As I sit here, on my sofa, wearing my London 2019 tee (good memories) I couldn't think of anything worse. Fair play to those that can complete such a feat! I've found my balance; marathon a year if my body allows. In my opinion a DNS is better than a DNF.

I am a frequent racer -- almost every weekend, but I keep the races fairly modest as far as distance (5K / 10K). I've done the longer race streaks too -- having done 9 fulls in 365 days and racing half marathons every weekend for 8 weeks. The closest full marathon I've done to each other is 3 weeks. I don't recommend it if you are trying for time. I was getting progressively slower with each race and it was humbling to see my times go into the trash. Your advice / training routine is spot on and pretty much the approach I took. Love your channel and I hope Rick is making a speedy recovery.

I wouldn't really think of a six-week gap as back-to-back races. I would think like two races in the same weekend, or maybe one week apart. Obviously depends on the length of the race, I've never done a full Marathon. I have done two Sprint triathlons in the same weekend.

I once did a competition here in Australia where we did 7 marathons in 7 days. We were part of a team where we started in Hobart, flew to Melbourne, then Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane Adelaide and finally Perth. We'd run the race, get a massage from the team masseuse, eat, get on a plane, then the team physio would stretch us out followed by an ice bath and more food. Definitely a once in a life experience and I'm never doing that again.

The key for me was mentioned right at the start of the video - arrive at the first Marathon as close to 100% as possible. I did a Marathon each month in 2019 and thought I could use the first few events to build my fitness. Instead I got progressively slower over the first 9 months until my body finally got to grips with the challenge and my times started improving.
@Kelly_Ben3 жыл бұрын
That gives me hope, thanks! I haven't been speedy since school, but training for a 50k, I feel like a sloth on ice! It's been about 9 months, so fingers crossed I'll speed up soon!

@@Kelly_Ben I'm sure somebody said about running Ultras that to run (relatively) fast, first you must learn to run slow. That definitely rings true for me and was the biggest thing I took from that year. Ran 50k for the first time earlier this year and couldn't have done it without that experience behind me.

This video was really useful. I'm in a position that I think a lot of people are in that a load of races were pushed to autumn. The Brighton Marathon is my first marathon and my A goal and I am so excited to finally get to do it. I recently ran Hadrian's Wall over 4 days (74 miles in total). I found it really beneficial to have a recovery routine after each long run in training that I then took directly into the event. I'd have a protein shake, do some gentle yoga and also a gentle walk after every long run in training and replicated that every day doing the Wall. I was also surprised (and probably shouldn't have been) that days 2-4 I needed much more food to get through the run, and by the end really couldn't face what I brought, so should have had more variety. A few weeks after the Wall, I then did my first ultra, and in between I basically did nothing, to make sure I'd given my legs enough rest, which probably wasn't the best preparation, but I got through it! Now I'm thinking, what next? Maybe all the way round the Isle of Man? 🤔

Well done Pete! Thanks so much for sharing your recovery tips - these are definitely key, especially when you're doing multi-day events!

I Did my first ultra in August this year, the Spey Side Ultra 36 miles. Five weeks later I completed the London Marathon and survived to tell the tail. My approach was to survive the ultra and then go for a time at London. I would say I did a normal ish lead up to the ultra in training. In between the two was the challenge for me. What I did was divide the time I had in to two, so two and a half weeks. In the first two and a half weeks I reversed my taper and the last bit of training. For the second two and a half weeks reversed the plan again and tapered down for London. I did not make my desired time for London but who cares. I would agree with the video that you need to really focus on recovery. Next year I plan three ultras and the Loch Ness Marathon.

Got in the Berlin Marathon for 2020. We all know what happened. Spot was moved forward to 2021 and then I got in the Chicago marathon, meaning I would've had to run both this year. Seeing as it looks very unlikely I'll be running either because of travel restrictions, it looks like I'll be doing them both in 2022 (can't postpone indefinitely). I'll just be sure to stay away from the London marathon lottery... I don't want to tempt/provoke lady luck 😂

I was running 20-22 mile long runs each weekend whilst training for a virtual marathon last winter - so I believe I could run two with a week in between. 🤔 But I think I could only do it by running at long run pace. My big problem has been picking up the pace over long distances when needed. I've been out for three months injured, and just running one at a fast pace is my goal this year. I'm getting older, so I have a more cautious outlook these days. Besides, marathons aren't like 5ks...you can't just go out again in a couple of days if you screw it up! 😄

Frankly, I am wondering if I am hardy enough to do the latter event from fresh. I would have an ice bath except for 1 tiny detail: it involves having a bath... In ICE! Which is frankly (with no offence to anyone) COMPLETELY MENTAL! I have Southampton Marathon (September 5th) then off-road Marathon (12/9) - I'm treating it as a long run. A week later I'm trying The Great(sic) Bristol Half - for speed work, then it's October 3rd London, well as long as I have a negative Lateral Flow Test for Saturday expo, and remember to take it to the run because of 'random checks'... I'll leave those facts hanging in the air! 🤔

Hi, one Question: Up until what point in the taper (I will do 4 weeks of taper starting next week) would you still do a weekly hard session (or 2)? As for back2back Marathons, I have Vienna City Marathon coming up mid september and then I might spontaneously do another in late October. Haven't decided yet 🌝

Thanks for watching Joen! Personally I would keep doing some tougher sessions until about 2 weeks out - but those last two weeks are just about ticking the legs over. Hope this helps 😊 - Mary

Do the same principles apply to half marathons? I have one I'm training for in late October, and then a local half in the beginning of December I will run at an easy pace to support the local event. That leaves 5 weeks in between, should I rest for a week, train for 3 weeks and then taper for a week?

Thanks for watching Dan! Yes, for a Half marathon resting for a week, training for 3 and tapering for one sounds spot on! Good luck with your training 😊
