Lots of people are having trouble understanding the book/movie difference. Maybe this will help. Robert Heinlein (book author) was a Naval Academy grad and very pro-military. He recognized that the world has always been pretty dog-eat-dog, and that you cannot have peace, prosperity, or anything worth having unless you are able to scare off or fight off those who would take it from you. There's an old quote: "You can sleep peacefully only because rough men stand ready to do violence on your behalf". Heinlein was telling a story about those men -- what they do, why they do it, and the toll it takes on them. The movie, on the other hand, was satirizing the way rulers use war as a justification to grab and hold power. That's why everything feels a little "off" -- you are MEANT to recognize it as propaganda for a totalitarian state. The infantry is incompetent because they are NOT supposed to win -- their true purpose is to keep the war going forever, so the rulers can always say "we need to raise your taxes, we need to restrict your travel, we need to control you, and if you complain, it's because you're a traitor who wants the bugs to win!". While Heinlein was proposing to limit the vote, it was in the sense of "with great power must come great responsibility". Selfish people wouldn't serve, so they don't get to vote their selfish ideas into law. In the movie, the state made sure the only path to success was by demonstrating loyalty to the state. The vote was a fake reward for showing you were responsible TO power, rather than WITH it (since people actually had no power). When slaves think they're masters, they don't think to revolt. Heinlein was trying to imagine a world where the movie COULDN'T happen that way, because free people wouldn't let it. The movie was making fun of the way people have always failed to build a Heinlein society, because they're selfish, and easily manipulated. We keep trying to eliminate Stalins, and all we get for our effort is more Stalins with slicker advertising.

Steven Scott even the original movie fails to present a fascist state. From the get go we see an elected senate with a leader stepping down, a social credit meritocracy that rewards sacrifice and selflessness, a balance between personal and collective and state power, honour and rights.

Military service wasn't the only way to citizenship. Service, in general, got you there. Military or not. The book reflected a libertarian state, all were free and equal, government service was voluntary, individuals all had the same rights. The military in the book was not the military of the movie. It wasn't massed human waves, it was a highly trained and well equipped cadre of advance war fighters. I don't recall "birth licenses" even being a thing in the book but it has been a long time since I read it.

Tj Mueller actually he disowned socialism as he got older. His disdain for left wing politics is made clear in all his books, especially Starship Troopers, with the bugs being representative of communists. But this one is by far my favourite. “Of course, the Marxian definition of value is ridiculous. All the work one cares to add will not turn a mud pie into an apple tart; it remains a mud pie, value zero. By corollary, unskillful work can easily subtract value; an untalented cook can turn wholesome dough and fresh green apples, valuable already, into an inedible mess, value zero. Conversely, a great chef can fashion of those same materials a confection of greater value than a commonplace apple tart, with no more effort than an ordinary cook uses to prepare an ordinary sweet. These kitchen illustrations demolish the Marxian theory of value -the fallacy from which the entire magnificent fraud of communism derives -and to illustrate the truth of the common-sense definition as measured interms of use.” He believed there needed to be a balance between individuality and collectivism, I think that can be done without trampling on the rights of others, maintaining individual rights and liberties while also serving a group through tiered citizenship and meritocracy. Hence the quote "the dangers of an imbalance of authority to responsibility"

The perfect solution for a massive swarm of bugs like that would be an orbital low altitude gunship with incendiary type bombs, downward facing flamethrowers, and manned gun control. Depends if you're talking about the books or the movies In the books, the mobile infantry are much more deadly than the movies. In the movies they could've used more squad machine guns and heavy weapons, assault rifles are less suited to large volumes of fire than machine guns

@Iron Hands Terminator they rip and tear the Skinnies city in minutes. They only kill if they can't help it i.e. accidentally hit a populated area. Dizzy was KIA during extract and had a hole in his suit which indicates the Skinnies aren't slouch either. Love how the book details the drop. The capsules broken up during reentry and the pieces became chaffs to give the enemy radar operator headaches. The book MI are more to ODST rather than UNSC Army or Marine due to their training. 2000 guys in 187 guys graduated. That's some attrition rate and Rico and friends were told to find another job by the recruiter.

