Anyone who's ever played Call of Duty already knows that the best way to survive a gunfight is to immediately start jumping around and running erratically.

I am in my 60's now but I still remember the section battle drills, Dash, down, crawl, observe, sights fire.. the timing between the crack and thud indicates the distance of the firer, 1st drill was reaction to effective enemy fire, 2nd one was locating the enemy, if the firing stops, your 2 lowest ranked riflemen on the outside edges of the spearhead or arrowhead formation would get up and dash forward to draw fire, stage 3 was winning the firefight, stage 4 is the assault, attack and fight through, 5 was the reorg, we were taught if caught in an ambush then your already in the kill zone, so trying to form a base of fire and trying to withdraw will get you all killed as your going to run into the cut offs... so what you would do is push forward towards the enemy and try and get between the fire positions so they cant fire on you without firing on their own blokes.. but that was 70's and 80'stactics as taught in the Light Division,

Did 12 years as a Marine Infantry Rifleman, 5 deployments Iraq Invasion in 03, Second Battle of Fallujah 04, Haditha 05-06, Operation Phantom Hammer Iraq with the 13th MEU 2007, then Helmand Province Afghanistan 2010. Went from a team leader, to Squad leader, to Assistant platoon Sgt to Platoon Sgt. Like he said knowing your Marines or Soldiers are able to react to contact is important because in leadership positions your folks reacting correctly immediately gives you time to start scanning and assessing the situation so you can start figuring out how to react quickly. Absolutely situational awareness move how you were trained and drill until it is muscle memory of where you go when you come under fire. Make sure you aren't flagging your brothers. I Iraq it was alot easier at least from my experience to determine where the fire was coming from because it was usually alot closer, in Afghanistan they were engaging from alot further distance and once you figure out what direction it was coming from sometimes we would have to really watch for muzzle flashes or puffs of dirt to give away their firing positions. They would hide in caves along the mountain sides, or be hidden on the wadis all around us or from some compound 100 meters away. I would run my Marines like football practice in high school practicing plays, to where you heard the play, you didn't even have to think you just did it without even realizing, that is what you want to happen of you come under fire in a wedge, a ranger file, you your body to just go to where you are supposed with out even thinking about it and engaging. Practice, lots and lots of practice

I remember in recruit training we did a fire and movement and spent 5 minutes moving up to a Corporal blank firing at us. Once we finished we were led to our Sergeant who was on our right who had basically shot off a magazine at us without any of the section even knowing. If that were real, the 2 of them probably would have butchered all of us and we wouldn't have realised it wasn't even the guy we were shooting back at. That really showed us all how easy it is to get tunnel vision on what you think is the threat.

I’ve never been in the military but I do have an extensive amount of time on the US-Mexican border interacting with unlicensed pharmaceutical transportation specialists. There’s a couple things you didn’t mention that will help you not get killed if somebody(s) starts shooting at you. This is more for a private citizen rather than a LEO or someone in a military. The first thing is unless you are seriously short of ammo or you’re worried about your background is to immediately send some rounds back in the general direction of the person or people shooting at you as you move towards concealment better yet cover. Yeah it’s great if you hit them but just letting them know they’re getting shot at will likely make them momentarily stop shooting because they’re moving towards or taking cover themselves. Even if they continue to shoot their aim will hopefully be degraded. The second thing is that it’s usually best once you have concealment better yet cover to just wait things out. Few people are going to advance into buildings/brush/woods to try and root out armed enemy. There’s a real good chance the person(s) shooting at you will move on. They get bored or they’re worried about LEO’s or you having buddies show up. If you think they have buddies coming or you suspect they can move to a position to compromise your cover then ok, move. But even if you have to crawl through a quarter mile of sticker brush to stay hidden and break contact, do it. Even though NV gear is becoming more common, waiting until nightfall will usually do the trick. Here’s a few final mistakes people have made. Talking too loud especially at night. Smoking. Using established well known trails. Thinking, “Hey, I’m like 500 meters from that guy with the rifle so I should be fine.” Hope this helps you guys out. Edit: And carry a firearm that goes “bang” at least 99.5% (or better) when you pull the trigger. I’m astounded by how many guys I’ve run into that were carrying a rifle or EDC pistol that was unreliable. Years ago I was in the Vekol valley AZ which is a real active smuggling area. This dude shows up with a SKS that he had pulled the reliable 10 round internal magazine out of in favor of these duckbill detachable 20 or 30 round magazines. As we’re talking he tells me the rifle really doesn’t work well with the detachable mags. So we find a wash to shoot in so I can look at it and sure enough it malfunctions more often then it doesn’t. As soon as we start shooting my radio scanner picks up two Spanish speaking dudes who were likely spotters wondering whether we’re the Policia. I asked the guy if he brought his internal magazine but he didn’t. If it doesn’t work, fix it, sell it, or use it only as a range toy.

