I am a 3rd year architecture student and I became inspired towards architecture when I was around your age. Are you prepared for how hard it is to succeed? My first year class was 175 students strong and now after completing 2 years we are down to less than 50 students. The graduating 5th years only had 22 kids finish. Many of the professors will do everything in their power to put you down and make you feel like you can't make it. Even if you work ahead of the class the professor will simply make you redo work to make slight improvements. To be a successful architect, you must be an extremely hard working optimistic masochist. Be prepared to have either no friends outside of studio or be prepared to barely pass if you do. My dad has a highschool friend of his who is getting ready to retire, and calculated based on the number of projects× the number of hours in each project he worked on average 60 hours a week his whole life. If I had known it would be like this, I would not have gone into architecture.
@SmokeystarOriginal5 жыл бұрын
You will be depending on your parents for many years after you get out of school as it is a slow building career. Remember how he referred to 30 year olds as being very young, unseasoned architects. I will be done with school by the time I am 23 and it is scary to think it will be another 7 years after that before I will start to get any traction in the industry. If you are a woman you also have to think that you will not be able to have children until you have established yourself as an architect (around age 35) unless you want to see your career go right out the window.
@SmokeystarOriginal5 жыл бұрын
@ruslana shisha Because it's the conclusion I've come up with. I keep coming back to being positive because of minor victories, but the downsides are soul crushing. I could make more as a construction manager for 1/3 work load. I just want to be able to leave work to get married and have children without it ruining my career. I want to have a social life. I've been outcast by my peers, and I hate the countless hours of working alone with no one to turn to for help.
@SmokeystarOriginal5 жыл бұрын
@ruslana shisha just what I've heard from people in the industry. Most people are not a Bjarke Ingles or a Zaha Hadid. To be a starchitect you have to devote your everything to architecture and be gifted as well. Most people will spend much of their career detailing other people's designs, and it takes forever to be successful enough to actually make a worthwhile income.
@SmokeystarOriginal5 жыл бұрын
@ruslana shisha Btw, I want to say thank you for the encouragement. I do believe I am quite talented but at the end of the day there are always people better than you. Also like I said, it really sucks once all of your friends are kicked out of the program. Like I still have acquaintances, but everyone has someone else that they are closer with, so I'm kinda just the odd ball out. I get shoehorned in with random people whenever there is a group assignment, so I'm either out of the loop or the one doing all the work. It just really sucks to not have anyone you feel like you could turn to.

I am 18 years old currently living in the Philippines. I always dreamed of designing houses but during my senior year in highschool,my life got a little bit of twist.Firstly I got the opportunity of studying in Australia.I was accepted on one of the top school but not in the course that I always dreamed of which is the architecture. Regardless I still pushed it through.Unfortunately I was not granted with student visa due to some complications. Tbh I'm actually happy that event happen because I can now pursue architect on one of the top schools in my home country.The only downside is that I lost 1 year of my life that I'm supposed to be studying and for asian people that sucks. Regardless of all of that I'm still determined to become licensed architect. I just wish that life would allow me that. Wish me luck for my upcoming college life.
