I work on small engines. I always shop vac then pressure wash first before the air gun comes out. I drain the gas tank. Plug the plug. Drain the oil. Its cost effective in the long run. Makes doing the rest way easier.

Thanks very much for this video. Very informative, appreciate the tips about tapping for mounting bolts and anti-seize on the pulley bolt and shaft. Doing a Kohler Courage swap tomorrow so I like to have a list of steps to make it go smoothly. Seems like it may be a little quicker to swap the exhaust pipes before dropping in the new one, leaving the bolts a little loose to make slipping them into the muffler easy.

It's too bad, people spend a ton of money on new mowers, and don't take care of them. I have a 2006 Yardman 18hp B&S, and it still runs like new. Even after storing for the winter, it starts right up every spring. Only thing I've ever had to fix on it, was to repaint the deck.👍

Even today's Chinese mowers, snowblowers, etc., will last a long time if properly maintained and not too badly abused. I bought a cheap Poulan push mover about 9 years ago for $150 new. I've hit rocks and stumps with it many times and it still works great. I watch the oil and usually change it every year. I sharpen the blade with a table top power grinder. After sitting all winter, the Poulan usually starts by the 3rd pull. After that, 1st pull.

Thank you for making these videos. I have a craftsman dlt 3000 with a 20hp Kohler. It’s going on 15 years old but could be confused with brand new. Only thing major I’ve had to do to it (didn’t have to but I want it to last another 15 years) is restore the deck. I pulled it last summer and sand blasted it, primed and painted it, and replaced trundles and the glide plate that was starting to notch. Deck looks factory new now again. Can you tell I’m proud? Lol

While few know that was the original IH displacement too, they would make terrible mower engines as they are not fan-cooled and run hot. It's been done of course but engines like the Honda CX500 make much more practical tractor engines. Much love for my 1973 74" S&S stroker but it won't find a home in a mower. If someone wanted to do it using the stock clutch and replacing the mower clutch (on a REAL yard tractor) with a PTO slipper clutch or a plain coupling would be the way to go.

The tip on using a 3/8"-16 tap was crucial for me. Saved me a lot of agony. Took me about 2h(ish) to do the engine swap. Considering the B&S mechanic wanted $1200 to fix my mower and B&S sold me an engine for $850, it was a huge save for me. Now to rebuild the other one and figure out what's wrong with it.

Ignore the trolls. Your video is fine. The only thing I worry about is the positive side of the battery should be disconnected to avoid the battery exploding if the Positive lead you removed from the starter became grounded by accident. The quick oil change fitting I would remove and use plug, makes oil changes messy, but prevents the oil from coming out like it did for your client. I assume your client in your video must really like the tractor to spend that much ($1000 in 2017) on a replacement 24 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine. I assume same engine but rated one horsepower less due to delta in how power was measured. I recently priced out how much it would be today to replace my year 2003 GT5000 lawn tractor and was astonished to see how much prices have increased over the years. I paid $1600 in year 2003 for the GT5000. Today to replace with Husqvarna 25 horsepower engine with 48-inch cut is $3600 via Lowes’s home centers if you opt for the Kawasaki engine and about $700 less if you opt for the Kohler engine for the same lawn tractor. Kawasaki engines and parts are expensive so I would opt for the Kohler engine if was my decision which engine to use as replacement for my GT5000. My 2003 Craftsman GT5000 with 48-inch deck is remarkably like the lawn tractor you have in your video I think was made by Husqvarna. My tractor has Kohler Command 25 Horsepower CV730-0017. I live in southeastern Florida and like having so much power with a three blade 48 inch cut that does not bog down when the grass is high in the summer months. The quick oil change fitting on my engine has opened and lost all the engine oil, but I heard the change in the engine sound and shut down before my engine was destroyed. When I bought the lawn tractor in year 2003, I had people tell me to remove the quick oil change fitting, but I did not listen until I nearly destroyed my engine. I see many videos internet posted where the engines failed and broke piston rods because the quick oil change fitting came open at the wrong time. Most people part out the lawn tractors when the engines fail because the bits and parts are worth plenty. For example, the Husqvarna engine bolts in your video production are special and I just paid $6 each plus shipping. The Husqvarna 15 mm spacer that goes under the big movable tension pully under the engine I misplaced and had to pay another $6 plus shipping or try to find a spacer at the hardware stores, so I used a socket as a spacer until the Husqvarna spacer arrived. Recently (3/16/2021) my engine sump oil seal failed and the engine was on fire because I saw the smoke when the seal came out and the engine oil hit the very hot muffler, but I tried to drive the lawn tractor back to the house. It caught fire not far from my tool shed and I was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. I replaced the oil seal and coated the melted wires with paintable vinyl tape until I can buy and install a new wiring harness. The Briggs and Stratton engine in your video looks very much like my Kohler Command 25 Horsepower CV730-0017. I have my lawn tractor back in regular service now and I do not see any major flaws in your video, so good job and thanks for sharing. Dennis Jon Sytsma Homestead Florida sytsmad@bellsouth.net

