Do be fair this isn't the way all greek people drive but indeed in Crete there are some of the worst drivers in Greece, they never follow the rules. I am from Thessaloniki city (nothern part of Greece) and when i was in Crete i was shocked from the way the locals there driving. So, have that in mind that this is not how all people in Greece drive in general. 😅

@@geogeo2299 People that visit other places with such a mentality are the root of the problem, always. Coming from a guy that spends 7 months of his entire year to drive about 80.000km on the roads of this island, especially the Highway and the cities, I can cover more than 1 "driving faction" in Crete by saying, the absolute worst drivers in the summer in the island are the guy above and anyone like him. Half of the time driving 20-30 under the speed limit because he doesn't know his route, without giving way or hugging the right side, as not to create traffic. The other half with uneven driving, speeding because he's fast, slowing because he wants to take photos, suddenly turning because his GPS screamed to take a turn while he was not paying attention. In the end, we know that the worst drivers of the summer are our own kinsmen from around Greece, not the foreign tourist. Wanna take some actual advice for driving in the island? Keep a steady pace and outside the cities, stick to the right side of the road if you're going by the speed limit or 10-20 lower. Do not stick behind other tourists that do the same, or even worse, do not give way even, so that you avoid creating huge lines on the highway. That is absolutely all you need to know.

Honking your horn ( using the sound signal ) is free (no cost) and will save you and others from unpleasant situations . So use it as often as you need , nobody will give you a ticket in Greece for the sound signal . Better safe than sorry . Don't make agressive movements or direction changes when driving and the motorcycles ( and cars ) will manouver around you .Always have situational awareness . If you are a pedestrian don't expect the traffic to stop for you , pass the road when it is safe for you ( you take care for yourself ) . Most importanly enjoy your vacation to Greece .

one more important rule : when u want to park , click the hazard warning lights, not just the left or right flash, only then the car behind u knows that u want to park and will keep the distance or else he will just continue behind u and than u cant move backwards to park.

Ok since you guys are new to the country, let me break this down to you (joking): Who has priority: Are you from that particular area and the other person is not? If yes, YOU have priority. You are BOTH from that area? Normal rules apply. NEITHER of you are from that area? If yes, is any of the 2 drivers married into a person (or has relatives) from that area? If yes, that driver has priority. NEITHER of you are from that area and none of you has any immediate family in that area? Normal rules apply.

Don't confuse Crete with Greece. Many of your suggestions don't apply to the rest of the country. Especially in northern Greece. The best is to follow always the laws. If you have a traffic accident by driving like that, neither your car/life insurance nor the curt will be on your side. The most important rule is to be hyper aware of your surroundings and drive defensive. Btw, motorbikes/scooters are the best means of transport. Fastest, cheapest, easiest way to find parking spots. Filtering is allowed in Greece. The weather helps immensely too. That's why they are so popular here. All Greek car drivers are familiar with them. Most car drivers have also their own motorbikes/scooters too. So, they have knowledge. Most learn to ride motorbikes, even before they get a car. Me included.

The fact that you think this suggests that in fact you lack critical thinking skills. Drivers in Greece regularly get themselves into and cause others trouble on the roads by the lack of care/recklessness shown while driving (both to themselves and others - "oti 8eloume 8a kanoume!"), and they are able to react more often than not (due to regular human reflexes, not better reflexes, you chump); but not always, which is why there are numerous little churches beside the roads all over Greece - because Greeks are terrible drivers and lack critical thinking skills while driving. They also do a disservice to their mothers and to the idea that Greeks are friendly by allowing the red mist to descend whenever anyone dares to cut in front of them (which is ironic given that they are constantly looking for a gap to dive into, all the while being consumed by a desire to prevent others from cutting in front of them) or slows them down (because they want to go faster, even though the car in front has nowhere to go). A riddle inside an enigma. "Inat". Mprabo!!

Driving in Crete for two weeks I got to see the worst driving I have ever seen (and Ive spent time in the USA). The best bit was the road with 6 people passing eachother all at the same time 2 of them were doing 60-70 in the dirt off the road 2 were in the hard shoulder (using both sides) best of all there was a blind corner coming up so it was just a 6 car wide wall of death! The rest of the time its just a free for all a bit like carmageddon but with some very narrow and badly looked after roads. Oh and and there are "about to explode" dead animals everywhere! My tip for driving there, DON'T!

As a Greek, I'm going to confirm that these poijts are true unfortunately (especially the one about pedestrian crossings) but I should say that Crete in particular is an extra crazy place to drive. The roads are mountainous and winding but the local farmers know them too well and they just rush through them in their massive pickup trucks. It's quite intimidating for non locals who are driving on those roads for the first time. Bottomline, if you're a tourist driving in Greece can be a challenge and the final boss of the game is Crete.😂

It is a shame that we give such a dangerous driving experience to newcomers but Greeks also. And it is a great reflection of our society. This behavior of everyone doing what they want for their own benefit even by breaking the rules is EVERYWHERE in our society.

