Seems cliche however I came off of opiates heroin at22 and after a clonidine detox the best advice the old-timer had was was show up 4 90 days + 90 meetings. Keep your mouth shut and listen I was told. Introduce yourself as Long story short this was key and with 10 years without a drink or drug I knew then he had given a second chance. As we're all in our heads I felt it made sense and to his it saved my life. Needless to say life's paths have twists and turns .So pls learn 2 enjoy your truths. Remember if not for him I may have died. #1 please never judge another addict..#2 Most importantly if you can't help someone don't hurt them...

Congratulations on your 4 months, Malik. That is wonderful. And yes, it will get easier. I was just talking about this the other day with my son about how marijuana is becoming like alcohol was in my generation. It's so common now that the risks are overshadowed by the fact that so many people use marijuana and it is much more socially acceptable than it used to be. Glad you are making the decision to get healthy. Your body and brain will be much better for it!

I remember before I got sober I had a hard time understanding why someone with months or a year sober would suddenly pick up drinking/using again because they couldn’t handle it anymore and just wanted to feel normal again. My thought at the time was if you made it that far how could you not be feeling better. And now that I’m there at 11 months sober I can understand better. Anytime I think about drinking it’s not because I’m bored and want to go out and have fun and party. It’s because I’m having a horrible episode of PAWS and I just want to slow everything down and feel “normal” again.

I've been sober from alcohol for 9 months now after 15 years of daily consumption of 2 bottles of wine. It started off with liquor then I figured that wine wouldn't be as bad so I made the switch. I still have issues with "depression " but not to the extent I did a few months into sobriety. I have days when its difficult to think optimistic about the future but I just keep telling myself that this is just part of the process. I never would have thought that the affects of alcohol could last this long. The hardest part for me is the loss of looking forward to that thing that makes u "feel good". I can honestly say that I dont have the desire to drink but trying to fill that void is what's become difficult. Thanks for the info. Have been on Benzo for 30 years. I have never taken more then .5 MG clonazepam per day. I want to come off these and have started a slow taper by breaking a .5 into 4pieces. I think you seven strategies are very helpful.
@DRKJFOSTER2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim! Thank goodness you are tapering because 30 years is definitely a long time. As a result, you will most likely experience some withdrawals even with the taper, which is to be expected. But the taper will certainly lessen the impact to your body and brain. Like any recovery process, it will take time. Embracing this fact and giving yourself time and space for recovery will also help to lessen the impact. I just recently quit drinking caffeine (after probably 30+ years) and the withdrawals have been pretty awful. I'm glad to know you found the 7 tips to be helpful. Much good luck to you and your continued recovery.

Another good thing that’s subtle but helps is grounding , go outside bare feet for 20 minutes . The very best thing I think after the acute pain is over is PUSH YOURSELF THROUGH with small spurts of exercise as it will get those endorphins flowing . @DRKJFOSTER3 жыл бұрын
Hi Beercan Upp, I'm so glad to know you are finding my videos to be helpful. I answered your last question regarding the PAWS. The longer you stay clean the longer the stretches of good days will be. Mine lasted on and off for a total of about 2 years. I don't want that to scare you because it was intermittent and I went sometimes for months without anything. What I wish I knew then was how other factors like stress and what I put into my body also impacts the PAWS I experienced. I drank a ton of caffeine, didn't exercise much until I was about a year sober and ate really badly too. Those are factors that can make PAWS worse. So it really depends on various contributing factors. The good news is that you are at 1 year, which means you are that much closer to your brain fully healing. Keep going and don't let anything stop you!!

It's hard to stop taking something when you deal with extreme anxiety, and have a chronic pain. Yet you don't wanna have to take something everyday either. I've been on Suboxone for over 12 years, at 16-24 mg. I just stopped taking them 28 days ago, took myself from 16mg to none within two weeks. I'm in so much pain, and depressed, and anxious... Im thinking I should've slowly tapered would have helped, yet I don't wanna go back after being off them for almost a month, seems like that would be going backwards. However, I don't wanna just sit around in so much pain that I don't wanna do anything either...it's a horrible position to be in. Each day I wake up, I'm praying and thinking today has to be a little better than yesterday,...only to find out it's the same, or even worse on some days. I long to have energy again, and motivation to do anything.

The problem I have is I cannot tell if my post-acute withdrawal and mild to severe depression is truly something that can be talked through. When I consciously think to myself about my past trauma, I have accepted what's happen and forgiven. If I was asked is that consciously affecting your day to day I would say no, I came to terms. In reality I think to some degree it affects my unconscious mind though. I really don't want to go on SSRI's if there is something I'm missing that I'm not doing or if it's truly that my mind needs assistance after years of abuse. It's been 8 months since last use I just know I do not want to live like this forever. Can anyone speak from experience as to if they had a long Post Acute Withdrawal? A long period of time in abstinence where you didn't know if your mind would straighten out but eventually did? Thank you for your responses.

Hi Dr. Foster. I am now 61 days sober from weed. I watch some of your videos. It's been 2 months and I'm always wondering why I have this chest pains always. Is it still part of PAWS? And sometimes, I just woke up having difficulty in breathing, like choking. I'm not sure if it's panic attack. Thanks in advance.
@DRKJFOSTER3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - It's hard to say. I would seek out medical advice from someone who specializes in treating - and has extensive experience in treating - substance use disorders. It could be PAWS but it may be something else and it's better to be safe than sorry. I am not a medical doctor and even if I were, it's not advisable to give advice over the internet without knowing your full health history. Like I said, best thing to do is to seek out a doctor who specilizes in SUDs.

