I went to the davinci exhibit in the denver museum, and there its shown how he also worked on military engineering projects, including interestingly multiple types of mobile bridges, ladders, and so on. He also invented many things that people take for granted, such as ball bearings and other obscure but unfathomably important and widespread engineering devices that are still used to this day.

Fun Fact: Abbas ibn Firnas actually made the flying machine. Firnas was the first man to fly successfully.

Ornithopters actually work, using modern materials and a larger wingspan. Also for takeoff one would need to jump from some height to generate lift, or get running fast enough ( horses pulling a chariot fast ). The parachute however worked as intended
