For me, I think it's better to take a minimalistic approach to studying! I use the normal red, blue, black pens for writing notes (red for titles and important concepts, black for the actual notes, blue for my answers to questions) and a yellow highlighter to emphasise key points. I agree, it is definitely better to stay simple than just using a bunch of different coloured highlighters! (I was influenced to buy them from other note-takers and now I just never use them...) Thanks Shane!

I tend to use a mixture of both techniques! I prefer keeping my notes minimal while also containing information, while also using highlighters to help me correlate certain information. My technique involves a black and blue pen, lead pencil and a rubber, and a maximum of 3 different coloured highlights for formulas, important concepts, names, definitions/terms etc. This way my little artist brain is still engaged with the content while actually studying. Sooooo minimal yet colourful is the way to go for myself :)

The limiting supplies advice is excellent. All the study note videos just seem so artsy and time-consuming. I like to have big titles in colour for my pages (my handwriting is tiny, so if I use my regular writing for titles, I totally miss the headings and the larger font helps it stand out). Still, the amount of time these videos clearly must spend getting their notes so pretty is ridiculous and also would discourage the less artistically inclined and (not to stereotype) males. I've never once seen one of those videos look like a guy did it, which is really weird. It's not like guys don't study or make notes. Pretty notes may motivate you to read over your notes but it does take away some focus and if you write something wrong you feel worse as you ruin your piece.

Shane's being spitting facts. 100% agree with everything you said. Simple = better. Only thing I'd disagree with is the black pen selection/advice . The Uni Jetstream although slightly expensive at 5.00AUD per pen , I feel is better than the Uniball eye micro, as the grips feel so good on the hand. It has served me well since HSC and 3 years of University. Great honest video ! Keep it up.

Honestly, super cutesy note making helps some people enjoy their studying. If there's something to look forward to when it comes to studying, procrastination and avoidance becomes less likely, and the process doesn't feel like hell lol. It's personally too distracting and time consuming for me, and for you too I assume, but for many, it makes the process much better. It has its merits!

this guy is litterally so right... you dont really need expensive stationary for taking notes... also, yes, he is "roasting" that person who takes notes with a million pens and hgs, but also, videos like those actually seem really unreal and a waste of time... think smart kids... really helpful video, thank you :)
@AmIWhatIAm3 жыл бұрын
I agree, but it's all about preferences. The video example he's shown as "notes that are wasting your time" with neat handwriting and with a lot of colours, the actual person gets A* and she self studies. For her, she did not waste her time at all. That means, even so the person is doing a "colouring competition" from your viewpoint, doesn't mean it is to them. If I'm doing this guy's note taking method, it surely won't work for me because I'm a visual learner, I need diagrams and colours. But if it works for you then that's absolutely fine. The person from the original video also did say "you don't have to have these stationaries, I'm just showing how *I* do my notes", they didn't shove it and say " *THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD DO YOUR NOTES* ". It's all about preferences, not everyone is the same.

Pro tip: instead of using a pen start using a good mechanical pencil (ex: rotring 600 0,5mm) with good quality 2B leads (ex: pentel ain stein). Corrections and editing will be much easier and cleaner. This tip was given to me by a lecturer of a productivity and time management course. I’m from Italy and here using pencils for notes after primary school is seen as dumb meanwhile in the US everyone uses these (always look at how they roll in America for practicality). It’s been a game changer for me.

this was so useful!! thank you!! also you are hilarious :) *in my opinion notes are better off being plain, but i am not entirely against the use of several colours. For myself, using several colours kind of motivates me to actually study 😂 and makes them more appealing and interesting to look at. Also you can use the colours as a memory key for example yellow = formulas or blue = key ideas etc. that's my thoughts
@ShaneHuang884 жыл бұрын
thanks! that is definitely true and there are advantages for both ways, in the end its just based on your preference and what works for you :)

This method definitely doesn’t work for me. The only way i will find myself taking these kind of notes is if i already understand the topic that is being discussed and only writing information or facts i didn’t know before. But for a new topic i would implement this strategy but go home and orgnaize my notes as i study them.
