Here is the thing though. Starship troopers isn't fascist in nature. It's a hyper meritocracy if you actually read the books. This is evidenced by the central phrase. "Something given has no value." It's well known that in fascist governments, the strong are given more power by their strong friends. In a meritocracy you earn everything you have. It looks fairly fascist I'd admit. But the original author hated fascism and sought to create a universe where the most capable are the leaders. Which by logical progression means a military structure. An institution based on the merits of it's individuals defines the members of it's hierarchy. It's also not very fascist by the trait of it's information sharing. Fascists governments love to control and spin information their way. Starship Troopers does almost none of that. They do have the typical slanting of a bias entity, but no government is free of that so we can't really put them down for it. Starship trooper's federation makes no qualms about showing soldiers ripped apart on global television. You know exactly what you're getting into when you join the Mobile Infantry. This transparency is unheard of in fascist regimes. The film comes off as fairly fascist, but this is likely because I don't think the director truly understood the source material. he thought it was fascist, and made a fascist movie out of the medium. Perverting it's original intent.
@rustedgreatsword4902
@rustedgreatsword4902 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know about unheard of. Many governments use war to show the horrors that the enemy commits which is a good motivation to fight them. Not saying its just for fascist mind you, but its not unheard of. Then again, showing your enemy as a heartless killing machine is something many would do to show how evil they are, more so in a police state. Don't know about the books though, do you know how many are worth reading?

Well I would call the federation a mix of political ideas, it has the traits of a meritocracy but it also resembles a fascist government, I mean the right to vote is given after service which is a way of pressuring that the government implies on it’s people, so for me the federation is a mixture

I see no issue here, in my country, only 40-60% (it varies, depends on type of elections) even bother to vote. Some people just dont care or they think they are part of some "protest". I always wondered why i should be able to influence future of my country and people just becouse reaching the age of 18. Then again, i tend to be kinda meritocratic and through 4 years working with all kinds of people, i really dont feel giving people stuff for free makes their life better, at all. @@agentc7020
@drakeford4860
@drakeford4860 5 жыл бұрын
@@agentc7020 I think it's worth noting that the key phrase is "Service guarantees Citizenship" as opposed to the fascistic chant, "Citizenships guarantees Service." In Starship Troopers, Heinlein essentially fused Roman Republicanism with modern Democratic and Classical Liberal principles. All people are granted universal civil liberties and protections, with the one exclusion being universal suffrage. Even this, however, is hardly inaccessible, as literally anyone can perform the service required to earn that right and responsibility. As the doctor states when Rico is being examined, the only way you can be turned down for service is if you're mentally unfit to give consent. It doesn't matter whether your poor, rich, deaf, blind, paraplegic, quadriplegic, or trapped in the body of a pidgeon, if you're willing to do work on behalf of society, then they will find a way and place for you to do it- and that certainly isn't limited to positions in the military. Furthermore, it is implied in both the film and the books that in regards to personal wealth and wellness, your best choice was to maintain your natural status in the private sector, away from the pesky responsibilities associated with citizenship. Citizenship then, was not a gift, but a burden- one to be taken up by those with a sense of moral responsibility and the drive to support and mold society for the future. There's certainly a debate to be had over whether such a system would actually work or whether it would even be feasible to construct (Heinlein himself seemed to believe such a system could only result from the rebuilding of society following the collapse of a system built on excessive social planning and a lack of public responsibility), but it honestly is devoid of fascism all together. Heinlein himself absolutely loathed the fascist. He was actually quite the classical liberal in fact, being a particularly avid anti-racist and a strong proponent of individualism. Heck, he was even a mentor Ray Bradbury, author of the incredibly anti-authoritarian "Fahrenheit 451." The man literally invented the term "paying it forward." Pretty incredible guy, on the whole, and certainly a far cry from any sort of fascist. Now there are communist in Starship Troopers: the bugs. That should pretty well make clear his stance on them.
@ianstradian
@ianstradian 5 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your break down if the geopolitical structure of the book... My issue with the film is the lack of power armor, the planet fall or landing technique when the armor was put into a case that burned off during re-entry, we missed out on some very cool stuff. Then the other race of beings that seemed to have made a truce with the bugs, no mention of them in the films. The films never show how the hero thought he had lost his father only to meet his father towards the end of the book. Oh and Hollyweird loves a good love story which is not in the books. All in all I enjoyed the movie but the book and film share a title and a few lines,,, that’s it.

Except it isn't fascistic, people are allowed to own firearms, were allowed to own businesses, allowed to sell to who they wanted to. They could travel where ever they wanted to. A prime example of how non fascist they were is the extremeist mormons who set up a colony on a planet they thought had no intelligent life. They told the Federation they wanted to leave and the Federation said ok no hard feelings. The Federation is I would say the perfect form of Constitutional Republic. As a civilian you are free to come and go as you please. Citizens are capable of serving in a public position because they served their civilians by putting themselves in danger. Their responsibility if they survive they have a say in what goes on.

Starship Troopers isn't fascist, its a Roman style Republic. Also the bugs aren’t fascist they are communist, this can be seen in how bugs are equal. There are no soldier bugs leading other soldier bugs they are equal and do not operate outside of their Caste. Robert Heinlein even writes how effective the bugs are in war because they evolved to be purely communist. This is actually the first video you made which I have disliked.

The differeny types of bugs got into the film only because that's what normal people know from returning soldiers stories. Not much more than that 8:37 Noone can do that without a notice. Definitely without humans (that got to the other side of a galaxy in their conquest) noticing. And their anti-asteroid defended were turned off in the perfect moment. The film shows "official story" from the government, for better effect they showed the ship knowing about the rock but failing to tell others.