You are correct on immediate return of a few rounds - SF call these 'lifesaver' rounds, typically 2 or 3 rounds returned before moving using the battle sights. You are typically wrong about waiting it out though. You should be breaking contact fast and aggressively. Break contact is always into cover anyway, then onto an exfil route, often proven. If you're still taking fire you're not in cover and able to exfil and should be returning fire. You keep going until you have broken cover and can patrol off/bug out, however long it takes. But a small team sitting in cover is asking for huge trouble if it's possible to get out of there.

Fire discipline is right up there with the top military skills. You can't say "time out" if you have shot off all your ammo. Don't assume that you will be re-supplied just in time. If you have no rounds left, all you have is basically a club. With short-barreled assault guns, you don't really have an effective bayonet combo any more. Short barrels are only good for CQB scenarios anyway. A full auto option on rifles is probably only good for really well-trained troops. probably why they adopted the 5.56 round to make logistics easier and you can carry more rounds. I am prejudiced about that, because the NATO 7.62 was a highly effective round. And if you do go full auto, at BEST only the first two rounds are likely to hit anything, and the rest of the mag kills clouds and bushes. Automatic fire is mainly for the SAW, and even then only 3 to 5 rounds bursts. Unless the gun has a stoppage, or you are moving it, or whatever, then a couple of guys can go full auto briefly to cover. Even the gun can run out of ammo, because you have to carry the stuff. [The gun group, or even the whole section].

I have 500 hours of simulated combat experience. I have hands on pistol and rifle training. I have played dozens of rounds of paintball matches. My simulated combat experience was the most useful. The zig zag running pattern, the incoming fire reaction stance, the ambushes ect. The explaination here is rudimentary. To effectively survive a gunfight a person needs to return fire while simultaneously seeking cover. If all someone has is this video and they find themselves in a gunfight they would not survive if their oppponent has my experience level. example, whilst playing airsoft I setup an ambush along a path, a group of 5 of the enemy team came walking down the path, i tagged 3 out of the 5.

When new guys have their first contact all drills get flushed down the toilette. How it should be: Contact, shoot, down, shoot, down, shoot, cover, shoot, retreat one by one (or something like this) while maintaining adaquat fire, How it is usually: Contact, all down, wild fire, "anyone see the enemy?" "No!" "So what are you shooting at?", enemy fire, wild fire again, reload, somewhat organized retreat. Except that one guy who follows the protocol, takes cover behind a tree and singlehandedly tries to stop the enemy until the leader comes back and asks what the hell he is still doing there. "Follow protocol, sir!" and sometimes gets a star for bravery/stubborness😂

Initially returning fire is super important for small teams though. It's why it's drilled into SF personnel and tactics aren't to look for personal cover (although take it if it's there) or belt buckle.

