watching you is inspiring, I am in the middle of doing just my base as I am starting to run after a 6 month break. I was a 14:33 5k runner in college and this will be my 1st marathon on Oct 3rd of 2024. I will be 61. I am going to take it really slow getting ready and doing heart rate training for my base for the next 3 months as I watched the other video on your channel and I have done the 180-my age and I am working hard to keep it at that and still run a distance my goal for the first month is to get 20 miles a week for the first 2 weeks then the next 2 get to 30 miles a week then slowly move up from there, all the while watching my HR. Thank you and your channel for such great content!!!

Yeah, a word of caution here. I've followed my Garmin on short sprint runs I do on-road and ended up with a muscle strain because I pushed off awkwardly or had to make a sudden turn to avoid hitting something in the way. For me just finding a park fits the bill best and doing consistent loops in the park is a great way to measure progress more accurately.
@jimc50003 жыл бұрын
yeah I totally agree with this...no doubt best place of all for the intervals is the track, I'm quite lucky in that living right out in the sticks there are country roads that 99% of the time there is nothing on so belting out the 400/800''s is always OK...just getting a treadmill sorted actually for the winter so I can really focus on the intervals whatever the weather and with no danger...have a lot of misgivings about moving to some treadmill work after a year and a half on the trails and roads but hey Mo Farah reckons its the way to go and who I am to argue with that legend :)

@@mr.onbekend7959 it would have been a long run for you once upon a time and will be for a lot of people watching this video. As I'm sure you know, you don't just start doing 80 minute runs, you have to build up to that and maybe beyond.
@runningchannel3 жыл бұрын
That's great, Colin! Thanks for sharing 😊
@crowbar_the_rogue3 жыл бұрын
@@colinlittlewood9613 From what I know about the science of running, 80 minutes isn't too long because until around 15 kilometers the body has no trouble finding fuel. It's after that that the suffering starts. Though I can't claim to be speaking from experience.
@colinlittlewood96133 жыл бұрын
@@crowbar_the_rogue My point is it is all relative. I've done 22 Marathons so for me 80 minutes isn't a daunting prospect, but there was a time when I found running for 20 minutes hard and running for 80 minutes would have been unthinkable, even with perfect fuelling, because my base fitness was too low. Almost everyone can progress from where I was then to where I am now, but it is not an easy process and certainly not a quick one either.

Impressive goal, Sarah! Keep it up!Long runs are actually my favorite workout, because it allows me to go and explore, run roads and trails where I would otherwise not get to and discover new, beautiful areas. My favourite piece in my kit are my shoes. Having a good comfortable pair of running shoes also helps me to stay confident on my run. I love and enjoy long runs. Definitely helps to run on beautiful Florida, USA trails. Much better than running on city roads.

Good to see your progress, Sarah. I'm doing the VLM in October so in the same fight you are. For short intervals I pick a park with a loop in it around 400-800 meters, the park loop I run has a Strava segment so that captures my performances (so long as you know where the start is!). it takes me 15 minutes to get to the park which is a nice warm up, I do 6-8 hard laps with a rest lap in-between and then do an easy 15 minutes home to cool down.

Loving this channel from NY, finding it helpful to stay on top of my training especially the hard stuff like strength and long runs! Keep it up

I have just finished couch to 5k and started doing park runs. So far I’m enjoying running with people and I look forward to start my weekend with Parkrun. I have been kindly gifted a pair of CloudX for Christmas and it’s my favourite pair to run with.Lovely video to watch x

So inspiring Sarah! I play audio workouts during my long runs- helps mix it up a bit! When they run out I work on counting out my cadence until I get home.

Great work on the training! I like to listen to an audio book on my long run. Makes me look forward to my run so I can get back to my book!

I hate strength days (and the idea of them) but can appreciate their importance. Watching this got me thinking to wear my run kit to get in the right (and same) mindset for strength as I do running. Thank you!

My favourite bit of running kit has to be my compression sleeves. Having suffered terrible shin splints last year they’ve really made a difference after a long recovery.

What a great week 🙌 Sarah you are really looking fit and strong- well done! My favourite piece of running kit has to be my shorts, decathlon 2in1...they are brilliant for long runs, no chaffing and so comfy! Look forward to more running updates 😀

You and Anna make marathon training seem so achievable! I've picked a BHAG which I have my sights set on for my birthday present to myself in six months time, and plan to follow your footsteps and use this training plan to set myself up for success. Not sure what I should do for my mental game on the long runs either, I'll have to keep watching you for more ideas! My favourite piece of my kit is body glide! As someone who is prone to chafing on my thighs it's been a real game changer!

running Belfast on 3rd October after it was cancelled last year. Ran 18 miles this morning, my longest run yet and a little further than I got before the marathon was cancelled last year! Feet up for the rest of the day 😁 Good luck!

You’re well on your way to Amsterdam Sarah! I totally believe you’ll get to that finish, and it’s such an amazing one, in the Olympic Stadium. 😍 I’m currently training for Rotterdam Marathon, Oct, 24th. My favorite marathon kit has my first name on it. Sometimes it’s only in small print on the Bib, but with big letters on my marathon singlets everyone along the course knows what my name is. And it helps! Complete strangers cheering me on: go Kim! Looking strong Kim! Yayyyy Kim! They probably don’t even realize how helpful that is in the second part of the race. I’d love to enter for the Mizuno kit, could use something new now that I’m the not so proud owner of a few extra lockdown pounds. 😜 Working on it, but boy, some of my tights and shirts are really tight atm. 😩

i joined a running club and now can always find someone to do the long runs with this always helps as so many people training for a marathon you can normally find a running partner

I am so pleased you said you struggled with the mental part, I have the same around 11 mile mark where my brain just gives up and demands I head home right away

Well done Sarah! So excited to see another episode of your Marathon training! I'd encourage you to put your interval workout onto your watch - I'm pretty technically challenged but I googled it and followed the instructions I found. It makes it so much easier and instead of thinking about the time, you can focus on form and pace until you get the beep/buzz.

I never listen to anything while running, and I honestly find that the clear headspace, thoughts and ideas that flow during a long run helps me get through it. The other thing that is really helpful with long runs is running with other people. I do lots of my long runs with a group of runners from my club. Company can be very helpful!

I enjoy the peace and quiet also while out. If I do put something on, I keep the volume very low, and its just different background noise and not making me actually listen.

My Nike zoom shoes are my fav. I'm not big into running gear as it's pretty expensive where I live but a good pair of shoes goes so far! I'll never forget the first time I ran in proper shoes, I felt like I was flying! Good luck with the training. You got this!

Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Sarah! For your intervals, have you tried to create a custom workout on your Garmin Connect, the watch can thru the bips/vibrations what you need to do next. As for long runs, for me, I adopt a grateful and thankful attitude, thinking if those who can’t. All the best!

I have several pieces of favourite running kit! The best thing I got recently was Brooks Ghost 17 shoes and the trouble I’ve been having with blisters and Achilles tendinitis have disappeared I had with my old daily shoes! Wow. I also love my Saucony Speeds.

We’ll done Sarah, keep going like this and you’ll breeze it in. I’ve tried music, podcasts, singing. The best for me when I can’t get in that “zone” is just finding rhythm in my breathing, and just settling into it. Nothing exciting, but it works.
