to the peeps who are stressing: don't worry too much about your atar, all you need to do is try your best. In many cases even if you don't get a high enough atar you still sometimes can be accepted into the course you want to do, or you can transfer to the course you didn't get into down the track. PLEASE just know that your atar does not define you. Also no one talks about atars after high school. Good luck! from a 2020 graduate

Scaling was where I messed up in, my teachers never told me the specifics of how each subject is scaled differently. So I picked my subjects, did well in them, expected a decent/good ATAR and got way below what I expected. Hit me pretty hard tbh. Still got offers to uni so there’s that.
@logansmee57154 жыл бұрын
What subjects did you do? I feel like scaling is talked about way too much in the HSC even though it doesn’t really matter. You can still achieve a 99+ ATAR in almost any subject
@dannys61934 жыл бұрын
Logan Smee I don’t think it’s practically possible to get a 99+ if you choose certain subjects
@loopsy24104 жыл бұрын
Damn that's unfortunate but good for you on the uni offers. Out of curiosity, what subjects did you end up choosing?
@zs93014 жыл бұрын
Scaling really isn't something to consider unless you're performing so well that even one mark more would make a difference (ie people aiming for ~99.5+). Scaling is there to balance out all the subjects and make them the 'same' difficulty. If you do an easy subject vs a hard subject it turns out the same because rhe easy subject scales low (but you do well) and the harder subject scales well (but you do badly).
@sopeechang62533 жыл бұрын

There are differences in a students ability to work hard depending on their natural intelligence. @@geraldiner2527 oh awsome! So basically what I did for English Atar is buy the good answers booklet, and literally model your essay paragraphs EXACTLY the same structure. Like, obviously don't copy the essay, but the structure is very important to copy. What I found helpful is going thru the good answer guide essays and highlighting; 1. everytime they link back to the main thesis (should be at the end, last sentence in that paragraph) 2. Everytime they use a quote (usually 2 per paragraph) 3. Everytime they link back to the topic sentence of that paragraph Each paragraph should be a new genre convention (depending on the question you answer) but should always be relevant to the overall question you're trying to answer in your essay
@b.l74914 жыл бұрын
For example, if I was analysing a book, and say the question was : "How does text one represent ideas about indigenous australians" I would then structure my thesis statement first ( look up thesis builder it's helpful), for example -> "Text one uses characterisation, setting and context to subvert traditional ideas about indigenous australians." Then my three paragraphs would be on : 1.characters, 2. context and then 3.setting.

I've just started year 12 and I do advanced maths, biology and chemistry. I like biology but I don't like advanced maths or chemistry nor am I good at them, however I need them for the Uni course I'm trying to get into (BSc). Do you recommend dropping them both and possibly doing the course later than expected or should I keep them and do my best? Thanks, hope u respond
@yeetusmcfeetus10313 жыл бұрын
Im probably not the person you were hoping for but I'm in a similar boat. My degree BSc(Medsci) required me to do a math, bio and chem course but I only do math and bio. This is because chem is not a prerequisite rather assumed knowledge. I think you should double check on your degree (varies with uni) which subjects is assumed knowledge and which is prerequisite. If you really don't like chem/math, my university of choice (usyd) allows you to take bridging courses which spams 1 yr worth of chem into a 1 term workshop so you don't fall behind (varies in uni as well). Tldr: check which is assumed knowledge and which is prerequisite
@conorpalmer27103 жыл бұрын
@@yeetusmcfeetus1031 Yeah I probably will take a bridging course but I don't like advanced maths and I'm not good at it and I know adv. maths is a prerequisite for BSc at usyd but chem isn't so it's really the problem with maths

@@conorpalmer2710 your taking just bsci right? (There's multiple branches of bachelor of science offered at usyd. Eg bsci (medsci). Honestly, math is a topic where hard work shows the most. People say that working through past papers is the best way to succeed. I would probably suggest (and what I'm doing when I receive my resources) is to work through the textbook that my school gave and learning the past papers that way.