@@ln5747 true in certain situations and environments I understand that , i.e up close and personal but if there is any distance from me and the " enemy " you best believe im hitting the deck like a sack of shi ..... Or getting straight behind available cover then returning rounds, not getting turned into swiss cheese of far more important than getting the initial rounds down in my personal experience and opinion , no good getting rounds down and getting hit for the sake of firing what will likely be not very accurate rounds down in the general location , each to their own though this is just my realistic experience, in a build up environment/ fibua room to room ect obviously is a different story all together its just fastest fingers first then lol ,

@@MICHAEL-wg2lh I know it rarely goes to plan in reality and all scenarios are different/situation dependent but SF teach this not just for FIBUA but pretty much all scenarios involving small team patrol tactics. Break contacts are done taking a knee and never really belt buckle unless there's a serious lull in the firefight for whatever reason. Initial rounds are not aimed shots, they are 'lifesavers'. You also can't choose your cover if you've only got 4 other guys who also have to get rounds down asap, you'll cut up their arcs and nobody will be firing, everyone is running for cover etc. You'll all be fucked anyway. The firers closest to the enemy will be breaking contact as soon as rounds are going down, typically a few seconds. The lifesaver rounds from the initial firer are probably the most important aspect of breaking contact for small units.
@MICHAEL-wg2lh
@MICHAEL-wg2lh 5 күн бұрын
@@ln5747 I understand all this and was trained myself to break contact in the ways described as you say but what the book says and what reality dictates are two different things if I'd done things by the book I would of probably been smoked numerous times over lol, again you are entitled to believe and do what you think is right and what you have experienced and know works for you , all I am saying is what the book says is not always right and we all learned to not follow by the book drills some of the time if we did we would have been dead in certain situations that we actually survived due to not following by the book drills , that's all I am saying basically

The only 'Contact Drill' that ever happens is as follows.... Everyone gets behind cover or down on their guts as low as they can and then figure out what the fuck is going on.... this is where belt webbing is better than chest rigs etc because with all your shit sitting on your front you can't get down flat. Fire control orders in jungle/close country don't work because nobody can hear a bloody thing anyway.... close range, high volume of fire in a short space of time.... very loud.

Thank you. You never forget the feeling that you want to get so low that you look UP at your weapon.You get the oddest feeling in the cheeks of your ass. Most people who comment here have never faced grazing fire (or any other kind). Or made a white water stream crossing.Chest rigs put the weight up near the top end (where the air goes in and out). You step on the green-vegetation shit that seems to always cover the perfectly round rocks and feels like grease and hope you don't slip. A chest rig insures that you will go top end down into the water even though you slip your ruck sack straps off on the downstream side. You DID wear a quick release pistol belt, right?And open it before you enter the water. I had two friends drown like that. Another time lost an M-60 for more than a day. But that wasn't in the movies or "Call of duty".

@@ln5747 I understand that nearly all the rucksacks and combat packs out here have solid, firmly attached shoulder straps. NO quick releases, and they dearly need them. Naturally, at least 99% of all white water stream crossings are made with the white water around your chin, no matter how tall or short you are.

@ln5747 5 күн бұрын
@@tomgoodwin9161 quick release buckles etc add another point of failure. Unsure they'd stand up to the rigours of load carrying on the straps themselves. When you can just resolve the problem with proper river crossing drills. Soldiers crossing white water at any significant height with their packs on their backs are also poorly trained and should be doing other drills/techniques.

I've heard/read somewhere that one of the most coveted things in a firefight is to outflank the enemy so you can catch them in a double 90-degree crossfire so no matter which direction they turn to fire, they take fire from their flanks.

It's the job of the 2i/c to take pressure of the commander so he can do a ground and situation appreciation, obviously the team moves forward to dead ground or extract from the fight under suppressing fire. If an ambush is placed and executed correctly, don't forget they pick the place which is more favourable to them and there's highly likely no one would survive unscathed. Even if you managed to extract to the flanks they're be cut off groups waiting for you. Depending on where and the distance the enemy engaging from it'll be hard to assess initially in the confusion you'll probably go to ground instinctively whereby losing momentum. Ideally to have any chance of survival is to push through into the ambush and past it, hopefully you're guys are briefed of the ground and the next RV which would be automatically the ERV, if not possible make way back to last RV.
