I was a working cop in 1974 when I got into a gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects in a dark parking lot during the PM rush hour. I rammed the suspect’s car head-on @ low speed, jumped out using the front of my cruiser for cover and exchanged rounds until he was down. I’m glad this young man prevailed and pray for his healing, and that of his young son. As terrible as it is to take a life at least my family was home safe in my incident.

It depends on what gets transferred into long term memory. After a fight or flight scenario, you can actually experience false memories or have gaps in your memory because your brain discards any info it doesn't think is necessary to survival. That's why it is important you say as little as possible, get an attorney, and have the time to process what really happened vs. what did not. Talking with the police in an interrogation room immediately after a self defense shooting is not a smart idea.

When the police shoot a person, there’s an investigation first before an arrest. When you defend yourself, you’re arrested and jailed until an investigation is done. It needs to be the same for both.
@SovietWinnieThePoo
@SovietWinnieThePoo 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a bit of a slippery slope though. An overwhelming majority of shootings (not police related) are murder, and not self defense. Are we going to let a murderer stay on the streets until the investigation is done properly? Also, in cases like this gentleman’s, the cop has no idea what is going on other then the fact that there was a shoot out and someone is lying there bleeding out. Of course, nothing is black and white, and you have to work with the evidence at hand.

They say innocent until proven guilty but the actions of an investigation say the opposite. It’s really guilty until proven innocent. If it weren’t then why arrest the person if they are presumed innocent? That has just never made sense to me. Even their explanation for it doesn’t make sense lol

The firearm in your hands when the responding officers arrive can go wrong for anyone no matter the color of the skin. It is just common sense to not have one in your hands when the police show up. They get a radio call involving shots fired and they don't know who the victims is. I've been there and as the officers arrived to take control of multiple suspects, I quickly holster mine and put my hands up. You should be more afraid of an armed citizen arriving to the scene and not knowing what just occurred, and decides to be a hero. There the skin color will most likely come into play. So if the danger is over, holster up and cover it. And enjoy your fine work man. Don't feel bad. Feel grateful that you trained for a day you hope never comes. Well it did and it may come again. May that experience never happen again but hopefully it made you stronger, especially your mind. What else can I say.

I was serving a warrant as a bounty hunter one night and was at the suspect's grandmothers house. She refused to open the door and called the police and told them someone was breaking into her house. I always called the police and told them where i would be working on a case but this night i was supporting another bounty hunter on this case. I asked if he had called it in and he said he had, but he had not. I was in the backyard with a sawed off 12 gauge shotgun and my handgun in a holster on my hip. The police came up the alley so i walked to the back fence and waived at them. They shone their spotlight on me and told me to put the shotgun on the ground. I did so with no suspicious moves. They came up i explained who i was and what we were doing. The officer told me my partner had not called it in and the grandmother had called it in as a home invasion. The suspect was not even there that night and that was the last time i worked with that bounty hunter. He could have gotten me killed that night.

Outstanding work young man. Your living proof of why good training is a must have if you've made the decision to keep and carry a weapon for protection. God was with you at that hour. It's unfortunate that your young son was also involved, but I'm sure your the type of Father that will get him to understand what happened and why. I'm also sure that you'll raise him up to be a fine young man as are you. Hot work there son, very glad you survived. I spent 38 years in law enforcement and was involved in 4 gun fights. Both my Marine Corps and LAPD training are some of the best available. They put you in the mindset and teach you the skills needed until they become reflexes. It's so that no rational man or woman wants to injur or kill another human, but that's up to them, they make a poor choice and end up shoot and often killed as a result. Incidents such as this are like a car accident, they are over just like that. That's why it's SOOO important to train regularly. Mike I'm glad you interaction with CPD went well. CPD is one of the most professional law enforcement departments in America. As with any Police departments these things can unfortunately go sideways if you don't fallow a simple protocol when they first arrive. From experience I can tell you that the information we receive is either very basic to dangerously incomplete. All we normally know is a location and a shooting just occurred. That's why at the point you hear the responding units arrive re holster your weapon and put your hands up and in plain view and DON'T MOVE UNTIL TOLD TO DO SO. I can't stress that enough. I understand your probably going to be in some degree of shock and confusion. Tell the officers that you were just attacked and need their help. Tell them you have a weapon and where it is. They will remove it and put you in cuffs normally. At this point your being detained put normally not under arrest. You will be advised of your rights, make only the very basic statements that you were attacked and forced to defend yourself. Point out any whiteness and any physical evidence that you can see. After that request medical attention whether you believe you injured or not. Make no detailed statements until you have an attorney present. If your arrested don't panic, make no statements to anyone you might be locked up with or to the C.O.'s You'll have your day in court and this will all get straightened out then. Believe me when I tell you it's the same way for a Cop. We potentially have to sweat a Grand Jury if it goes that far just like anyone else.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm still working on the comfort level - empty. Start each day with a prayer specifically to not need to present it. While I need to get back to the USCCA training videos, I've been thinking more about less lethal options to have ready if possible - bat in the home, spray for the eyes etc while working on physical fitness & awareness. A couple months ago noticed a man seemed to pop up in every aisle I was in & he was looking at me. To be sure I back tracked 2 then a 4th aisle. That gave me time to decide what to do if ____. That situation got me motivated to get serious about training AND actually carrying.

Best advice ever! TRAIN! I know many that have a false sense of security simply because they carry a weapon (firearm or otherwise) but have very little experience with it, deploying it, and using it. So glad this turned out the way it did for him and one less thug on the street

Excellent video - "A day in the life" approach. This is what it really means when your CCW is utilized. I think that you attaining FFL01 is a superb expression of freedom, especially in Chicago - all the best, and keep praying.
