@@DudeBro07 Not sure what your context is but in two of the 4 departments (ignoring coastes and those wierd space-fucks) in the American Airforce and Army, you are a Sar-gent or Sarnt, in order. Even our first line (E-7) SNCO's still get the same title from everyone E-4 or below. The only exception I know of first hand is those marines with "gunny", shar't (aka first sergeant or "shirt" in the USAF) is a special role, and gets it's own title, but everyone above E-7 air side is a Senior or Chief. To break it down USAF side, the Chief (E-8) is the head of the enlisted side; the guy who's seen it all and will keep the Commander on a steady course through his experience. The Senior's are the salty grandpa's; Their job is to make sure the NCO's are good father's/uncle's to the junior enlisted and keep them from letting those "dumb young fucks" from ruining their lives. Masters (E-7): are those Tsgt's (of which I will explain later) who both fulfill the role of the prior two ranks together. Tech Sergeants (E-6): are the weird uncle who knows a lot of shit about a lot of things. Cool to hang out with but is so focused on his craft he isn't really a good mentor on day to day life. Like that family member your father call's in to fix his water heater last minute; who is great at that stuff, but unfortunately chugs a 1/4 rack of natty-daddys and gives some inappropriate advice for 12yo you. SSgt's are the Daddies and Mommies of the USAF. We were dumb enough to make some mistakes that made uncle sam think we were ready to be a role model to a bunch of dumb hormonal teenagers out of HS and college. A1C's and SRA's are the older brother's of the airforce, the idiots who are still around via book smarts, luck, street smarts or a combination of above. They will either move on to be dumb adoptive parents *cough* I mean NCO's or just skate by and get out in 3-4 years. Finally are the airmen, (the E-1&E-2). Basically these boys are to be taken up by one of us "daddies" and turned from some naive idiot to a function person in what is the real world.

The most impressive moment for Michael Nantz (Battle LA) that shows who he is, was a commonly overlooked scene at the end. Not the shooty shooty end. The very end of the movie. He and what's left of his platoon finally regroup with the rest of the military after completing their mission. It's such a miracle that they survived through what killed basically everyone else, and they've made such a contribution to the war effort, that the commander wants to rotate them off the front lines. Their reward for heroism is to survive; given the casualty rate, all or most of them would die if they went back to the front. But instead of taking off his gear, Nantz starts restocking his ammo, and all his men follow his example. They refuse to stay on the sidelines while their brethren are still fighting in the city. They went through hell because they had to. They went back in because it's who they were.

Sergeant Major and Master Chief Petty Officer are equivalent in rank. Navies use the term petty officer for their sergeant ranks
@duddude3215 жыл бұрын
He's only MCPO until 3. After 3 he is posthumously promoted to MCPOotN. It is literally the highest Enlisted rank they have. Even the lowest Commissioned Officer technically outranks him, but if you aren't part of the Admirality/Generals and you don't listen to what he has to say you'd best be prepared for the aforementioned Admirality/Generals to chew you up and spit you out. The UNSC doesn't give that rank freely. IIRC he was willingly demoted back to MCPO after H4.

I like your picks. Sergeant Zim (sorry if I misspell that) is by far my favorite. People like him are the best mentors. They're tough as nails and though at times they seem unfair, it's their training and mentoring that prepares you for what's ahead. Plus as you've mentioned, he was willing to demote himself to join the fight. That shows his commitment and care for his fellow recruits and the human race as a whole. He's not a show off or looking for medals.

There needs to be a *worst commanding officers* list. With several different categories: *Getting their own men killed needlessly* - the Jedi lead that category, the CO at Klandathu had severely faulty intelligence. *Battle planning that sucked* - Different from above, strategic incompetence. That includes being unwilling to adapt to new developments or information. General Brigham from Edge of Tomorrow rates high in this category. *Falling to Inspire their troops.* - Once again the Jedi, if they weren't leading genetically modified troops programmed to serve they would've had a rebellion, the CO at Klandathu was actually good at inspiring troops, Lieutenant Gorman of the Colonial Marines wasn't. *Combat ability.* - This redeems the Jedi, sort of. But they didn't consider that their own troops couldn't match that combat level. Most of the others were equal to regular soldiers so don't particularly suck - special bonus points must be given for those that detonate explosives that kill enemy troops, redeeming themselves in death.

