May I ask why it’s called a Da Vinci’s Helicopter Puzzle? The reason I ask is because Leonardo Da Vinci died a few hundred years before the first helicopter came to be.

They were locked together with metal dowel pins. The dowel holes have some clearance and are deep enough that the rotation allows inertia to move the dowels deeper until it disengaged the locked pieces.

it kind of feels unfair, i have never seen one of these before. im watching like what the hell does shaking it have to do with anything? how would i have known there were metal dowels in there, or if i knew, that they could slide back out of the way.

The parts is kept together with wooden pins. They unlock becouse of centrifugal force when you spin it. Like I said, I used about 9 hours to solve it.

It's is not easy to solve if you don't know the trick and never solved a similar puzzle. But I have a lot of comments here saying they solved the puzzle before it was even designed 🤣

There's a dowel inside of the piece that passes through the hole on each. The back and forth action slide the dowels out of the holes allowing the piece to disconnect. You can slightly see the dowel when you set one of the pieces down as it sticks out about half a cm

there is a little wooden bolt that keeps the parts together. While shaking by frame, bolt moves and unlock the parts.

There are pins in the puzzle, which lock into the other piece’s holes, but centrifugal force can displace them so that you can separate the two pieces.

There’s a wooden cylinder that holds them together and when you spin them the cylinder hides in one of them wooden sticks. To assemble it back you need to wiggle it again

It sounded like metal. I have a box that was similar, when you shake it in a certain way, a metal cylinder would move (like this puzzle) and unlock a drawer ... there was more after that, but it's irrelevant.

Mechanical stuff is so fun to analyze. There's no magic there like a code or anything. Just hidden little pegs and pieces with specific shapes, sizes, holes and angles that make them follow the law of physics to fit and work together.

there's no fun in frustration of figuring this crap out! Its like saying, oh cancer is fun to figure it out, your try now. It can be frustrating as hell, to the point of breaking the parts. The fun part is seeing the guy show the secret/method. thats relieving, like a big zit popping on a face.

They have wooden pegs that go through the holes, locking them in place. But when you spin it, the pegs slide back enough to clear the holes and release the wooden pieces.

Simple, locked together with pins. The momentum is kept by each pin, which slotted into holes on the side of each stick. You can just barely see one of them peeking out in the last shot.

They have a dowel that slides when you spin it back and forth. You can see the piece when you set them down after taking them out

That's a really easy puzzle. Your video made it look like the square was capturing the blades but knowing there is something else holding the blades together, that's the first obvious thing to try.

Those parts were locked together by a round peck which has to go through the round hole in one of the piece. So when you shake or rotate left and right, the round peck goes backwards inside the other piece thus unlocking the pieces.

Dowels slide into the holes down the shaft of the interlocking pieces. Shaking makes the dowels run down each shaft, disengaging from those holes. Then the interlocking pieces can come apart at the angle of the square holder. Nice 😊

My grandfather gave me Da Vinci’s helicopter puzzle right before he passed I was 12-13 took me a few days not really trying to solve it but messing with it before I completed it and it started my puzzle journey! It’ll always hold a spot in my heart

some people are naturally gifted at this sort of thing, a few have stumped me, for a little while. maybe some of the comments are genuine? its annoying when people say "this puzzle is mater level" also. i much prefer been given like 9 single pieces of a puzzle and asked how they go together, rather than how to separate.

Yea, a small round piece, inside the two main pieces, that locks the two pieces together by the holes, and can be moved by gravity, by tilting the whole thing

It's 2 rods inside. If you just turn the puzzle one rod will go to the bottom while the other will still lock the pieces together. This you have to spin it so that each rod go to the far side of the piece leaving the space for removing the pieces.

When we spin it the G force would pull away the circular cylinder from the middle of the sticks to the sides (of course while in the middle it will block it from coming out) and would allow them to fall apart

I got this as a Christmas present one year, I spent days trying to figure it out and eventually got so frustrated that I threw it on the ground and it shook in sutch a way that it opened… that’s how I figured it out.

In between the square shape cut is a loose pin through the holes of each wood that holds the wood parts together.. Spinning it draws the Pins backwards Making it free to be loose apart.

There are wood poles within each wooden stick, and they serve as the locking mechanism. Shaking the contraption jostles the locking poles out of the way, allowing the locked sticks to separate and be pulled out.

I noticed those holes have in line with it hidden along the rest of the wood's body which can lock into its holes by simple gravity toward the holes and unleasing the locks by centrifugal forces left and right and it can be removed out the square frame.

I love the puzzles he has because I have never ever seen anything like them before and it reminds me of something my Dad and I would have fun trying to figure out together. I might be cheating if I had Dad on my team. He majored in aerospace engineering. I wish I had done more fun things like this with him when I had the chance. I love you Dad.

You could see there were wooden pins going through the holes. So the centrifugal force pulled them out of the holes and further into the wooden blocks. I would have never thought of spinning it though.

@@sandrobossman9268 nope. Centripetal force is the force that keeps an object moving in a curved path and is directed inward. Centrifugal force is an apparent force that acts outwardly from the centre of rotation. It is this outward force that moves the pins away from the centre of the puzzle.

Since you have to rotate the frame I am assuming the centrifugal force will push the pins outwards unlocking the pieces

Yes but if the mass of the cylinders both ends is equal then the cylinder won't unlock, it will stay in the middle..but if the one end of the cylinder is heavier (metal) then it'll unlock

To reassemble, you need to rotate one part carefully to avoid the pins come out (cutout facing down and that will be the upper part) and insert it in the frame, and now insert the second part (lower part) in the frame. Shake the all thing and the puzzle is locked again.

The way the 2 part were stuck is because there was a little peace sticking into the hole and you have to shake it to move the peace.