@@Sunpire Thank you for your kind words! Yes, I believe it is very important for visitors to know this stuff, literally I wouldn't change anything. And as a Greek I want to add something specifing but very inportant IMO: NEVER TRY TO ADJUST YOUR DRIVING OR RIDING BASED ON A PERSON BEHIND YOU IN A HURRY. especially when parking, take your time and don't mind at all with the negative honks or stuff the other(s) might have to say. But also in more open roads the best thing to do is to be a bit mindful of giving space to overtake you IF and WHEN you can or want. I wish all the best to your channel and your efforts to live here. Most important rule: When in rural Greece, especially Crete island, beware that locals have ALWAYS priority under ALL circumstances, next come those who have married a local, lastly come the visitors. How can you tell a local? That's your problem. A few tips: His/her car's speakers are blasting, honks to greet every one he knows, double or triple parks exactly in front of his destination, drives ALWAYS speaking on his mobile(that applies to the entire Greece). If you fail to spot the local, you pay for the damage because in a court all "eye-witnesses" (local of course) will testify against you. Another tip: Having a dash cam wont help you in an accident. You can not go in court with your dash cam proof, demanding compensation. Cams are illegal in Greece. You can only produce the video to defend yourself, as a defendant if you are accused, which probably happen. After saying these, a question: Why a logical, sane person who earns his money the hard way, would come to Greece where it is very expensive for what it offers, with no security, no health services, full of illegal foreigners, with no serious public transportation? Unless we are talking about ALL INCLUSIVE packets, where tourists are driven from the airport to a hotel and stay within it, using hotel's facilities, driven by hotel buses for sight seeing.

Excellent video! The main problem, at least here in Athens is people driving while holding their phones with one hand having engaging conversations, or even texting. On Santorini the main problem was ATVs being driven very slowly by inexperienced tourists and not pulling aside, when given the chance so that the drivers behind them can overtake them safely. It always felt weird to me, why a group of 4 tourists , for example 4 young women that travelled together , would rent 4 ATVs instead of one car, with the slowest one usually leading the way, with minivans that are always in a hurry attempting very dangerous overtakings. In Crete I also think Raki could be an extra issue, as well as unmaintained roads as well as the mountainous terrain. We should all be extra careful, as this is a very serious issue in Greece

I am from Crete and specific Chania...Some kind advise for all you tourist came to our roads... First of all in Crete you find some bad drivers for sure but also bad drivers(and worst) also you find in all Greece... Specially in the big city's like Athens and Thessaloniki which they think that is Schumacher's students...The most important thing everyone must learn when they came to Crete is this...Crete is one of the most popular places for tourism in Greece and general...the roads are the worst in Greece... simple as that!!!The "national road" is for laugh and crying together...also the lack of signs, lights e.t.c...So...When you rent a car and enter the "national road" ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS go RIGHT!!! RIGHT...so simple...in Crete which the road only has one lane and the emergency lane we use the emergency when we want to go slowly...You don't have any problems with the police because they know the problem with the roads and the traffic and nobody tells you nothing...The police,if you drive in the normal lane (because is the right thing of course) they show you the lights to go right!!!The police!!I worked in rent a car company for over 10 years and always i advise my customers to do that simple thing... ALWAYS DRIVE TO THE RIGHT... Almost everyone when they return me the car they thank me about my advice and they understand what is the problem...Inform your friends if they want to come to Crete about that and you personally (if you want to return some time) do that and you thank me later... Regards from Chania...👍👍👍👍

I have been driving in Canada from 1978 i was always a good safe driver. When we get our drivers license it comes with a 12-15 demerit point system. So if you drive fast according to the speed limit is about 2 points deduction per 10km off you 12 points if you lose you lose all 12 points driver looses the license and the police keep your car in storage I believe. That’s the traffic laws here. NOW IN CRETE is different story as you explain well. Oh yes oh my god they're really bad drivers they don't stop if somebody crossing the street and the streets are narrow and a few times I come very near to the tire 🛞 4-5 cm to my foot. On my next visit I would buy a big red plastic hockey stick 🏒 or hammer 🔨 have in clear view so the can see it that I have a hammer they better stop: so I can cross the street safely. No there are not insurance scams in the way you describe it. Insurance in cars here works differently than lets say in the U.S or in the UK in so many levels. First of all car insurances are cheap and they only cover repairs, if it's not your fault and nothing more. You even have to provide evidence that you fixed only the damage from the accident, anything more and goes it out of your pocket. Only previous scratches or bumps might get the benefit of getting repaired. Hardly a reason to create an accident scam.

In Greece always the behind is at fault except if you make back driving and the behind car is in no movement .the insurance cover you from damages and any injuries, keep in mind that in greece whenever theres accident with injury or death there's always a court to decide the punishment those in fault,as for demanding compensations you need to sue and go to another court but all this is paid by insurance ,usually 100% for car damages and very little to the injuries and none for the mental stress.

As you said. First rule: there are no rules. Greece is probably the most uncivilised country in Europe in terms of driving behaviour. Zero social consciousness and as a Greek i have to say that this applies unfortunately generally in the greek way of life. Sad but true.

Thank you for watching!🙏There are worse places too, if you drive carefully and with prevention you'll be fine

No we are not. Try the middle-east, Africa, south east Asia. In most countries over there the driving situation is insane.

Haha i did a bit of wrong side driving in Greece the first day. What is strange is that no one follows speed limits... We usually do that in the UK..
