Critical note: Distress pistol does NOT work against aurora wolves or aurora bears. Aurora animals are immune to every deterrent except electric lights (like streetlights) and the flashlight. A torch, fire, flares, and the distress pistol do not stop aurora predators at all.

One of the most crucial tips for newbies on higher difficulties is that you should only go outside when it's warm (basically when the sun is at the top and until the end of the day). Do not leave your shelter especially when the weather starts to get worse

Great tips. I will say this though about map knowledge, I'm a new player and really enjoy not knowing where anything is and stumbling on something cool feels all that more rewarding. So everyone should play how they want, but I'll say that being new and not knowing anything is pretty magical too.

Another great thing about stones is they can be used effectively when hunting bears, I’ve had several occasions where I’ve seen a bear far away from me, thrown a stone at it and have it slowly advance towards me, with a rifle you can easily kill shoot it in the head twice before it ever reaches you.

I've been playing since the start of the long dark, and all I've ever wanted from the game was to give you a warmth benefit from recently boiled water, ik it's just water but if it's hot then you should get a warmth bonus but maybe not as much as other things that benefit your temperature

Harvest as many cat tail stalks as you can. Most of the food items you find are only enough for exploring a map. Cat tail stalk never goes bad, it's light, it's plentyful, there's not a single negative thing about it. A real life saver in some situations. Helpful, when you have to stay inside your base in case of a huge storm, or if you like to transport items in large quantities.

Use cat tail heads to make trail markers if you don’t want to always be opening your map.

Great video and assortment of tips. My main safety tip (that can almost ruin the fun of the game tbh, so be warned of reading it) : - if you carry a lit torch/flare the wolf wont attack you, then drop the flare/torch on the ground and aim your weapon (can even be a simple stone) at the wolf and it will run away scared. Works every time. Dont hesitate for too long before aiming though, because if you just stand there after dropping the torch staring at the wolf for 8 or more seconds then it will attack you despite the torch beneath you. Drop the torch and aim at the wolf. After this trick --- your only enemy would be blizzards, so keep a flare with you at all times.

As an extra note: weapon can be anything that does any damage, even stones. Stones have saved my life more times than I can count learning this technique. Also try to keep a revolver, rifle or flashlight for aurora animals as they work different from normal animals. Loud noises still scare them but only electrical light sources scare them (flashlight, street lights, and car lights). My bonus tip for auroras is watch out for wires. They kill fast.

Thanks for the video. Point of information, the Ravine distress pistol that spawned in the train car is not there anymore as of the loot changes with the DLC. My first time heading for it when desperate for any weapon left me slack jawed. 😧

@@WanderingChord I hadn't heard it is a rare spawn. Thanks for the additional information. It used to be a guaranteed spawn. For me it isn't worth a check unless I am using the Ravine to get to or from Bleak Inlet.

Tip for lasting longer use the magnifying glass as much as possible say you needed to cook some food inside or something and it clear outside start a fire outside with a couple of sticks use a torch or take a torch and take that fire inside if you have to

Personnaly i learned maps with the help of internet while playing like you said buut I fill like now I have less pleasure to play TLD because of that, like now it's way easier to escape dangerous situation, I do not or have less this stress dopamine. Since, when a new map is out I dont check on the internet and I try to not remember the journey I done 😂 Is this happened to you guys?

I would add always carry a torch around plus at least one flare in case its windy and blows the torch out. The torch will stop pretty much stop any attacks from happening (Moose not tested). You dont want to have your game end suddenly from a wolf jumping you as can happen. Having a flare gun is good but slower to use, so I prefer a revolver actually if you have one. No wolf will attack you with a lit torch unless it an Aurora when special care must be taken. Also dont carry around much meat - especially raw meat as will arrack wildlife from further away unless you are hunting them. Try and get level 5 cooking asap and on higher difficulties dont run unless you have to as uses precious energy and food that might be very limited.

Fire dont work against Moose, Moose dont scare from fire. I learnt this hard way.. Also, wolf can attack you even if you have a torch. For example if u climbing a hill and a wolf waiting you, if a wolf soo close when realize you, it will attack

@@SisifosGaming Yes, if the fire is obstructed so the wolf cant see it then can still attack - especially happens with making fires on a corner - a wolf comes from the direction where it is hidden then will attack but 99.8% of the time you will be fine with a lit torch with wolves.
