drop shoulder tee with a pair of technical cargos and a pair of vans or sneakers (for example). It's a classic look that always comes out great.

When I just got into techwear I remember seeing stuff on the techwear sub saying “what’s technical about this outfit? Or “you should add in *very popular piece that everyone on the sub is wearing” And it really made me think the peak of techwear is looking like everyone else. I’m starting to expand my style and try to find things that work best for me and I’m realizing that I can find things that I personally like and make them work. Really appreciate you covering this!

It's all about finding pieces you like, that you think look good on you, trying new things is paramount, or the style will die. I usually mix things up, Hamcus is a brand I recently started wearing, their dystopian aesthetic fits perfectly with most of the 'techwear' items I own, for mixing military looks to pair woth 'techwear', I have a large collection of Maharishi that also just works so well. There are a ton of ways you can style yourself, still be that cool future techwear vibe, and also be yourself. I was one of those dudes on r/techwearclothing that was slated for 'cotton? that's not technical!!!' ~ and I stand by those fits.

on the topic of non-techwear brands doing techwear, the Everlane ReNew Storm jacket that is unfortunately not made anymore has been one of the best pickups I made in that regard. The cut is unique and it even has armpit vents. The material is such that it will not wrinkle and it will keep a straight matte texture no matter what. Highly recommend if you can find it secondhand for anyone who wants a great looking budget techwear jacket.

I'm very much a fan of the vintage pieces and recontextualizing pieces that are explicitly marketed towards a different kind of demographic. I feel like it's something you can really put into that post-apocalyptic cyberpunk future aesthetic. Things like aggressively branded clothing from Racing, Esport, and the like with brands like AT&T, Pfizer, and other kinds of consumerism brands that is overtly advertisements, put in this framing of like rebellion being both subversive and actively sponsored by those brands.

Being a large-framed dude I'm concerned about straying too close to 'warcore' or whatever it's called. I don't want to be aesthetically associated with those military cosplay/white supremacists we all watched storm the US Capitol. I do however like the punk aesthetic and have been wearing Doc Martins since I was a teen but never got much deeper into the whole punk thing. I've been wearing Gore-Tex coats since the '90's and military surplus gear since I left the army in the early 2000's but the military stuff is mostly just stuff I didn't need to return. I've always liked the practicality and comfort of cargo pants and only in the past few years moved away from them in favour of jeans but I recently stumbled across some black "Built-in Flex Modern Joggers" from Old Navy that were very affordable and have a very techwear vibe to them so cargo pants are now back in my wardrobe. The problem is that I also like wearing Doc Martins but when I combine black cargo pants with Docs I tend to feel like I'm straying too close to those warcore/tacticool/racist types. I'm thinking colour may help break that impression but most of the stuff I have are muted tones. How does one avoid looking too warcore while still remaining techwear/cyberpunk? I want to look good and be comfortable but not threatening. I'm a big bearded dude and if I dress too aggressively I feel like people might get uncomfortable.

I think that's an important thing to be aware of - to me boots and cargos alone don't evoke any of those things you're concerned about, but it really depends where you go from there. There are sleek, modern technical jackets out there which feel futuristic without the same level of military association or don't use the same pocket placement you'd find on military garments. Accessories also play into it too - the warcore/tacticool stuff often uses plate carriers, leg holsters, and other sorts of gear which is heavily associated with war, and avoiding those makes a massive difference.

Drop-crotch pants might not look the best on you, but otherwise; without doubt! Tapered pants will actually make you look taller :) If you're a slim guy, women's outdoor/technical/active clothing could be an great option. There's a lot of unisex-styled stuff there, but measurements are generally shorter (and slimmer) than in men's similar wear. Accessories are usually one-size-fits all, but I would suggest avoiding bulky backpacks as they'll easily look out-of-proportion. On the other hand, cross-body- and messenger bags (even huge ones) will do you a favor and they're very tactical too :)

I like the denim analogy but why do people not pay too much attention to denim. I argue its because most denim does not cost as much as tech wear.

I'm obviously not Anton, but I'd say that denim's footprint in the market and culture (at least in the West) means that there are a lot of different styles that people have found a way to fit denim into. You can make a good pair of jeans look good with almost any sort of shirt, or jacket, or footwear. And if you've already got a thought-out style, denim likely has a place in your closet. Maybe you wear sneakers with a t-shirt, maybe you lean toward button-down flannel and boots, maybe a blazer and dress shoes, maybe basketball shoes and hooded sweatshirts. Techwear, on the other hand, is relatively recent. You're not necessarily going to see someone wearing it every day (depending on where you are, of course). Tech pants haven't been established as a style thing nearly as long as jeans, so the people who wear them tend to be more deliberate about what they're putting on. I mean, I love them but jeans are basically default pants. If you tell someone in the West "pair of pants" they're probably going to imagine denim.
