If hive looks great why are they not expanding into the super? Is it too cold over winter to expand? Should you put super on after winter?

These are Apis Malifera or Apis Cerina bees?

Most of our Aussie bees are hybrids of all the species brought here. They've interbred and adapted to the local conditions, so they're generally mongrels, but tough mongrels!

How long can you keep the hive open for at just 18°c?
@tasmedic Жыл бұрын
His bees are out and about at 18 degrees which I would take to indicate that they're pretty comfy at that temperature. Still, I'd try to be as quick as possible with the inspection, and make sure I have all my kit at hand for the inspection before I start. I'm not sure I'd leave the super on through winter though, especially if it's only a small colony. It's obviously more difficult to keep the extra volume warm on the colder nights.

@@tasmedic Thanks for the reply Tasmedic. We're getting daytime maximums of between 21°c and 26°c here atm and there's plenty of native trees flowering so the girls are out and about too. It was more the impact on the brood I was thinking about. Night temps are mostly between 10°c and 13°c and the super is pretty full so I'm going to leave it on over Winter.
