I’m from Pa (central Pa). I have a car that kinda doesn’t have a title. There is a registration “title” from MN, but from 1964, the car is from 1955 tho…it’s a project so not too much concerned but when I do start working on it, I would like a legit Pa title.

​@@zracer1099take your registration title for your project vehicle, to your local DMV. They will tell you what course of action that you will need to take. Also make sure you have that title transferred Into your name before starting said project. Rather then waiting till after the project is finished. Otherwise you could potentially be out a lot of time and money, if for some reason your state decides not to issue you said title. Or just aquire the necessary paperwork from the DMV, for a state issued vin number. Like you would do when building when building a mail order ( kit car ) street rod or custom bike, or building a home made trailer, lost or salvage title etc. In Wisconsin this paperwork is all on the same form from the DMV, and it's just a matter of checking the appropriate boxes, and turning it in. Your states DMV probably has and/or uses a similar form.

You created way too many problems and hassle with this process because you don't know the definitions of the words being used here. 1. Never register your automobile with the state, you only register a motor vehicle if your in COMMERCE. 2. Registration is transferring ownership to the state. 3. Certificate means COPY, you have a copy, not an original title. 4. Bill of sale is the real title and proof of ownership that's why the DMV wants your bill of sale. 5. The state cannot convert your rights into privileges. 6. You can go to your county court and sue Jane or John doe for a title and get it the same day just pay the court the fees for the process. That's all you have to do to get a "certificate of title" for the state. With a certificate of title that means the state owns it and you have a usufruct privilege of using it. 7. Screw all the fuggery of complying with tyrants, all you need is to write up a bill of sale and get it notarized, then tell the state you're selling the vehicle overseas and you need the MCO(manufacturer certificate of origin). Now you're in possession of all the proper documents proving you have ownership of said automobile. Just in this 1 step. Bill of sale and MCO is all you'll ever need, if you have the balls to stand up for yourself and your personal private property.

I’m a fellow Pennsylvanian from berks county, I knew you could go to court for a title for an abandoned vehicle on your property but I didn’t know it could also be done with something just simply bought with a lost title. Sounds like a pain but cool that it’s actually possible!

If you have a friend who owns a garage he or she can usually get a title for the storage bill, and then transfer it to you. At least in N.C

I have all my titles except my Ram 2500 it’s in both my wife and I name unfortunately it’s MIA……. I live in PA as well fortunately we can submit for a duplicate. I bought a car without a title in Oklahoma two years ago. I found a title attorney that got me a court-ordered title within two weeks for $250, $100 court fee and $150 for the attorney. I never had to go to court the attorney took care of everything for me. He contacted the previous registered owner, judge granted a title for the car. Title was mailed out with my name on it and I only had to bring the title to the tag agency to get a tag for the car.

Find out what state the vehicle was sold in when it was new. Request the MCO from that state. If they don’t have it, find a mechanic to right you a salvage title. If the state does send you the MCO, you now truly own the vehicle. No need for license plate or registration, as long as you don’t use the vehicle for business or for profit.

My late Dad had given a car to my nephew to drive back and forth to college. When he died I became executor of his Will. We could not find the title among Dad's things. My brother (nephew's father) and I went to the DMV and tried to take care of this. Showed them Dad's death certificate, copy of the will showing I was Executor. No, they said Dad should have signed it over, which he can't, being dead and all. We went round and round with the DMV lady. Finally I just turned to my brother and said "OK, we'll just leave it out front in the parking lot with the keys in it. They'll tow it eventually and send notification to Dad's address and we wipe our hands of the whole thing." We got up and started walking out. They ran after us and suddenly had a way to do the transfer.

I had a 79 250 back in the 90's wish i never let it go, but im in WNY so most older vehicles are rusted away from the damn road salt the dump in tons by the mile around here in winter 5 months of the yr! In Arizona, if it on you property for eother 30 or 90 days you can just file abandoned title. Same if its abandoned on the side of the road.

Wow what a process. In Canada it is easy to get the registration. Here we don't have titles. If the registration is missing all we need is a bill of sale and an affidavit stating that I own the vehicle and I will get a new registration.

I'm in Cali so my rules are a little different. But I've bought numerous vehicles with no papers before from a lien sale. When you file for it at DMV they send out notices to all previous owners on file. If nobody claims it in 45 days(or so) they send you the title. Easy peasy if it's pre-smog and was originally a CA vehicle. Otherwise it could be a long, costly, ongoing nightmare.

@@Hillbillypunk Although I don't condone falsifying any docs, producing a bill of sale can be an easier route. And even if you're lucky enough to be in a CA county that doesn't require the biannual smog (I'm not), you're still required to pass smog every change of ownership. Good luck.

It's not something I do constantly. Was a one time thing, my buddy moved states away and left me a '71 Dart without any paperwork. So I just wrote a bill of sale and signed his name. Gave it to the DMV, they mailed me a pink slip. My point was, it's that easy to obtain a title in California, given the car has no lean on it, and it's not stolen.

What about an abandoned vehicle title? In my state you go to the dmv and say this vehicle is abandoned, then you put an ad in the paper then go back in 60? Days to the dmv again and get your title if no one claims the vehicle. Thats what a lot of people do at least.

I have a ‘72 Mercury that was bought new by my great grandparents. Both of them have passed, I have inherited the car, have the original title, but I can’t ever get the same story as what to do to get it in my name.

Go to your local DMV, bring as much vehicle info as possible, ask all and any questions you have, and they will be able to get you current facts and procedures to make it happen. This is fairly simple process that may take 2-3 trips to DMV, and a couple hrs of your time. Idk how you could be getting conflicting info if you're seeking reputable sources (and not just complaining to people on the internet). Good luck.

@@travisdean8794 It will be different for each state, In Texas you just apply for a bonded title, you get it in 30 days with a small bond usually costs $100 or so.. If nobody challenges ownership in 3 years you get a permanent title. Point is you need to know what the process is in the state you are in.

Also i look the other way and pass on it if its not a vintage vehicle that looks to be abandoned for a while. Because the circumstances are usually shady, and it's fact that the PO is too lazy a pos to file the paperwork themselves. Each time it changes hands w/o proper docs, it gets worse and worse. More difficult. And here in CA there's almost certainly a smog problem.

True, the real owner is the one that holds the MCO. The state takes it when the vehicle is sold from the dealer. The buyer gets a proof of title. That means use have permission from the state to use the vehicle. You don’t own it. If you can get the state to send you the MCO, then you don’t have to have a license plate or registration.

It can get very complicated when dealing with a vehicle that had supposedly been junked! Affidavits from the former owner, notices correctly posted in the correct newspapers... No! It isn't as simple as you make it out! At least not in my state!

"Title" is not a piece of paper. Title is the right of ownership and possession. The piece of paper is more accurately known as "proof of title". Southern states just don't require proof of title to transfer title of an older vehicle. In function it doesn't matter. Call the scrap of paper the "title", it's fine. Even the states seem to now.