All things considered, I would say that weaponry needs upgrading. The standard rifle is good but ill suited to the spindly and well armoured arachnids. Now, more dedicated rifles will certainly prove more beneficial, possibly burst fire marksman's rifles. Next up ordnance, grenades and launchers. Portable nukes are good, phosphorous grenades are better for general use. Frag and explosive grenades are also good. Flashbangs would probably go some way as well to disorientate large groups of targets for easy pickings.

And really, the military requirement isn't the crux of the system anyway, it's more the idea that because exercise of political power is so important, it should only be given to the subsegment of society which has demonstrated a greater likelihood to be able to put the good of the nation above themselves.

Sadly the movie didn’t come close to the book. The Mobile Infantry in the book were in power armor that could handle near anything that hit is short of a nuke strike. George Lucas used the armored mobile infantry troopers as his vision for the imperial stormtrooper.

Well there is the Terran Federation of the Starship Troopers book and it's military, fighting the "spiders" and their allies. Then there is the United Citizen Federation of the Statship Troopers movies and it's military, fighting against the Bugs. They are two very different things with very different policies, technology, strategy and tactics, as well as rather different enemies. Their are military units referred to as Mobile Infantry by both as well, but beyond proper nouns applied to them their is no similarity. The Cap (short for capsule) Troopers, called Apes because their powered armor makes them look like gorillas, from the book, are part of the smallest military in human history based on percentage of population, is given the best technology the Terran Federation has at their finger tips and strives to leave no trooper behind no matter what. The Mobile Infantry of the movies United Citizens Federation is part of the largest military by any human standards ever and gives them no value at all, they are an air mobile force with few if heavy support weapons, equipment only slightly better than used by soldiers in the late 20th century, and use almost the same swarm tactics as the bugs they fight.

UNSC Military from Halo is likely to have TF MI inspiriation as they're mostly all volunteer force (ODST, Army & Marine) and the ODST is probably the closest one to the MI in the book.

Correction, joing the Federation military isn't the only way to become a citizen. Any federal service will grant citizenship, military is just the quickest way.

It would be nothing but swarming nano drones, relativistic speed missiles, and bio-agents. Normal citizens would not be at all inconvenienced by war. That's why all these movies show World War II tactics. Capital ships, fighters, landing craft, infantry, medics, etc.

Whoa whoa whoa, Klendathu was not a cluster because there wasn't a plan, or leadership. The initial LZ was hit, the bugs attacked as the securing force was moving into position. The soldiers weren't moving leaderless and at random. They were trying to get to their planned positions, but couldn't because of the bug counter attack. The NCOs seen all over the movie are constantly leading, motivating, and educating their soldiers. The only reason there were survivors was because of the leadership or the NCOs during the evacuation. The mobile infantry has very high standards for intelligence. The ability to use complex radio equipment, in direct fires, and to use nuclear rockets isn't something dumb people are allowed to do.

Not only that, mate, but the Pseudo-Arachnids had an obscene amount of Worker traffic through the area of operations which mislead the MI forces as it hadn't yet been hammered in (or maybe it hadn't been realised) that Workers and Warriors were virtually indistinguishable, and that behaviours were the only true identifier. Workers had arrived first and, naturally, slowed the Infantry's advance as they believed they were already in contact with OPFOR.

I don't know about the books, but in the movies, and almost anyone with an infantry background whill know, the mobile infantry is quite amateur. Put them against a modern infantry squad and they would be anihalated.

Films don’t portray it but UCF citizenship requirements is two years of any grueling messy service to the public. Hell if you’re a quadriplegic they’ll let you serve in some capacity the only way your not gonna be allowed is if you’re mentally deficient enough to not understand the oath.

Citizen is only more adventageous when you want to involve in politics. A civilian have all the basic rights and can be very successful and rich by, for example, starting businesses.