Getting their own men killed needlessly=> admiral Holdo. She had droïd, but let good captain die pointlessly on their ship. Her own incompetence lead directly to the death of a lot of good resistance personnel. Battle planning that sucked=>admiral Holdo, because she tough the best plan in her situation was to go straight, do nothing, let her ship getting mauled down and strand all the people left on a salt planet with only a base that didn't see maintenance or ressupply for decade. Failing to inspire their troop=>admiral Holdo, since her disastrous leadership skills and behavior directly led to a mutiny.

Seriously only these lads? I can point to over a hundred thousand sergeants of grander honour across the entire imperium. Hell just look to the Tanith First and Only if you want a good dozen of them. Or what about Colour Sergeant Krell, Creeds best friend and most trusted soldier and ally, to the point that even Krell gave his life to save his friend during the fall of Cadia - one second: CADIA STANDS! THE PLANET BROKE BEFORE THE GUARD! - and even then that doesn’t take in those of the Adeptus Sororitas, Astartes, Navy and so on. Hell Sergeant Harker is a complete badass and legend amongst the guard. Serving in the same Regiment as the hard ass Colonel Iron Hand Straken, the man continues to show off still by lugging a heavy bolter around like it’s nothing - a two man weapon for your basic guardsmen. Please do an expansion to this video so we can add a hundred more deserving veterans to this list. And even then, I’d love to see you guys run through just a single video talking about all the Heroes of the Imperial Guard like: ollanius pius, Ibram Gaunt, Ciaphas Cain “HERO OF THE IMPERIUM”, etc

Not to mention, power armour, if it can take a hit from a dedicated anti-tank weapon and, keep the soldier inside alive, that's hard. Then do not get me STARTED on the implantation and, creation process of a Space Marine. Not to mention the indoctrination into a warrior/religious cult. Did I miss anything? Cool video. I was a Sgt. in the U.S. Army in the 101st Air Assault. I wasn't a hero, I just did my job to the best of my ability. Great List. One suggestion though, I know civilians tend to use the term "soldier" as a catch all when talking about military men, but NEVER call a Marine a Soldier. We are two different types of attack dogs. Like Pit bulls and German Shepherds.

Master Chief John 117 is a Warrant Officer, NOT a Sergeant. He should not be in the video or on the poll. His inclusion is not only wrong but takes votes from all the other characters on this video that actually ARE Sergeants.
@lordcastellan47355 жыл бұрын
Master Chief is a shortening of Master Chief Petty Officer which is an enlisted rank in the Navy. The rough equivalent to an army or marine corps sergeant major. The warrant officer ranks are WO1, CWO2, CWO3, CWO4 and CWO5 or warrant officer 1 then chief warrant officer 2 through 5.

The problem w/most military movies is that Hollywood seldom gets things even remotely close to reality. It's odd as as other countries film industries do get it right especially like South Korea or the Finns and the US has plenty of retirees/ex military available to get this shit straight but Hollywood just flails around in it's stereotypes. While not mil sci fi, Black Hawk Down got it pretty straight. Battle LA I think got it best for mil sci fi, they actually had a pretty solid platoon TOE and showed things like how fragmented/cut off units would likely still be giving the enemy fits (the National Guard infantry/armor units, AF forward air controllers...somehow she was w/out her comms tho?). Trying to adapt to new situations, failures of weapons etc, Battle LA showed the flexibility modern armies demand of their personnel/NCOs.

Sgt avery johnson (of HALO), was CLEARY a ripoff of Sgt. Apone from (again), Aliens 1986.
@danielhaire66775 жыл бұрын
One correction from a reader of the official novels. SGM Johnson of HALO was a SPARTAN I. Master Chief was a SPARTAN-II. The major differences were that depth of the experimental enhancements. Perhaps the most important thing when dealing with the Flood for Johnson, was then the neural enhancements actually created a nervous disorder that basically scrambled his nervous signals in such a fashion that the Flood couldn't get a hold on him.
