How to Swag a Light Fixture

This video demonstrates a simple method of relocating a poorly positioned light fixture. This example is a dining room light fixture located in the center of a passageway instead of over the table. In this example we use a swag lamp kit to facilitate the move.

Very helpful video! As someone who has been electrocuted before (once as a child playing hide and go seek by a spliced power cord, and once from a water heater, OUCH) , my heartrate always increases and nervousness ensues whenever I watch someone do electrical work. It's involuntary! Haha. I know you said the power was off before you took that plate off, but I feel like it should be plastered on your edited video. Lol. It's such common sense, but I'm sure it'll be lost on someone! Thanks for the content. We bought a 1900 farmhouse and the chandelier over the dining table is about 3 feet from where it needs to be. Lol!

Did you purchase a new ground wire that runs together with SPT-1 wire from the light all the way to the crossbar in the ceiling? Wish you had shown that in your video too.

It goes to show you did not watch the entire video. He says that the ground did not come with the swag kit he purchased so he had to get one. Also it's made of zinc.

Where did you find the right ground wire to make the extension work? I've looked at all the big brick and mortar stores and they don't carry it. So, maybe put up a link of the right ground wire. Thanks!

Hard to find for sure. You can always peel apart a lamp cord and use just a single as the ground wire.

I train dogs for a living. I used to build computers and program them. To be honest, I am going to have to watch this a couple of times. It's more complex than installing a ceiling fan, or popping out a motherboard, and setting up a RAID array. For me, training a wild wolf would be considerably easier.

Approximately how much would it cost to have an electrician install another electrical into the spot where you want the light so that you would not need to swag the light to get it where it belongs, then put in a canister light in the spot where the light was hung originally?

I have seen some sconces I like, but I do not want to put holes in the wall and have someone go into the attic to put wiring down to the wall as I do no own my home. I would much prefer to swag them, but I am not sure that is possible. Thank you!

You can if you do it properly. Not pretty, but really no different that a floor or table lamp, just that you are hanging it on the wall.

If the hooks are into the wood truss structure, then yes! I think most pool table fixtures have 2 hooks to suspend them, at least any that I've noticed while looking up and wondering how I missed such an easy shot!

I have a pool table light that is wired. I wanted to move pool table a few feet to one side but then the wired pool table light will be off. can I use this kit to move pool table light too. I have an outlet in ceiling. How do I wire this kit to poool table?

Mostly excellent. I wish you would have showed us how you spliced the wires. You showed us the end of the splicing, but not the whole process. I'm not confident in understanding the terms that you seem to assume we all know what it means: negative, power wire, neutral etc. Is it as simple as splicing same colors to each other?

The hardest part of this job, rewiring the fixture, is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY using the Wire Extender from Seagull. Google it. Super simple. Terry now wishes he had it! LOL