@@DRKJFOSTER Thank you so much Doctor Foster for responding. I just went to a medical doctor and told me that since my lab tests were all normal (lab tests were done in Oct. 17, almost 2 months ago), it could be anxiety disorder, which I believe another symptom of PAWS.
@DRKJFOSTER3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Paul. Anxiety is a very common symptom of PAWS. I'm glad to know you went to see a medical doctor. I recommend meditation, if you are not already doing this on a regular basis. As little as 2 minutes a day, consistently every day, can make a big difference. There's also tapping. That can be a big help for anxiety. If you do a search on KZbin, I'm sure there are lots of videos to show you how to do the tapping. I hope that's helpful for you.

Cindy - I am glad to know you are finding my videos helpful. Sounds like you have a lot going on with your health. I think it is important that you are being monitored by a physician, preferrably one that specifically specializes in treating individuals with substance use issues. Unfortunately, Xanax has a history of significant PAWS. Please reach out to a medical doctor for support, even if ot is by phone. I believe you can do that now. Many insurance companies offer tele-health options 💜
@LeslieGMN5 жыл бұрын
@Cindy L Yes, “dying inside” is EXACTLY what benzo withdrawal feels like! I was taking up to 8mg per day and still running out early. Twice in the past year, while waiting horribly uncomfortably for refill day, I had near-fatal seizures that landed me in hospital. After the second seizure, unable to find tapering advice, I underwent three weeks of inpatient detox. I emerged Xanax-free, but still suffering from all of the panic attacks, PTSD, agoraphobia, and anxiety for which the Xanax was prescribed in the first place. I have not yet found the answers-I’m only 2 1/2 months benzo-free-but when I’m “dying inside,” I tell myself that I won’t use today. (Not that access to benzos would be easy for me these days.) Best of luck as you withdraw and heal...

I smoked cannabis twice a day every day for 7,5 years, today I'm 10 months sober & I have severe & crippling Paws "episodes" The first 4-5 months I couldn't do anything at all just lay on the couch watching tv, even getting into the shower or brushing my teeth was hard to do I was so extremely fatigued & depressed. It wasn't until the end of august(7months sober) that I started feeling better in short periods. These periods when I'm feeling better last 2-3 weeks then the bad periods come back where I get extremely fatigued, depressed & don't want to do anything at all & recently these awful periods last 3-4 weeks, it gets so bad that just want to commit suicide the only thing that keeps me alive is knowing how much it would hurt my family. I wish this would only last for 1 year but I got the feeling I will be suffering & struggling with Paws for atleast 2-3 years if not longer.

Hi Markus - I'm so sorry to hear that you are struggling with such significant PAWS symptoms. I hope that you are being monitored by a psychiatrist or addictionologist or another medical doctor that is highly experienced working with individuals recovering from a substance use disorder. They may have something that is non-narcotic that can help alleviate some of your symptoms. I do believe it will last at least a year, but hopefully the good stretches will start to get longer. The good news is that it will eventually get better as your brain continues to heal.

Nice video. Some practicals will help. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice and have a healthier life. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep inhalation-exhalation needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Stillness brings internal peace. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

@DRKJFOSTER3 жыл бұрын
Gosh, that's a hard question. The risk is that, depending upon the environment, it could lead back to marijuana use. The issue is with the neuropathways, the connections that have been made in the brain relative to people and places where you have used marijuana. Also, alcohol numbs the prefrontal cortex. My suggestion would be to avoid any alcohol use, especially while you are experiencing PAWS.

id rather crash a spaceship at 5 million miles a second into the ground backwards than do this monumental hellscape again. its amazingly worth it to jump off the stratosphere, reentry can be kind of burny though. we did something brave survivors, grin and bear the pain, allow and imagine you enjoy. that helped me through the worst. still peeing constantly and living on baby food. every step of the marathon we get there, hammer the eckhart tolle videos, classical piano is also good interspaced with some heavy metal manson,.. if the emotion takes me. lol treat yourself like you would a sick child and remember your brain is going to take you into delusion,psychosis, stay around safe people,we arent nuts, its brain recovery. perceptions will be off, you can hear things think weird next level memories that bear no resemblance to reality. if this doesnt teach you self acceptance,nothing will. see it as a spiritual awakening, because it really is a rebirth process. gardening, get into nature and sit on the grass, lie on it if necessary, smell it,feel the earth and visualise yourself grounding that electricity. the system will grow brakes eventually, for a short time its like psychedelics you cant come down from. i think itd equate with a massive cocaine overdose and a forrest style overdose of mushrooms (the magic variety) submit to the process in full knowledge, you wont be a space cadet forever and you will have more than the bathroom to visit when you recover properly.

Although I am very sorry to hear of your suffering, I'm grateful for the suggestions you have provided for others. It sounds like you are using your suffering as motivation to move forward, knowing that you then will never have to go through this hell again. Keep going, you'll get there. Much good luck to you.

You need to be in a professional detox facility. There is nothing I can do to help you but encourage you to be sure you are being physically monitored.

Omar - the craving to use when things are going well and you are feeling good is actually very common. It's just not talked about or AS common as using because of negative emotions.
