Your strategy is a flesh cut. Flesh cuts are most successful when they are near epiphytic root shoots and might perform a bit better, but are more prone to rot. Honestly, these plants are very resilient...Any cutting does fine as long as it's in the shade and doesn't get too cold or overwatered. We prefer a stem cut, where you cut the stem and most of the little "nub". It might be slower to grow, but it is more resistant to rot when rooted in water or soil. We prefer to grow cuttings in Fox Farms Happy Frog Potting Soil. It has humic acid and promotes root growth. We are also experimenting with more "unique" methods on our channel. Your plants will do well, thanks for sharing.

Your right, I have been propagating dragon fruit for over 10 years, and live in a very wet climate. Also was taught by a Vietnamese guy, and have always just pruned, and stuck in the soil. Rarely have seen any cuttings that have not taken. So rare in fact, that can't even recall a time it have not worked.

Good for you. 😁 I'm sure some might find your advice useful but isn't your comment a little bit rude? Sounds like you have your OWN channel to tell all the ways "we do it this way... & We do it that way...." so why come here to step on someone else's and THEIR way of doing it on THEIR OWN channel? Maybe I'm wrong.... But....just saying....

Thank you for this video! Trimmed back some random cacti growing signs my palm tree (in FL) a couple of years ago mainly to avoid being stuck while getting my mail... A week ago I noticed some fuzzy things on the ground, realized they were deaf flowers, looked up at the palm tree & realized it was flowers from that random cactus! 😮 I'm new to gardening so didn't think much of that cacti... But after a little research I realized it's a Pitaya Dragonfruit! I feel so excited & blessed to have one of these beauties growing wildly in my own yard! & now I'm going to try to grow some from cuttings!! 🙏🏼🌵💮 😊

I've been buying rooted cuttings but thought I'd try rooting my own cuttings. I tried the method of rooting with the stem cut to a nub. I let dry (scab over) and after 8 weeks... nothing. The cutting is still in great shape but I thought it would have rooted by now. Its been in the shade in very good weather. Originally I was going to use the EG method of cutting off an inch of the bottom but was convinced otherwise. I watched this video to reconfirm what I should do. My 4 unrooted cuttings I have now have been cut and are scabbing over as we speak. Hey Kevin nice job. You're the reason I started growing Dragon Fruit. After I watched your video on how you grew your first Dragon Fruit I thought it was something I would like to try. Now I'm starting a Dragon Fruit alley on the side of my house like Richard of Grafting Dragon Fruit just a little scaled down from his.....maybe... or so my wife hopes. Once you start it's hard to stop. 9 varieties so far and counting. Next stop....edible landscaping.

Awesome! I didn't know it was this easy. My sister-in-law had a gorgeous and very tall dragonfruit plant that she didn't care for anymore and she basically was going to leave it outdoors and let it die. I wanted it so bad, but didn't have the space for it and would have to drive it back to my home which was 6 hours away, so I didn't take it with me. Had I known back then, I would have taken cuttings and tried to grow my own. Good news is she will try to grow it again (she didn't want the other one because it didn't fruit, whereas I just loved the plant whether it fruited or not) and said she'll grow me one as well.

I watched this video about 6-7 months ago. Took a 1 foot cutting from my rotting rusted dragon fruit plant. Waiting 2 days and planted it in a 1 gallon pot. After 2 months it was about 2 feet and has been climbing since. The cutting is now over 6 feet tall in less than a year and in a 1ft x1ft x 3 foot deep pot with a 6ft chemically treated stick and surprisingly still loves to root on it. I just refreshed my memory by rewatching the video and took a new 18inch cutting from the original plant and I am going to repeat the process.

I have a dragonfruit cutting a friend gave me a few months back, but it hasn't grown at all! I chunked it into some dirt in a wide 1 gallon pot but it has remained exactly the same size, although it hasn't withered either. Today, I decided to change its dirt in an attempt to see if I can get it to grow, and when I removed the dirt, I found that it had made plenty of roots, so I find it strange that it hadn't grown. I put in the same pot with only sphagnum moss mix this time and I moved it somewhere where it gets sun all day long. I hope it grows and gets as beautiful as your dragonfruit! Thanks for this informative video~

I found old Dragon Fruit lying flat on the ground in the garden of a property I just moved to in Brazil. Its pretty beaten up with rot every where. I think its best hope is if I take cuttings and try root those. I do t thunk ill find anything viable at the size of cutting you have . What the smallest cutting I could take and still have it viable. I'm not I a rush for it to grow big so I'd rather work as small as I can and try get some good numbers of plants

I've found after doing this it's always better to start them off in the shade for a few months. I use to put them in sun and they would dry up and look bad. Then I placed them in full shade and wow, with in a week or two full green color and a few even produces fruits on a cutting about 9 inches long.

For growing dragon fruit from cutting no need to cut underneath of that cutting. Reason why not to cut because it will be fast to roots and not easy to rot. If I want to buy a cutting of dragon fruit I will purchase the uncut cutting one. It save of my money. By the way nice video tough.

This may sound stupid, but if a dragonfruit is not self-fertile, do you need to cross pollinate it with a different plant all together? Or, can you cross pollinate with plants that originated from cuttings of the same donor plant (i.e. clones)? I'm guessing Q1 - Yes, Q2 - No...
@billyd7628
@billyd7628 Жыл бұрын
it can't create fertile fruit with itself with the same genes as itself which also includes clones. seed grown plants don't have this problem because they are all slightly different even if they share most of the characteristics of the parent. plants from the same fruit can pollinate each other. but for cuttings i would say you need to get two different cultivars. im getting a palora and sugar dragon to pollinate each other so get two different types.

I had a bunch of super leggy sections on a plant whose trellis (papaya) fell over. I took midsection cuttings where they scab on both sides. This should be ok right? Or do you really need to cut where it comes off the branch and leave the end intact? My impression is these things are pretty indestructible if they don’t rot.

Wouldn't it be better to flood the cutting when it's just been planted and top up the planting mix as necessary? That way you're assured of good soil contact right from the get go and if you're using a sandy, gritty compost mix it should drain quickly to avoid rot...