The older I get the heavier these engines weigh. I know because my back lets me know. A few years ago a guy sold me a 17.5 Twin I/C Briggs. He said it was a good running engine. Started it up and it seemed to run fine. So the other day I put it on my mower. Checked the gas oil and tires. When I went to cut the grass it seemed ok, except for the big puffs of blue smoke. After about 30 min or so I it stalled out. When I tried to start it, it was as if it were locked up. Did not want to spin over. So the next day it spun over by hand just like what you would expect. I bumped the switch and it started right up. Got it back to the house and filled it up with oil and checked the gas. Before I started it I made sure the oil was at the top of the line. 30 min of run time it was below the bottom line. Odd thing when I went to start it this time it sounded as if something metal was bumping around inside. After its running it seems to run fine. Not sure if there is anything I can do for the engine, except get another one. I did try Lucas Oil seemed to help a little but every 30 to 45 min I have to put more in. I think I got screwed on this deal.

I have a MTD yard machine with a briggs twin II that runs great, well maintained but the tractor is falling apart and I’m tired of putting money into it and it doesn’t handle well and cuts badly cocked to one side of belly, tie rods shot, etc, etc. I obtained a john deere LT133 for free but had to put several parts on it to run properly. The deere rides like a cadillac and cuts super straight, handles well with little flex on hills but the new carb keeps flooding due to trash somewhere in the fuel line. I replaced all rubber lines from tank to fuel pump all except for the metal fuel line that runs under the inspection cover on top of engine (I think i’m getting rust from that metal line.) I could replace it yes but the Koehler engine that’s in the deere doesent have much power when I get it running and I’d love to swap that briggs twin II into it. It looks like crankshaft diameters match so I would swap the engine from MTD to the deere and most likely all the electronics from the MTD as well. Not sure if fuel system will work as the deere tank is under the drivers seat and in the MTD it’s higher than the engine mounted to the firewall area. I’ve never done a swap on a mower but several on muscle cars, trucks, keeps, etc so I can figure most things out. If anyone has done this please hit me up. By the way the hood in the JD is broken in a million pieces so I’m not using a hood anymore so clearance is not an issue. I’ll have plenty of room for a turbo now.....kidding.

Jeff - thanks for the video. I'm going to have to get my engine replaced. Mower is 15 years old and I have already lost two valve rods into the engine. Always the right side - facing the front. Really should have the engine broken down to retrieve the rods and hopefully no further damage is done. Will have to have it done - can't do myself. Thinking that is might be better to have new engine verses buying a new rider. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

It sounds like the initial issue was carburetor related. If you replaced the carb with a cheapo replacement that may be the problem now. If you still have the old carburetor. just clean and rebuild it.

The quick oil change fittings destroy engines all the time and the owner is blamed. I would remove the fitting and use a pipe plug like in the old days so the oil does not come out of the engine in the middle of a job.

The Husqvarna engine mounting bolts he removed are special and are self tapping. I had to buy one recently for my Craftsman GT 5000. I visited several shops until someone at a lawn mower shop told me I had to go online and buy the Husqvarna bolts. I found the part number in my GT5000 book that came with my lawn tractor in year 2003. The GT5000 book is online for free with all the part numbers for the GT5000 that is very similar to the lawn tractor in this video.
